Joe Diamond died while bravely fighting a Shoggoth and a Cthonian, dropping his huge (and I mean huge, the man was kleptomaniac and had a nice collection of items from when it was important he ended in the room with someone) pile of items on the floor of the study. Jenny Barnes, armed with absolutely nothing, then entered the study, evaded the monsters and explored, picking up, among other things, the Magnifying Glass and the Knife. And this is where the Keeper (my husband) and I disagreed.
Can Jenny:

a)explore and then immediately use the Magnifying Glass' bonus action to attack with the knife

or

b)explore and then only have her usual movement steps remaining, because she didn't have the Magnifying Glass when she first began exploring?

I think it's a), that she finds the Magnifying Glass and is immediately entitled to its bonus, but the hubby strongly disagrees.

Sorry. I agree with your husband. But that's just my opinion.

I'd go with b. If you have a magnifying glass, you don't have to spend as much time searching. You found the magnifying glass while searching the normal, slow way, so you should not get a bonus.

This is a thematic answer, of course.

Another way to look at it is that if you got the bonus immediately, then you've conceded that the magnifying glass was used to find itself, which can't be the case.

Re: (Yet another) Question about Joe's Magnifying Glass.
Hmm, I was reading it as if you found the Magnifying Glass and then it would help you do something else, but I'm beginning to see your point, it gives the additional action because it makes exploring less of a hardship. Bah, hate it when the hubby's right.

This issue came up in one of our games. We ruled that, since the magnifying glass's effect triggers after the exploration is finished, version a) was correct. Sure, it's not terribly thematic, but neither are things like "A light went out somewhere else in the house that I couldn't see anyhow, but since my room was already dark as well, somehow that scares me".
