Brettspielwelt (BSW) and .prop file
Edit: Subscribe to this thread if you want notification whenever I post an updated list of game rooms!

Just thought there should be a place for BSW related questions/comments. I have a Geeklist with a lot of BSW information and links: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/4239

Also, this is a convenient place listing game rooms in EnglishTown, to add to people's .prop files (last part). I've included the entire .prop file (just copy/paste the stuff below, replacing the contents of your current .prop file, in your Brettspielwelt folder):

# UPDATED FEBRUARY 1, 2010
# INSTRUCTIONS
#
# Do 2 find/replaces:
# 1. replace all "snoozefest" with your BSW name.
# 2. replace "YOUR_PASSWORD" with your BSW password.
#
# You may need to adjust the size of the window. The
# dimensions listed below will fit on most screens.
# Run the client, then adjust the main window size
# as you prefer. Then, type "/getsize" and replace
# the numbers below with the appropriate numbers.
#
# NOTE: some commands may not work for you until
# you play enough to advance your BSW level.
#
# Please PM me (snoozefest) with any additions,
# corrections or suggestions. Thanks and enjoy!

# These dimensions work well on my 12" Mac with
# current settings (all chat windows in one screen):
WinHeight = 716
WinWidth = 834
WinPosX = 2
WinPosY = 22

# These dimensions work well on my 12" Mac laptop
# if chat windows are SEPARATE:
#WinHeight = 695
#WinWidth = 695
#WinPosX = 2
#WinPosY = 22

# Settings for my 17" screen, multiple chat windows.
#WinHeight = 989
#WinWidth = 915
#WinPosX = 354

Re: Brettspielwelt AKA BSW
I would love to see "A Beginner's Guide to BSW". Because, right off the top, it's freakin' intimidating for a non-German speaker. It also doesn't help to come up against Tichu players who, quite literally, don't let you sit down with them if you've got fewer than 1000 hands on record. But I suppose that can't be changed. :gulp:

I know there are FAQs out there, but even those I find are a little ... scary in their scope. Just a quick few paragraphs to allay the fears and whet the appetite... just your basic "Replace your PROP file with this. These are the commands you should care about right now. And here are some English-speaking towns, and how you get to them."

Of course, it would also help greatly if the client-install app would have an option for the installer to default to an english-language PROP file. It seems to me like a no-brainer design decision, unless they *want* to discourage non-English speakers.

check out my bsw lists - there's some basic info there, and links to other useful sites. There are a bunch of BGGers (and BSWers) more than happy to help you out. Just send me a /tell (type "/tell snoozefest blah blah blah" in the bottom of the main window) next time we're both in BSW.

Oh, I've figured out just about everything by now, but I didn't like how daunting that task was in the first place, and I wish there was a more immediate way of making sure new users trasition into BSW smoothly. Some people think of the interface hurdle as an 'idiot filter' but I worry some babies are being thrown out with the bathwater when the 'learning cirve' of being able to feel comfortable in the BSW world is so steep.

Re: Brettspielwelt AKA BSW
I've just started fumbling my way around BSW, mainly to play Diamant at the moment. But I'll be trying some of the other games soon.

Would there be a way to create a BGG section? We have English Town, BBG Town would be good and let most people meet to play under their BGG usernames. Being a complete noob to BSW I have no idea if something like this would be possible.

Re: Brettspielwelt AKA BSW
Maybe this is a good place to ask this question...why can't I get a more than 2 person game of Carcassonne on BSW? It's not a lot of fun for me as a two-person game, but it seems like whenever somebody is looking for players, they will start it up as soon as two people have joined. I've tried starting my own games, but usually can't attract a 3rd person.

There is a way, but it's too much trouble, I think: someone would have to play a long time, accumulating a bunch of points. Then, they could go off to start their own town. They'd have to be interested in and involved with the metagame - I think most people here mostly just want to play.

An easier solution would be to create a BGG chat channel. Anyone can create a channel. You just need a critical mass of BGGers who want to use that channel and are on BSW enough to make having it around worthwhile.

The easiest way is to just "meet" somewhere. I'd guess most users are English- or American-speakers; EnglishTown would make sense - I think it's the biggest English-language town in BSW, which was why I joined it early on.

I'd guess that it was because it's less random a game with only 2 players? I don't play it much, but it's likely that the people who play the game play it a LOT. General consensus (even here) seems to be that the game is most strategic with 2. Good luck finding more players!

Strange, but I've had the opposite experience. :) Most of the games I've played have been 3 player. Probably just dumb luck.

There do seem to be a lot of players that only want to play 2 player though. Of course they might just want to get to the playing and not wait around for someone to wander along too.

