Space Hulk: Death Angel The Card Game

Wifey surprised me with a trip to Barnes and Noble on Date Night where I picked up a copy of Space Hulk: Death Angel. I wasn't sure about , but hey it was on sale.
After a quick read through the rules, I realized that whoever wrote these rules didn't know how to organize a rule book. TO YOUTUBE!!! After a few videos, I picked up the general idea and structure of the game enough that the rules started to make sense.
OK, that problem out of the way, I set-up a solo game and played through to the end. There were times I thought I was gone and others that felt like I had this in the bag. In the end, I lost at the final location with just two Genestealers left. Bad dice rolls brought me down.
It was a fun little game that I can see would be a lot more fun with more people. As a solo game it was missing some of the things that might add a little more tension to the game as you can coordinate your move with ease when you are the only player. I will probably play a few more solo games but I see this as a quick 2-3 player game with my group.

Thunderstone Follow-up

I have had the chance to play Thunderstone solo twice now and I would have to say I am happy with it. It has the same strategic element that I liked in the multiplayer version where you have to think about the cards your getting.
I started out bad. I kept forgetting that the monsters keep coming. After the fourth monster hit the village I had to switch tactics and start attacking just to keep the points off that pile. After a bit I started pulling the combos that let me snag more than the little monsters.
Overall, I really like this game and it will probably be pulled out more than the other games I have. Oh, and my wife did buy me the basic Thunderstone to add to the Dragonspire set she got me for Christmas.

Thunderstone: Dragonspire

Been awhile since I have posted, but life got in the way. My wife got me Thunderstone: Dragonspire for Christmas this year and I couldn't have been happier. She HATES boardgames and has on several occasions asked why I am so interested in them. So this was a big surprise to open.
Anyways, I open it up and get the first game set up. I decide that I will play both hands myself to learn the rules and to get a good feel for the game before I try to get other people to play. Set-up was simple enough and I had a grip on the game quickly.
The game took longer than I expected (mainly from continually looking up rules), but I got through it in about an hour. The game plays well with plenty of strategy to get to the endgame. Cards are diverse and you have to make sure you don't go to heavy on attack and leave magic and vice versa.
Overall I really like the game and am looking forward to trying out the solo variant that is posted online. My wife has even said she might be looking to get me some of the expansions to get more cards to fill out the box more.

The Long Task Begins...

So last week I finally got my World of Warcraft Board Game in the mail. My wife decided she wanted to open it up to see all the minis (she loves minis). We open it up and she is amazed by the amount of minis the game has. Before this the most she had seen was Castle Ravenloft, and this has almost 3 times as many.
So, as she is looking at the bag of minis, I start to punch out the chits. There are only 4 boards, how long can this take? Well, there are a lot of little tokens that took me about 15 mins to punch. I had to be careful as these boards really wanted to tear. But, I got them punched, sorted, and bagged.
Now comes the long and delicate task of painting my minis. This is one of my favorite this to do. There is nothing like taking a plan piece of plastic and turning it into something that looks like it could come alive. As there are 130 minis in this game, this is going to take a while.

Just Waiting...

So back on April 20th I got this wild hair to buy the now out of print World of Warcraft Games. I found the Adventure Game one just fine but had some difficulties finding the big box Board Game. I looked around and I guess that was the week everyone was sold out.
Not wanting to give up, I did something I never do... I went on eBay without my wife. I found it and ordered it. That was the first mistake. The next day I got a message saying that the vendor was sold out and would not be completing my order. But they took my money!
I sent them a message and they blamed PayPal for it. A week later I had my refund and had ordered it from a vendor on amazon.com. Second mistake. They took my money and said it was shipped on April 28th and that the delivery window was from May 5th to MAY 20TH! OK, so I will have to wait for it, thats fine.
Well May 20th comes and goes with no sign of the game and I send the vendor a message through Amazon. I get an email back saying that they got a message from the post office stating that the package couldn't be delivered in the box they used. They would be contacting UPS to overnight it to me.
Fine again. What is another day. That was a Friday. I didn't hear back from them until Monday. "Oh, My local UPS store closed and I have to drive to another. I will overnight it to you tomorrow and you should have it by last delivery on Wednesday."
So here I am. Waiting for a UPS truck to show up. I hope this will be the end of it. And the lessen here is, WHY DO I NEED THIS GAME AGAIN???

Busy Week...

It was a busy work week. I didn't really get a chance to play any games. The gaming table was taken up with cupcake decorations for my little girl's pre-school graduation (which isn't till the end of next week).
I have had the chance to play some VASSAL through email. My opponant is very patient with me as I have managed to mess up just about every move I have made. But, I am really enjoying it and am hoping I can get a few people I know to get into it.
Well, here's hoping that I can pull things together to play a game or two this week.

Castle Ravenloft

Ravenloft is an interesting game by itself. I have played the first campaign many times but I never "won" until I modified the rules a bit. This is just a small variant that is printed in the rulebook. I used all of the healing surges (5) and that seems to help a lot.
I think the problem that a lot of people have with this game is that it is HARD as is. I find that the best strategy for this game is to try and avoid the battles as much as possible. I find the wizard makes this easier than the other classes.
So if you like hard games, give this one a shot. I am going to try the Wrath of Ashardalon as soon as I can borrow it from my brother, but in the mean time, I just got WoW: TAG in the mail and I am wanting to try the variant for that.

Pocket Civ

Well, I tried out Pocket Civ Yesterday. Just looking at it, I was a little daunted by the 28 page rulebook. After reading it though, it is pretty straight forward. I used the VASSAL engine module to play as my printer is out of order at the moment. I played for only about 15 minutes before I had to get going on something else, but I will definitely go back to it when I get the chance.

Introduction

Gordon Utley Jr

mbmbmbmbmb
Greetings,
I decided I would try to document my attempts to play the solo variants found on BGG for the games that I own. The reason behind this is that I have found myself without any group to play with. My wife is distrustful of any game not found at a Wal-Mart or Target and my gaming group has moved on. I am also on a weird schedule at work which flips my free time around to when nobody can join me in a game.
I am new to the whole board gaming community and am looking forward to trying out all the ideas I have found on this site.
Sincerely,
-Gordon Utley Jr
