Misty Mountains are rich in gold and gems. Countless treasures are hidden in their depths – but even more grief these underground riches have brought to the local inhabitants. For long days and nights slave-miners go deep into the stone depths. Seeing no sunlight for years they are driven by the impatient whips of the unbending Overseers. And when the mines become depleted their greedy owners send soldiers to seize new pits. That is the time when glittering steel and bloodshed rules the canyons. Four races clashes in the mortal combat for the wealth of the Misty Mountains. Skillful Dwarfs, mighty Giants, fearless Orcs and sly Goblins – which of them will capture the crown of King under mountains?
In the board game Kings Under Mountainsfrom two to four participants will develop the bowels of the Misty Mountains, trying to extract as many treasures as possible. Each player will rule one of the equally ranked races: Giants, Dwarfs, Goblins or Orcs. To play the game participants use special cards: race units on the front side – each with his own strength from 0 to 9, and mines on the back side – which players have to capture and pack with the slave-miners during the game process. In the beginning of the match each player is dealt six cards in his hands from the deck and next eight cards are put on the table by differed sides – four as units and four as mines.
On his turn player sends one of units from his hand into the mine to capture it (if mine lies in the centre of the table), or to develop it (if the mine has been already captured by the player). After his movement player has to draw one unit card from the table or take one card blindly from the deck. To capture one mine it is necessary to send there certain quantity of units (usually 1-3). Though, only the last race unit card that was played on the mine determines who captures it (even if last unit was sent by the player who represents another race). While mine is in the centre of the table, anyone can play cards on it.
After the mine is captured it has to be developed by its owner. To do this, owner of the mine have to send inside specified number of the slave-miners of other races except his own (as usual one-by-one each player’s turn). Some mines require an Overseer, which means that when the mine has enough slave-miners in it, player has to cover them with the additional card of his race unit. After the mine is filled with miners it brings certain amount of victory points. The sum of these points will determine the winner in the end of the match.
Kings Under Mountains – is a quick and simple game with a series of tactical nuances. First of all, cards for each mine (both while capturing/developing) have to be placed strictly in increasing strength order: the more powerful on the less powerful (only exception: 0 strength unit can be played only on 9 strength unit). Secondly, in the end of the game all not completely developed mines take away victory points. By the way, it is important to note that the end of the game often occurs relatively fast and unexpected. Thirdly, while playing other races units, players can toss their opponents unfavorable mines with less victory points and larger size. It is not enough to rely on luck to win the game – one have to plan his own actions and follow the opponent’s moves.
Kings Under Mountains is created by independent author’s group “Triohgrannik” (literal Russian translation: “Trihedron”. On “Triohgrannik” account are: “Igrosphere” exhibition and board games developers’ competition awards, published board game “Kingdoms”, two more board games are prepared to be published and dozen of game projects are in the development.

Today we are talking about the Founders of the Empire, a new Russian board game. The game was released in Russia by Rightgames LLC in early October, and you will be able to try international version of the game at Essen Spiel, booth 1-F161. Our host is
, creator and writer of the most popular Russian blog about board games, boardgamer.ru. He talks to co-authors of the Founders of the Empire: board and video game designer and producer Aleksei Kalinin, and board game journalist, editor, translator, developer Petr Tyulenev.
Yuri Tapilin. Greetings gentlemen! There is little known about the Founders at the moment and there is very little information on it in the web, so could you please tell us in a few words about the game?
Petr Tyulenev. The Founders of the Empire is a classic family board game where everyone is developing their own nation and gaining victory points in order to win. By using landscape tiles players form production chains. For example you can take water from a lake, stones from a cliff and get a gold mine, then you build a tavern next to the mine and a field, and after that you can erect a temple to Dionysius http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionysius. And this simple base mechanic is topped with different action tokens that give players more diversity, allowing them to buy a required resource form an opponent, pillage someone’s tile…
Alexey Kalinin. The main idea was to bring to the table the atmosphere and feel of the civilization-type video games, such as the Settlers. From this idea came the production chains that need to be formed during the tile placement, the goal of finding a good place for each tile etc.
PT. I think that the “geographical” aspect of the Founders is one of the best sides of the game. Not only you need to produce a specific resource somewhere but you should actually consider the placement of the tiles. For example using a War token you can pillage an opponent’s tile, but only on his “frontier” — this means that strategically important tiles should be placed closer to you. Or carriages that move resources between tiles — with two or three of these tokens you can build a real supply line.
YT. Petr, as far as I know this is the first time your name appears on a game box. Does this mean you are a beginning designer?
PT. A couple of years ago Timofey Bokarev and I have created two board games for a television holding, Miss Russian Night and Боец (The Fighter). They can be found on BGG. So actually the Founders is my third published game. I also have quite a lot of experience in developing board game projects by other designers. It’s interesting that the idea to make a board game together appeared to Alexey and me when I was working on Alexey's King's Bounty on the publishing side.
YT. How are you working together? Do you divide responsibilities: for example, Petr writes the rules while Alexey considers the game mechanics? How do you agree on the key points?
