It would be a horrible thing. Don't get me wrong. I think very highly of GMT....

Part of the reason the wargaming hobby has been so strong the last 10 years is because we've had multiple companies. These companies push each other to make better games, better graphics and better components. I don't think GMT would be the company it is today if it didn't have to compete with MMP.

Exactly what I was thinking!

No wonder I never saw it.

Please keep politics out of this!

Yes, because unless this moves to RSP you run the risk of being moderated (as I just was) for commenting on the political context of this story.

That said, as I recall, when Schilling started MMP he mentioned something about promising his wife that MMP would be self-supporting and he would not be bankrolling its operations. (I assume that didn't include the original investment). This may help shield MMP from the sister's company's troubles.

I don;t know if he made a similar promise about the video venture.

AS Brian Youse has mentioned every time it's come up in MMP's folder on Consimworld over the past couple days "MMP is unaffected...by the status of 38 Studios and Big Huge Games."

Somehow, I don't believe this is how the "free" market is supposed to work. Seems the state of Rhode Island loaned the company some $49 million, and now the company has gone bust.

Will Rhode Island get its money back? Or is this another case of a government bail out of a failed business at tax payer expense? Chances are that Rhode Island will only get pennies to the dollar from a bankruptcy court, and Schilling and the other investors will walk away with their millions.

I don't live in Rhode Island, but if I did, I'd be ready with the torch and pitchfork.
If MD and/or RI are anything like MO, then he will soon have a lucrative Government contract...

Curt actually has little to no active participation in MMP operations, as far as I've gathered by reading various sources. Also, when one considers the vast income that Curt made over his MLB career, and contrast that with the rate and volume of wargame production coming from MMP over the years, it's pretty clear that Curt never invested much actual money into MMP. Finally, as noted by a few, the situation with the video game company and Curt doesn't mean he's personally broke, but rather, he has no intention of investing any more of his own fortune into the venture. I am assuming that Curt is still quite comfortably wealthy - he is a pretty intelligent guy - I'm pretty sure he has his finances in order.

Bottom line - I don't see this impacting MMP whatsoever, if for no other reason than that Curt never contributed that much to its operation to begin with.

Of course they're a separate company. Question is, can they continue to run without outside funding? I assume so, since MMP takes money up-front before printing.

For years it's seemed obvious (to this outsider) that they are
running along fine without Curt's financial assistance.

As a minor clarification, though, they take the money only when they
are shipping the game - so clearly they can afford to print before
the money comes in.

Makes the pain of the credit card ding a lot more bearable knowing
the goodies are on their way.

WELL, I HEARD that he was tired of putting $$$ into ASL to keep it alive, while at the same time being regularly accosted by wargamers telling him that he was an asshole.

Not all of us. I thanked him when I met him. He seemed very happy to talk about it. Mind you this was 4 years ago so maybe things changed.

It seems the key comment in this thread has not quite come through: MMP is a separate business entity. Its status is not affected. (And this has nothing to do with "hope"; it was stated explicitly on CSW.)

While Curt's politics and conservative prosletizing (sp) drive me nuts, I think the accusations of him being a greed-ball are out of line.

Over the years, he and his wife have raised a substantial amount of money for the ALS foundation. Truly a horrible disease. When a good friend of mine's wife dies of Lou Gehrig's Disease several years ago, I emailed Shilling to thank him for his involvement in finding a cure and his financial support for the related research. He took the time to send me a nice reply regarding her struggle. He doesn't know me from Adam so he's A-OK in my book.

I feel badly for him and wish him well in the future.

I don't care how much or how little money you have, it's tough when you try a venture; work hard to make a go of it, and end up with your stack being somewhat shorter than it would be if you had just layed back and let your aspirations drift away.

Best to him.

Yea, here is the guy who supports ALS and saved ASL & MMP, so I think we should cut him some slack. I will say that I have absolutely zero interest in video games and frankly I'm a little concerned with all the effort GMT is putting into this area of late, reminds me of the final years at Avalon Hill. The people who are now out of a job at Schilling's game venture did have those jobs while it lasted and I'm sure gained valuable experience in the field so that many of them will find jobs in the same or related areas.

I'm 99.8% certain this is nonsense; perhaps Brian Youse is willing to wade into this sewer to respond.

Meanwhile the debacle continues. Apparently the no-notice mass layoffs announced this week were in violation of federal and state law.

Apparently he's broke from this venture, so unless MMP is running in the black or has another source of funding, they could be at risk.

Curt is not a "source of funding" for MMP, MMP is funded like any other game company, by publishing and selling games.

MeGusta wrote:
Reading back through 38 Studios' plan of expecting a new studio's first game to sell 3 million copies, this was inevitable. I hope Curt runs MMP with more governance!

38 Studio's game sold over 1.2 million copies, exceeding EA's expectations.

I suspect your 3-million copy comment comes from the statements made by the Rhode Island Governor who is, I believe, looking for reelection.

Re: Curt Schilling's video game venture explodes... what does this mean for MMP?
MMP has been "running without outside funding" since 1999. We are funded by selling games. We have tough stretches like any other business, and good runs (like right now, for example).
