Request to Kent (and anyone else).

Can a short post be made to when the list updates? Or will a notification go out when an item is edited?

I am subscribing to this so I know when items change.

Cheers!

I've been using subscriptions to keep up with the changes. I wouldn't know how to set up notifications other than using subscriptions. I could post here when changes are made to the list but at this point, changes are made daily so it doesn't really seem practical. Perhaps when the list becomes less active and changes/updates are less frequent, I'll start making a post in this thread as a notification. Probably the easiest way though is if everyone just subscribes to to the geeklist.
At the beginning of this thread, I regularly update the list of games I take with me to the thrift store. It's not always 100% up to date but I do note the time and day of the last update.

Sounds good - I didn't realize they were being made that often.

When will you be updating the list of games? I posted Downfall of Pompeii last week. Hope you can find it! Thanks again!

You may be able to talk to whoever set up the dynamic list for http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/62260/2011-spare-parts...
It may help you keep track of additions easier.

That's me. Yes, definitely talk to me and tell me what you need. I'm on this list, too, so I'd be happy to help out if I can.

Edit: I had a few minutes, so I went ahead and did a first draft of a version for this list. Games are sorted first in alphabetical order, then in order by the geeklist entry ID (which I believe is assigned sequentially, so older entries will appear in the list first.)

By default, fulfilled entries - which is to say, any entry that contains the word "fulfilled" anywhere in it, bolded or not - is dropped from the list. There's a link at the top to add those or remove them, as appropriate. If you include them, I include a bonus: a count of the number of fulfilled requests so far. As of this writing, that count is a whopping 126!

There is a tiny bug of note: two games with the same name will sort in strict geeklist ID order, even if they're different games. Dune and Dune are an example of this. If that's a problem let me know and I'll try to fix it, but it doesn't seem like it should be.

That looks great Ron. If you don't mind, I'll add the link and your explanation to the header of the geeklist. Sorry for the lack of updates to the list in this thread. I will get it updated tonight. The list I carry with me to the stores is up to date though.

By all means! If there's anything else you'd like added or changed, just let me know. For example, I was tempted to add a rogue's gallery of people who'd posted more than one item, but I restrained myself. devil

If they are more than one unfullfilled item at a time you totally should do that!! devil

Thanks for making this geeklist Frankenfletch and thanks parkrrrr for the list. Now I can keep an eye out as well while I am thrifting.

I would've been seemingly guilty - I didn't use the word "fulfilled" when I edited my first entry blush I fixed it.

Oh, I wrote it. I'm just not gonna publish it. Other than our gracious host, there are only two people who have duplicate posts that aren't just a failure to mark something fulfilled, or to mark it in a machine-readable way. One of those has been asked to fix the problem already, and the other just posted two variants of essentially the same game. So I think it's under control without our help. (Frankenfletch, if you want that link, send me a GM.)

I think most always it's unintentional. I try to catch it when it happens and either comment on the item or gm the user but sometimes I miss it. parkrrrr's link will make catching these cases easier so I can make the user's aware that they have more than one active item.

I wouldn't feel bad about that. You're definitely not the only one, and you fixed it when you found it.

In the process of checking the rogues' gallery, I did discover that I had to add "FUFILLED" to the range of acceptable misspellings I'd already considered.

I wonder if there is an _easy_ way to keep a running total of which people have fulfilled the most requests. As in those who have sent out games either from their own neglected collection or thrift finds. Maybe their avatar and a number beside it, arranged from most to least.

The easiest way is probably to get each of the 120-some people who have had their requests fulfilled to add one of these to their posts to say who fulfilled it:

If we had those, or some other standard way to say how it was fulfilled, it'd be pretty straightforward to parse out the fulfilled requests and figure out who fulfilled them. Absent that, I'm afraid we're stuck waiting for Skynet.

(Edit: fixed ambiguity)

I still feel guilty for doing this. Even fulfilling several requests hasn't dulled the shame.

