I’ve been following Wil Wheaton’s blog http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/ for quite some time now. It turns out that he is also a big-time gamer in addition to being an actor. He recently started a youtube channel Tabletop http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4F80C7D2DC8D9B6C where he plays a board game with actors and others and shows you how to play.
They are running through some of the Eurogames Like Settlers of Catan, and Ticket to Ride as well as games like ZombieDice.
Two of the games that he has shown on Tabletop - Tsuro and Get Bit! I was able to try out at Keycon over the weekend.Read more »

Keycon 29 - Grid games debut

I first came to Keycon to play Car Wars back at Keycon 3 and used to come year after year. I had run a local game convention called Wincon and had even run the gaming room at Keycon for a few years but haven’t attended Keycon in about a decade (kids will do that to you). We still popped by every year to check out the dealers’ room but didn’t attend the convention.

But when Tim asked me to help by running gaming, I couldn’t say no to him. He had always been very helpful to us and had never really asked for anything in return. He had a specific list of games that he wanted to see so I had to comply and was glad to do so.

Just prior to the convention, Tim had to drop out of being the con chair. Which meant that I didn’t have to run everything Tim had wanted but I still felt compelled to follow through on my commitment.

Overall, the gaming went well. We had Scott from the Manitoba Pathfinder Lodge running Pathfinder Society organized play scenarios all weekend.

Jim from Jimcon was there with a bunch of his own games and a bunch of games from Game Knight that people could borrow and play. Together we ran the Great Canadian Board Game Blitz on Saturday starting at noon. We weren’t sure what kind of a turn out we would have but we got eighteen players signed up. Twelve players played in at least 3 of the 5 rounds and five players played in all 5 rounds.

I didn’t get to see much of the rest of the convention but I was able to run my Grid Games – Disc Battles and Lightcycles on the Friday night. I finished making the grid that afternoon using black foamcore and pin striping.
The Disc Battles went well. The rules held up fine until we got down to just two players when it became more of a matter of waiting for the right run of cards.
I didn’t manage to finish the 3D trails for the Lightcycles but was able to trim down some post-it notes to use instead. The rules still need a bit more clarifications but the basic structure seemed to work fine.

I also ran Circus Imperium on the Saturday night. We had a great turnout with nine players and were down to a single player by the third lap due to players in HTH both knocking each other out - twice.

Ogre - Designer Edition - snubbed by Steve

I got into OGRE with the 1982 SJG edition. I always liked it and have picked up many versions – including the computer game for my Apple IIc – which allowed you to play against the computer controlled Ogre.

Last year word came around about Steve wanted to do an Euro-style version of the game with bigger counters in a solid box for $100. I was definitely in for a version and signed up for info. Wednesday I got early word about a Kickstarter program where they were raising money to gauge interest in the new Designer Edition which would be released in November. They only sent this out to those who had signed up for Ogre info.Read more »

Figure buying vs painting total for 2011

A few years ago I started keeping track of my figure buying total compared to my figure painting total. One of the websites I follow, Matakishi’s Tea House lists his monthly figure painting total - with figures painted versus figures bought. He also has some great looking terrain projects that he has done and some great tutorials. He isn’t updating as much as he used to though.

I hadn’t painted figures in a few years but had just acquired a bunch of Starship Troopers figures so I figured I would start to keep track. Since I probably have at least several hundred and at most about 2K figures already, I figured that it should be not improbable to stay ahead of the curve.

Little did I know. Read more »

2011 Heroclix overview

I didn’t pick up much this year - Heroclix-wise. I got a few LEs at the beginning of the year and some of the Fast Forces and the Doctor Manhattan for Christmas. In between, they cranked out another three sets and my numbers only increased. Even though all three sets were Marvel based, I still didn’t pick up any of them (normally the sets I am more likely to skip are the DC ones). Read more »

So here are my basic thoughts on this - from from the summer. I'm looking for a very simple game to run at conventions. It's more of an abstract game than a dice-rolling game but we'll see.Read more »

There was an online Game Design Concepts course back in 2009. It is still available to follow through at http://gamedesignconcepts.wordpress.com/

The second assignment was to design a board game adaptation of a video game. I had chosen to do SNAFU from Intelivision - which had been based on the original light cycle battle from Tron as well as other simple arcade games.Read more »

Here are the basic rules. They are pretty fleshed out at this point. I'm still in the process of making counters and advanced rules but this is the gameplay from which I'm basing it.
