It's Research, Really...

Greetings Heroes,
So I know I said I would be expanding on my game idea, and I will soon. But I have had a revelation of a sorts on some mechanic roadblocks I was having in my head. While the answer was insanely simple, it took seeing another game doing it to get me through the road block.

The discovery came from Mansions Of Madness, specifically from how the cards are used in combat. If you have never played MoM, I will elaborate just a tiny bit.

Michael has a Machine Gun for his weapon. He goes to attack but MoM uses a card deck that you draw through until you find a card that says "Ranged Weapon Attack". And you read the card and it tells you how to complete the attack, but it isn't always by shooting directly. Thus adding variety to the combat system in the game.

That is an really awesome system that I have never seen before. I obviously won't be using the same exact method in my own game. But it expanded in my brain what all cards can be used for in a game. It may sound silly I know, but sometimes I just need to see things done to know that they can be done.

Off the topic of design, everyone not offened with setting of Mansions Of Madness should go right now and watch every single video done by

in his Learn To Play By Watching It Played: Mansions Of Madness Video Series. Being able to watch a game being played with such great quality video alone would be worth the effort to watch. But the interaction of Mr. Smith and his son and daughter are just great to watch as well. In Game wise I was really attached also because of the added Role Play elements put in by the players of the game and performed for each turn of play. Just a great set of videos that everyone should watch!

(NOTE: The game was intended as Play By Forum that was filmed by Mr. Smith playing out the turns with his daughter to assist. That is what I meant above talking about the players)

How Does This Always Happen!

Greetings Programs!

So I am one of many wannabe board game designers here on BGG. And earlier today I was checking out the different session reports and such and I saw one that caught my attention. I clicked on it and the description was very much some of the same elements of the game I am working on in my head. Now I will not be posting the game in question because that is just rude. But there is also enough of a difference that I don't think mine will get lost or anything. Especially as mine is in my head mostly.

But this always seems to happen to me! I have been a creator of stories for years, some good but probably most not so much. But it used to drive me crazy when I would have an idea and then I hear about a movie or a different book that is using basically the same idea.

To my knowledge, the government doesn't have a mind ray up and going. But there were times I swear someone stole the ideas right from my head. I am going to keep going with my game, after all I can change it later. But the situation did make me shake my head a bit...