Another problem I ran into is that some people used the word "fulfilled" in their post but didn't actually mean to mark the item as fulfilled. Which means that their request does not show up on your list. I think I will just gm the users and ask them to remove the word until the item is actually refilled. In the mean time, here is the list of all such cases I found. If anyone sees your item on this list. Please edit out the word fulfilled so it will show on parkrrrr's list. Unless of course, it really has been fulfilled.

Age of Renaissance item # 22
Bohnanza item # 79
Civilization item # 128
Dark Tower item # 150
Daytona 500 item # 154
Dragon Strike item # 176
Funny Friends item # 231
Outpost item # 391
Puerto Rico item # 414
Shadowlord! item # 471
Space Crusdade item # 483
Star Wars: Star Warriors item # 494

I've used your list to audit my running spreadsheat and it was extreamly helpful in finding mistakes and ommissions that I had made. Thanks again for creating it!

I find this graphic a bit overwhelming. It is about 4x too big and I don't really think it serves a purpose since, for the most part, everyone already adds the word FULFILLED in bold to the item headers anyways.

It's a nice idea, but only if it is used in the item header and is made much smaller.

Re: This Year, I'm thrifting for You! Discussion thread
Not sure if anyone is subscribed to this thread any more but 2011 is now over and it's time to decide what to do with the list. I'm hoping to receive some imput from the community on that but first I'd like to thank everyone who participated. My original intent for this geeklist was just a way to revitalize my personal interest in thrifting and make a few gamers happy in the process. I had no idea the geeklist would become as big as it did and that so many other thrifters would join in the effort.

Also a special thanks to:

For creating the online "live" list of games requested. I believe that list made life easier not only for me but for everyone involved.

I really enjoyed running this list. I loved seeing a game at the thrift store and being thrilled because I know someone asked for it.

At the same time, I feel bad because I know I didn't do the best job I could of managing it. Life got a bit hectic for me the second half of the year and it became difficult for me to keep up with the subscriptions to all the changes that were being made. Even more frustrating is the two times in the last two months that I accidently clicked "mark read" and lost large amounts of subscriptions for the geeklist. This has resulted in the header being in desperate need of updating. I have since discovered that by donating a little extra to the site allows me to see old subscription notices. Hopefully I'll be able to go back through notices and get caught back up. Anyways, I'd like to apologize for not doing a better job at managing the list.

I plan to keep the list open until the end of January at the very least. This will give a little extra time for items to be fulfilled and give me a little time to get caught up with the header and the pile of games I still need to send people.

Honestly, I have every intention of thrifting games for others once again in 2012. It was too much fun to stop now. That being said, I'd rather not manage a similar geeklist this year but I'm willing to it.

My hope is that someone would like to to take it on for 2012. I'm sure there are plenty of geeks out there that could do a much better job than I did. Please let me know if any of you are interested in volunteering to manage a "Thrifting for You Geeklist" for 2012. I'd like for the spirit of the list to remain the same but I wont be offended if you change the rules or how it is done.

If no one volunteers then I will start a new list for 2012. Either way, I think we should start a new list. That gives everyone a shot at requesting a game that they were not able to request last year. But I'm open to any dissenting opinions.

In fact, I welcome any and all input on how to handle the transition to 2012.

One quick suggestion I have is that we should decide early how to allow the list owner, whoever that is, to fix items that the index script sees as fulfilled when they are not, or that are not tagged as fulfilled when they are. I'd briefly discussed this with Kent back in November or so, but since the end of the year was fast approaching with no real outcry, I didn't do anything on it. This could be as simple as having the script look for item comments from the list owner containing specific keywords.

Whatever else is decided, whoever the new list owner is should feel free to contact me with any suggestions or changes to the index script, as well as to let me know the new geeklist ID so I can make an index script for it. (At least one other BGGer has seen the ugliness of the code behind my index scripts and can testify that each one is a finely handcrafted bit of gobbledygook, needing at least a little modification for each incarnation.)
