2011-10-01 - Game day at Sages. Got in some great games with good friends!
Pandemic
Acquire - Finally got my wife to play this. She didn't hate it.
Sentinels of the Multiverse
Cards Against Humanity
Coloretto
Glory to Rome
Sentinels of the Multiverse
A la carte x 3 Tons of shocked looks on some hardcore gamers faces when 1 - They had no idea how they have never heard of this game. and 2 - How such a corny looking game can be so much fun.
Battleship Galaxies: The Saturn Offensive Game Set - I ordered Battleship Galaxies for my boy and I, and got lucky and had someone willing to teach it to us.

2011-10-02
Battleship Galaxies: The Saturn Offensive Game Set - Went over the rules, and played the starting scenario with my boy.

I played games solely with the wife and son this weekend and we tackled the following:

7 Wonders - first time for all, very fun, even if I lost all three times
Forbidden Island - we lost...just couldn't get those damn lion cards!
Caribbean - a bit simple sure, and it shows my wife and I are on the same page way too often, LOL

EDIT: Forgot to add that we played Small World as well, with the three of us all scoring around 100...easily the highest scoring game we've played.

10/1 I played a game of Sid Meier's Civilization. It took over 4 hours, and I'm not sure I cared for it at all. Oh well. That was all the gaming I could manage this weekend. My three-week-old regularly has other plans for us, including games of "Guess What Invisible Thing Is Wrong Now?" and "Burp: The Dexterity Game."

Well, last Friday night was one of my two monthly gaming nights here in Waterloo and I managed one game of Kill Doctor Lucky and two games of Endeavor. Then with my kids we played Chrononauts I bought Saturday afternoon.

I finished off a game of Combat Commander: Europe via Vassal with

which saw me terribly defeated as the Germans in the deep winter against an unstoppable hoard of Russians (it didn't help that my reinforcement IG18 broke on the first event after it appeared). Then finished the weekend with a game of Stone Age.

A fun weekend.

Saturday my wife and I celebrated my birthday. Got total pick of games to play. Finally got Haggis to the table. Very surprised my wife didn't like it much, since it could essentially be played with a regular deck of cards. It might be an effect of being unfamiliar with the game, or just not liking it.

Also played my new copy of Saint Petersburg, which went over surprisingly well. The game sounds a little dry, just buying cards over and over. But it was a lot of fun buying up cards, and very tough at times to decide what action to take. Can't wait to play it with more.

Ok, I'll play along

Friday is our weekly boardgame night - and instead of playing something fun we decided on giving Factory Fun a try. Twice. Huge mistake - except for the owner, everyone pretty much disliked it.

Go and play Galaxy Trucker if you like puzzle games.

On Saturday my wife and me introduced a new gamer to Stone Age and it went perfectly - a true gateway game that even hardcore gamers can enjoy. After a couple of turns you could really see the gears in her head starting to spin and although as a first-timer she naturally focussed entirely on her own board she didn't do too badly as my wife and me were too busy blocking each other - additional fun was had because for instructional purposes we openly talked about how and why we were doing this or that.

A good gaming weekend. I played a few games for the first time.
Vinhos- A four player game that I played for the first time. There are a lot of decisions to make and the game is not forgiving so every action can be pivital.

A Game of Thrones-Another one I played for the first time. I really liked this one but I am afraid it may be prone to kingmaker. We played just the base game however so I would think the more we add the better it will be. Look forward to playing this one again.

Julius Caesar-No one can win as Caesar. Has anyone who has played this had any luck with him? If so what is the secret because we have tried many different tactics and all have failed.

Biblios-A quick filler that I polayed for the first time. Quick and easy to teach I would play again as I was waiting for the main event to start.

Shogun-My favorite of the weekend. This is the second time I played this one and I really like it. The combat resolution mechanism is very cool and can be cruel.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

First game of Quarriors!. It was OK. I'll play it again, but I'm afraid I got caught up in the hype. Dominion with randomness. I'm not a huge Dominion fan. And I'm not keen on random... Doh!

Also first game of Elder Sign. Again, I was a bit meh. My wife really liked it. I love Arkham, but this just didn't seem to do it for me. Whilst the things you do are called tasks, that exactly what the game feels like. A series of tasks. No narrative. And not much gaming. Just a series of random tasks. As before, I'll play it again to see if it's a grower...

2 player action happened

Qwirkle taught this one to another avid gamer, he was ready to buy it after one game

Battle Line Lost, boo!

Magic: The Gathering Not a big MTG fan but it's okay once and awhile, I like my Euros, no offense to any Magic fans

Summoner Wars Fun little 2 player game that is a bit more appealing to me than MTG

Had a great time this weekend. Most games were new to the group except for Catan and TTR. I was explainer of things for the weekend.

10/1/2011

Vineta - 6 players - all new players except for me. Everyone enjoyed it.

Catan - 6 players with Catan: Seafarers and Catan: Cities & Knights expansions. Crazy game. Called it quits with a three way tie at 2am!

10/2/2011

Tikal - 4 player, 3 new players and me. Fun time. All picked up on it quickly.

Dominion - Slow game as the new players tried to figure out which cards did what. Once they picked up on it they all liked it, even my wife who was not so keen on it at the beginning.

Ticket to Ride: Europe - Fast game. 5 players in 45 minutes.

Despite getting a big CoolStuffInc box on Friday with Agricola, Betrayal at House on the Hill, and The Resistance, all I could manage to play was one game of Battleship Galaxies: The Saturn Offensive Game Set.

The Wretch lost again. Despite superior firepower and shielding, they can never break down the ISN's layered combos.

Twilight Imperium 3rd: Played for four hours and then stopped because some of the (new) players weren't made for this brilliant game and started ruining the game for everyone else because of their increasing bad mood.

Lessons learned: this game needs an devoted gaming group.

My buddy Rick (and his son Jeremy) and I played two games of Commands & Colors: Ancients on Saturday. This was an introduction of this game to these two, thought they've played the similar Memoir '44 and Battlecry. We had a great time, and they liked C&C:A better than M44 and BC (especially with the battle back rule).
