Dice Tower Gaming Award Nominees announced for 2011 Games
Press Release, April 16, 2012

The Dice Tower Network is proud to present the slate of Dice Tower Gaming Awards for games released in the year 2011. A committee made up of over 40 prominent podcasters and bloggers has come up with the lists of the best games of the year 2011.

A couple of notes on this year. First of all, there were so many fantastic games released in 2011, that we decided to increase the nomination slate for Game of the Year to 10 games rather than five. We've also added two new categories - an digital category - for board games translated to iOS devices or computers, and a thematic category - in which we recognize games that have unique, refreshing themes; or games that portray their theme well.

The committee congratulates all the nominees, and we look forward to announcing the winners the first week of July.

Great list of nominees, and congratulations to all the designers and production crew!

I must admit, however, to a little surprise that more than 20 minutes have passed without somebody jumping in to complain that A Few Acres of Snow (which I personally love) is (1) broken, and (2) not a wargame. whistle

Disappointed that Claustrophobia: De Profundis didn't get a nod for best expansion.

Is Small World Underground really an expansion? I was under the impression that it was a standalone game, and though it could be combined with the base set, you'd need another expansion (Tunnels) to really make it work as several of the races are not compatible with each other.

You need tunnels to combine both games into one. You can always just add in the races and special powers and use the base board. So in that sense it is an expansion without needing anything else.

It just seems like there are probably other expansions that might have been more appropriate for the nomination. Having not played SWU, though, my opinion ultimately means nothing. Just curious.

Great list of nominees, I look forward to seeing the winners. One note, Julius Caesar as much as I'd like to see it win, I'm pretty sure it was released in 2010. Not sure if that really matters or not.

Tom, this is definitely one of the better 2011 best-of lists I've read, so good job putting it together.

The only question I have is what the "production value" of a game is based on? Super Dungeon Explore and Mansions of Madness have best-in-industry miniatures, so maybe that alone is enough to earn a nomination. I hope they don't win though, because they've both got big flaws when it comes to other aspects of their production (QA, rules clarity, graphic design, etc.). Is all of the above taken into account or is it really just a "bets bits" category?

You mean the game that won three golden geek awards and an International Gamers Award? Really?

Believe it or not there are a lot of people who absolutely love the game still, despite the existence of an unbeatable strategy. But please let's not turn this into another 20 page rant about the integrity of board gaming, please.

Oh, but that would be so much fun....devil

P.S. I am a huge Wallace fan, just not into this game.

Hey guys, I have a quick question about the Best Small Publisher category.

Is this an award for the best GAME to come out of a small publisher, or is it an award for the best SMALL PUBLISHER in light of their recent work putting out notable games this year?

How many of these games did you actually pay for? Shouldn't you have a disclaimer about the games you received/reviewed that were not actually purchased.

Maybe like a star or something so that we would at least know which games were nominated that were given out for free.

Since it was a group of 40 people who came up with the list, I don't see the point in asking Tom to tell us which games on the list were comped to him as review copies.

This is ridiculous. Academy voters don't pay for the movies they watch to
Vote for the Oscars. Roger Ebert doesn't pay for the movies he watches in the theater.

This isn't really necessary, as this isn't just Tom's opinion. This list is the product of close to 50 different gamers voting on a longer list from each category. These are the short lists that Tom and 40 some-odd other gamers are going to be using to vote on the best of each category.

So, whether Tom got it for free or not is vastly irrelevant, to say the least.

Blackbones, you are a bad person and your jealousy is showing.

So where is the poll again? I voted earlier but can't find it again to see who is winning.

I'm sad because No Retreat! The Russian Front isn't on the best wargames list and that A Few Acres of Snow is going to soak up all the votes of the people that don't know any better about wargames.
