It's perfectly straightforward. You buy Q-tips to put them in your ears. But you might hurt yourself with that little stick. So they can't advertise the product as going in your ears. They have to pretend you're doing anything but that with them. And they warn you on the box, dude, caution, do not stick in ears, wtf, that would be crazy. The whole product is a lie! And is anything else like that - does anything else pretend not to be used for what you actually use it for, for legal reasons? Why yes. Drug paraphernalia. So there you have it.

You've got a great point. Q-tips are like drugs!

Not for legal reasons, but I remember the old commercials for toilet paper. They showed a little kid playing catch and stuffing toilet paper in the mitt so it wouldn't hurt when he caught the ball. Granted, it's hard to accurately market something made for wiping your ass.

I remember seeing Gallagher doing a standup bit years ago where he talked about scented toilet paper. "It's the one thing in the world you don't have to make smell good, because you know it's gonna get f---ed up!"

What were we talking about again?

In the UK, we did it with small puppies.

(Gosh, I ought to be paid as a straight man in a comedy duo, giving such obvious "feed lines" as that one.)

Because we didn't want my eldest son (just a bit older than a toddler now) sticking Q-Tips in his ears and hurting them, my wife has him convinced they're for cleaning your toes... Whenever he sees any, he begs for some and then takes his shoes & socks off so he can clean his toes...

(Just doing my 2 cents to keep the thread derailed...)

Possible bugs found

-Got a script error when played "Throne room" - "Golem" (sub-script out of range was it?)

-Can't seem to save cards to exclude "Treasure map" for some reason.

I am not sure about other countries, but in American Copyright Law Game Concepts and Rules are not protected. Only Art and Names. This means that as long as the art and names are different you can clone a game.

There are interesting ways to exploit these rules. For example, while you can't specifically copy and sell cards that look like and are called "Dominion" cards (let alone make it into a program) you can, legally speaking, make Unofficial Variants of a Game using your own rules and graphics and can still call it by the game name since you would not be competing with it or infringing on any rights. This is why you can buy, say, Variant pieces of Settlers of Catan. (I wish people would make and sell variants of Dominion on eBay too!) But when someone cloned Settlers of Catan in software they ended up calling it Sea3D and made new graphics to comply with copyright laws.

All that being said, it's a very interesting program. Very well done.

I noticed a bug in the AI. If you put 3 embargo tokens on the Province the AI still prefers it over the Duchy even though they become essentially the same victory points at a higher cost. Then, even with 5 Embargo Tokens on the Province - essentially meaning 1 Victory point for 5 cards drawn - it still buys the Province when able.

On the other hand, funny thing is, in the end, the one AI player ended up with only 6 curse cards. And won. Not entirely sure how it pulled that one off.

Not quite. The rules as written are protected by copyright. The game mechanics themselves are not, but the written text of the rules is. The names of cards may not be protected, as they are individually too minimal to warrant copyright protection; but there is a question whether the complete set of card names would in fact be protected.

First thing I noticed about this game:

For 3-4 players, the default number of VP cards is still 8 (like it is for 2 players), this should be 12.

I gotta be honest, Donald sounds like a complete dick. I love Dominion, but his attitude towards this whole situation seems to be rather patronizing. People are trying to emulate his game because they love it, and all he can do is talk down to people. I would bet most of us on this thread have bought the game, and furthermore RGG or Donald will not lose a cent because some nerds made another way to play their game. I completely understand the intellectual property issues going on here, but Donald X. could be a lot more understanding in his treatment of our forum. Every step of the way, the program creator apologized, and what else can Donny X. do but insult the man's efforts. It makes me wonder if I want to continue sending money his way.

I am rude for sure, especially to people who waste my time in a frustrating manner, and to people like you, I mean really dude.

But perhaps you just have a problem of perspective. Suppose for example, that after jatill sent me a geekmail, which was private so obv. I'm not posting it, suppose my private reply was, say:

donaldx wrote:
I don't really mind, but probably can't officially endorse anything. I mean we have our own thing and I have to endorse that. If our version isn't out, you don't use our art, and you don't sell yours, then it seems really unlikely to me that anyone will complain. You're just a fan having fun. I won't complain personally. If our version is out, then it would probably depend on, did your version hit it big or not. If we aren't really losing customers then whatever. I don't expect we will let you use our art, and if you are trying to make money from your version then it's an issue no matter what.

I can't speak for Jay of course.

Then suppose he got bored of waiting for Jay to reply to him, used our art without permission, and claimed that he had informal permission for this project. Suppose that. Now what should my next comment to him look like? And we don't need to guess there, it's right in the thread.

I have re-read my posts here and stand by them! jatill, wtf dude, you knew you didn't have permission and used our art anyway. Now I get to have people say what a monster I am despite you still getting to have the program up without our art, and despite the many other things we have not tried to shut down.

You can't read the whole thread. SOmeone seems to have deleted some early posts, though some are still around in quotes. I wonder who that could have been.

Since this thread appears to still be going, may I revisit the topic of when the officially-sanctioned electronic version of Dominion is planned for release?

Until recently, nothing at all happened on this project, for reasons I am not privy to. I would like to know but do not. As far as I knew things were happening. And obv. I would have liked a program to come out oh a couple years ago.

I do know that now things are actually happening (and, not with any people previously involved, if anyone was). I don't know if they will unravel or continue in the expected timely manner. My best guess it that if you asked me in two weeks I would say probably it will come out in September 2011. I didn't just say "if you asked me in two weeks" for nothing, obv. the more time passes the more confident I will be.

Furthermore my best guess would be that at that time, it would support multiple uh devices, and would have at least the base set and Intrigue but not everything that's published. I don't know how long the rest of the expansions will take but how hard are they really. But you know if you have the main set and Intrigue, why wait on putting it out. My best guess is that it will also have an AI, although why you would use that other than to replace a resigning player I couldn't tell you.

I don't have any more information or any more guesses.

I play Androminion on my phone quite a bit, and the AI is challenging enough to keep me coming back for more. Also being able to play 3-4 player games in less then 2 minutes (with certain sets) is great. Most of the time when I play a game on my phone I don't want to mess with playing against a real person, I'm just looking to get a quick gaming fix in 2-10 minutes.

Good to hear it. :)

AI is fun to practice with. Also, a "campaign" mode is fun with dominion cards.

I was testing out the Hinterlands expansion after downloading it from the above link and I get a run time error "53" window when the game ends, I click 'ok' and the game automatically exits. Any ideas?

I'm playing it in Windows XP.
