I havent got time for World in Flames and my wife thinks The Battle for Normandy is too expensive. Any recommendations for what I should look at?

No Retreat! The Russian Front
Battle for Moscow (second edition)
Paul Koenig's Market Garden: Arnhem Bridge

Most of the VPG games are small footprint with low counter density and a good choice for small wargame!

Lock-N-Load: Heroes of the Blitzkrieg...

+ WW2
+ Scenarios playable in one evening
+\- Multiple players [several scenarios could be played simultaneously]
++ Dunkirk is soon to be released.

This is nicely priced to with above average components.
Hope this is helpful.

I was going to recommend Memoir '44 in Overlord mode, but I see you already have a copy of Memoir and rate it a 9. Do you have a 2nd set so you can play multi-player?

There are a number of 'small / short' game options, for instance old SPI quads (perhaps being 'redone' now) - e.g. Westwall: Four Battles to Germany. However, other than the previously mentioned Battle for Germany, I'm not aware of any with explicit 'multi-player' rules. Of course, you can always do an 'ad hoc' version of multi-player, by dividing up forces on one side. For instance, a 'Bastogne' where one player takes the forces surrounded in Bastogne, and another takes the relief force. There might also be some shorter scenarios in strategic level ETO games - e.g. the 1939 scenario of Rise and Decline of the Third Reich.

If you don't mind print-n-play, Valor & Victory is good - except that is two players (although technically speaking, there would be no reason someone couldn't design multi-player scenarios). My 16 year old son and I have played many of the scenarios - all in under 2 hours.

So other than multi-player, it fits your other requirements quite nicely.

Liberty Roads. Cobra scenario playable in one evening, but I recommend the whole campaign game.

Since you didn't mention scale, it's hard to make a recommendation ...

Squad Leader

Yeah, the original, no expansions, not ASL. That way, it's not a lifestyle and it won't bankrupt you.

Similarily, I'd also recommend Panzer Leader. I've bought and sold many newer ones on the subject but, as a game, this is the one I keep coming back to.

Yeah - I really like Memoir, and have done the multi-player a few times.

What I'm looking for here is a game for the - ehm - more hardcore wargamers I know. Those who love WiF, but now have job, kids and family. Memoir is a bit to miniature for some of them!

I agree with Brett Battles for the Ardennes is a great game.

I also enjoyed Against the Reich

although might not be best for multi-player

I'll second that recommendation. Pick up Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Steel! – Kursk 1943 now, then get Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! – Russia 1941-42 (2nd Edition) this summer when its released.

You seem to go for WWII

Logically, you should look at Conflict of Heroes or Combat Commander for squad level fighting.

For other scales, I would look at anything made by Victory Point Games that floats your boat. They have Solitaire games about holding Malta and a second about the Eastern Front, operational games (Barbarossa, Market Garden, the Bulge, and Normandy, and the No Retreat! series for Grand Campaigns (Eastern Front and North Africa.)

Most of their games are quite short, usually under 2 hours. No Retreat is more like 6 hours.

Can't go wrong here with experienced wargamers. The game is not difficult for inexperienced wargamers, but the set up can be off-putting. Still a great game.
