Hive: Cthulhu vs Hastur

My son and I enjoy playing Hive and wanted to make our own custom set. We decided to use Lovecraft mythos for our theme. We looked online for some good Cthulhu art, and there is a lot of it out there. Michael Bukowski's excellent work was our favorite. (yog-blogsoth.blogspot.com)

We decided to have two different armies with Hastur and Cthulhu being the "queens" of their sides. In our first try we used the following units:

Hastur, Cthulhu : Bee
Nyarlathotep, Shoggoth : Mosquito
Shub Niggurath, Dagon : Ladybug
Byakhee, Flying Polup : Ant
Mi-Go, Hound of Tindalos : Grasshopper
Elder Thing, Deep One : Spider
Gug, Yog Sothoth : Beetle

We printed them out and mounted them on cardboard and tried it out. We quickly found that the tiles were far too light and the hive easily moved around as we placed tiles.

We hunted all over town for some hexagonal tiles but eventually had to order online. We found some decent marble tiles on Amazon with free shipping, yay!

The marble is nice and heavy and smooth, but has some irregularities and tendency to chip that I don't like. We are still looking for a better material.

For our second set, we decided that we didn't really like the Gug, and replaced him with a Fisher From Beyond. Also we realized the error of having Mi-Go and Elder Things on the same team (enemies in At the Mountains of Madness) and replaced the Mi-Go with the Hunting Horror.

Here is the current lineup:
Hastur, Cthulhu : Bee
Nyarlathotep, Shoggoth : Mosquito
Shub Niggurath, Dagon : Ladybug
Byakhee, Flying Polup : Ant
Hunting Horror, Hound of Tindalos : Grasshopper
Elder Thing, Deep One : Spider
Fisher From Beyond, Yog Sothoth : Beetle

A cheat sheet helped us keep track:

We have played several games with the second set. It works really well and we love the theme.

I came across this excellent Cthulhu Christmas tree. We play a lot of Lovecraftian games around here, so we think this is pretty wicked.