It's possible. But sadly, my experience is that it's a case of people so fixated on their own 'winning percentage' numbers that they only play *anything* 2 player. And because a lot of games play so much faster 2P, allowing them to rack up taler quickly. It seems for a lot of people on BSW, playing games has really taken a back seat to their 'prestige' and their metagame.

Re: Brettspielwelt AKA BSW
Thanks for people's insight.

I've managed to get a few 3 person games going by introducing my wife and my best friend to BSW. And sometimes somebody will wander by while we're setting up a 2-person game, and we'll get in a 3 or 4 person game that way.

I end up playing San Juan almost exclusively as a 2-er game. But for me, at least, it's 'cause it is so fast - I haven't had the time recently to play anything longer and sometimes I just need a quick BSW break. As for the points thing, I think there has been a change such that games with fewer players reward fewer points, so it may not help accumulate talers faster playing only 2er.

Re: Brettspielwelt AKA BSW
Wow - I feel like a foreigner. When I went onto BSW, I took it upon myself to navigate a site that was designed for Germans. My mom's an immigrant who taught me that it's my responsibility to learn and acclimate to other cultures. If you log on from the website after clicking the Union Jack (England's Flag) to turn things to English, it will default the language to english. Whether you use the client or not, there is an option:
/language en
which will switch the default language to english. However, it will leave the menus and game text in German.

BSW feels to me a blend of command line programming and GUI interface. Each game takes a while to learn the interface. But once you know it, it becomes second nature. But it does take a little while and lots of fumbling. The client is an amazing program that makes everything super easy... which is nice, but yes, it does require a few edits. It was designed for German use.

Things that will help:
1.) Once logged on, click on the Channel buttons and join the two English chat channels. Between the two, you'll be able to get the help you need.
2.) Read the help files on the game you want to play. This way, you'll have a good head start on players.
3.) Ask to join a game on the English Chat Channels so you'll play with English speaking players.
4.) Look for arkibet. Type: /whereis arkibet If I am on, I'll be more than willing to help anyone.

With the java applet, be sure to edit your .prop file so that language is 'en' instead of 'de'. This will give you the english menus and interface.

There actually is a BoardGameGeek channel, but usually no one actually in it whenever I enter. However, every once in a while someone's there to talk to and play a game against. Perhaps it would be better if more BGGers knew about it and were as addicted to BSW as me ;)

Re: Brettspielwelt AKA BSW
Still a relative newbie around here, as well as BSW. I have ventured a little into BSW but have not had a good amount of time to poke around enough.

I didn't know that about the "winning percentage" number. Wouldn't it be better if they counted a win against all opponents in a multiplayer game as a win against each? Or do they do that already?

Better? Maybe. But for most people here, I'm pretty sure it makes no difference at all - you're there for the GAMES, not the METAgame. Anyway, I think they do it this way: keep track of the games you've played, and how many of those you've won. Your winning percentage is simply WINS / #PLAYED, regardless of the number of players in each game. But they also track the details, so you can pull up a list of all opponents, and how you've done against them. I think.

I'm having some trouble.

I d/l'ed the BSW client and updated my .prop file (Thank you, by the way), but I'm still having difficulty.

I want to setup and host a game of Dominion, which I have a couple times by accident, but something keeps eluding me.

I've read through about seven help guides, and none of them have this info, so please don't think me impertinent when I say this.

In simple terms, how does one:
A) Open their own room?
B) Setup their Dominion cards?
C) Get back to the main game screen, so I can gameyell?

Any help would be mightily appreciated.

A. Go to a Dominion room, control-j to join the game. Then find opponents (either use the game manager, or have your friends /ghook YOURNAME. Once you have opponents, control-s starts the game. (NOTE: assuming you're using my .prop file)

B. After joining a game but before starting it, hit the GAME button to bring up parameters for that game. In this case, you can look through all the options (previously defined sets of cards, random, player's choice) and choose the one you want.

C. Not sure what you mean -- what screen are you looking at? Simplest to use the gamemanager to gameyell.

A. I can only join rooms that already have players. I want to join an empty room, then go and setup the 10 cards we're going to play with before anyone shows up.

B. Occasionally, I'll open a random room that doesn't have anyone, and I try starting, but "Only teammates may start a game". I try hosting, but that doesn't work. I try join, but then the game begins. At least that's what it seems like.

C. On a couple occasions I've gotten to a setup screen where I can select the 10 cards we play with. On the right of the screen, there's a save button. I click the save button and it resets the cards. I'm curious as to how I get from that screen back to the main screen and save the setup I've just built. Also, typing /manager does not work, at least for me.
