The 2 best board game related I've come across are the 2 biggies: Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride. Non board game related? Galaxy on Fire, and Trainyard (or Trainyard express)

My favorites on the Ipad are:

Ticket to Ride
Ascension
Small World
Neroshima Hex
Words With Friends

You cant go wrong with any of those games and I would say they are MUST BUYS for your Ipad.

Caylus if you want a long game... It takes me an hour to play a game of 3 players

Through the desert for a quick game.. No one ever on line though

Ticket to ride is a must if u want an on line experience.. Usually find a match in a few minutes

Non board game pick: kingdom rush. Tower defense only $1 great value.

Ticket to Ride is pretty great on iPad. My wife is addicted to Tichu. Other good options are T&E, Ascension, Disc Drivin (pitchcar), and carcassone.

Non board game favorites include galaxy on fire 2, trainyard, anomaly war zone earth, civilization revolution, rimelands, greed corp, starbase Orion, mirrors edge, and hero academy.

I developed this iPad board game that you might be interested in:

New World Colony

And there's a lite version too if you just want to try it out:

Carc is widely considered to have the best port. Ticket is excellent as well. And Tichu's port is fantastic.

Do you like asyncronous game? I personally prefer async game that I can play anytime with friends around the world, so I would recommend:

- Carcassonne, and Tigris: both are universal (iPad, iPhone, iPod), and play great asyncronously. Carcassonne's price tag shys away many people, especially with the expansions, but I think they just miss out . Carcassonne, I think, is the best board game app ever made.
- Ticket to Ride: also well-done. The only problem for me is it has two versions for iPad and iPhone separately, and worse, one version cannot play online with the other one. Otherwise, it's an excellent implementation. You should expect to pay $7 for the basic game, and $7-$8 for all expansions.
- Caylus: Not the best choice for async, but local or pass-n-play game is great.
- Puerto Rico: No async yet, and no iPhone version, but it's another good implementation.

I have many board game apps, but those are games that get the most play out of my iPad 1.
Non-board games I like to play are: New World Colony and Uniwar (async possible), Cut the Rope, Marple... I refuse to play Angry Birds and any Tower Defense games .

Re: Just got an iPad, what are some must have games ?
Since I don't know your particular playing style/preferences, I'm just going to list off some great games that I have on my iPad and enjoy... then I'm going to share some resources for more games.

Neuroshima Hex - The implementation of this is great, it makes a fiddly board game into a fast playing iPad game.

Small World - If you like Small world, the implementation is excellent (although limited to 2 players) and plays very quickly.

Carcassonne - Absolutely beautiful iPad version; excellent online play.

Ticket to Ride - Also has a fantastic implementation, Days of Wonder really knows how to do an iOS app.

Ascension - My wife and I have been playing the crap out of this lately, hands down the best deck builder in the App Store.

As far as places to find more games... here are some spots to keep an eye on:

iPadBoardGames.org - http://ipadboardgames.org/

BGG's iOS Blog: http://boardgamegeek.com/blog/164/ios-board-games

I'd also keep an eye on this forum and on the Hot Deals forum to catch games when they are marked down. Many $4.99+ games are frequently marked as temporarily free or radically reduced to drum up interest.

My top 3 are:
Samurai
TtR
Battleline

I also like Tigris & Euphrates, but I can't get into Neuroshima Hex. I'd never played the board game, and for some reason I can't get sucked into the app.

I've recently started playing Hive as well, which is pretty good (although it's an iPhone app that isn't quite as good on iPad).

Small World is probably next on my "to buy" list, although I'm also strongly considering Ascension.

I dont think most boardgames are best suited to an ipad.

2 Player games like Battleline work ... particularly online options which allow you to compete with others over the web

If you want some good apps for Ipad try other games such as:

WELDER (great word game)
Peggle (arcade type game)
7th Guest (good port of an old mystery-puzzle computer game)

All great games that would only really work with a computer interface.

Have fun.