AK. The original idea was mine but there’s little left from it. We met a few times, did some tests, had some discussions. When we are looking at the game now it’s hard to tell Petr's suggestions from mine. Nevertheless, I can say that Petr did much more work on the game than I did. That’s probably why he doesn’t want to make the next game with me :-)
PT. Let's take it a little slower, I don't want to wake up pregnant :-) The idea of the game belongs to Alexey, I have worked on the prototype and thought things through, we tried different approaches, fixed bugs and mistakes. The writing and editing was on me, Alexey took upon himself the visual design and formal questions, the stuff I’m not good at.
YT. I consider the visual design of the Founders to be one of the best in the whole line of RightGames. Whom should we thank for this?
AK. I have a lot of experience in the field of board and video games both as a producer and project manager. I have chosen the style and the artist. The publishers agreed with my decision straight away while Petr still seems to have doubts about it.
PT. While designing the game, I have imagined it in a Carcassonne-style medieval setting, but now I’m really glad the we have moved to the Antiquity. I had doubts about the illustrations when they were digital but now, after having seen the printed version I must say that the design is really quite good.
YT. How long did you work on the game? Can you single out some key moments in the history of the making of the Founders? Who participated in the testing of the game?
PT. Alexey sent me his draft on the 22nd of February and kept reminding for a month that it’s time to start doing something. The first prototype was done on the 21st of march (it was obviously unplayable) and on the 5th of April RightGames decided to publish it. After that we had a lot of work with the graphics, rules, layout, the English version and this took up most summer — we couldn’t leave any of this aside.
AK. Frankly speaking we have worked for about six weeks. Petr can work really fast when he has time. As I remember we had three main drafts, and we kept making each one simpler and simpler. In the first one the tiles were in the players hands. The second had a bad system of drawing new tiles. And we have fixed the balance here and there.
PT. There were about ten people who took part in the testing, mostly family, friends and relatives. Since the game is naturally balanced by the inner symmetry we mostly tested the game play. As soon as people started to suggest playing one or two more times we understood it was time to take it to the publishers.
YT. How did Founders end up with a publisher? Whom did you show the prototype? Why do you think it was RightGames that took up publishing your project?
AK. First the game was shown to Nikolay Pegasov from Hobby World and he didn’t like it at all. So we started negotiations with the RightGames team. There are many reasons why they liked it. In the first place, the game itself is good.
PT. I think the game ended up in the spirit of what RightGames usually publishes. A simple game mechanic, wide audience, small playing time. The simple and classical format they both like and know how to work with. It even feels a bit like Potion-Making, the absolute bestseller of RightGames.
YT. After playing the game once I thought that the gameplay of the Founders is similar to some form of solitaire where each player is doing his own thing and hardly interacts with other players. Is this true? If so do you consider it to be a good thing or a bad thing?
PT. Well I for one don’t see anything bad in “solitaires”, and the Founders really have some “solitaire” traits, but actually the game has a significant level of player interaction. If players have an eye on their opponents' actions they can ruin their plans with the help of tokens and by manipulating the available tiles. Of course there is no direct confrontation, and the game doesn't force players to interact. Everyone plays the way they like. I'd say that there's as much interaction in the Founders as in average euro-style family board game.
AK. Yes, the game seems a bit like “solitaire”, as well as many economic games. But since all players see what tiles are available they can think a few turns ahead and really spoil their opponent’s plans. It’s a lot like the Settlers or Carcassonne: you can play almost without interaction or you can keep up an aggressive tactic. And frankly speaking, solitaire isn't a thing to be scared of. It’s a common type of family games.
YT. Sometimes you're looking at a game and see that this one is definitely for the boys. Or that one would be more popular with the girls. Can you put the Founders into one of the gender categories? Do you think certain elements of the game would be preferred by the male audience or the female audience?
AK. I wouldn’t say that there are any gender-specific elements on the game. The Founders is a classical family euro game for a wide audience.
YT. Do you plan multi-language release?Are you taking the game to the Essen Spiel fair?
PT. The game is fully complete and is already sold in Russia. The game box bears an English title as well as Russian one, and there are descriptions in the main European languages on the box back. So the game is ready for the Essen release. Of course the Russian version has the Russian rules inside, and we’ll have German and English rulebooks in Essen (and maybe more languages). The game itself is language independent. The Founders will be one of the main Essen releases of RightGames and I will be personally presenting it at our booth.
YT. What are your plans? Will there be any new games from the duo of “Tyulenev & Kalinin”?
AK. I would really like to design my next game with Petr. Currently we are planning the card game about coups and intrigues in 18-century Russia. It would be a thematic sequel of my old game Knyaz'ya (The Princes), but with completely different mechanic.

Founders of the Empire
Three hundred years before the Common Era. The shores of the Mediterranean Sea are inhabited by dozens of peoples, only one of which is destined to found a great civilization that will spread from Egypt to Britannia. Take up the reigns of rule in your hands and prove that you are the only one worthy to unite half the world under your banner! Add new territories, harvest natural resources, trade with your neighbors, invite skilled craftsmen and erect temples because the favor of the Gods is not taken lightly when one wishes to be known as a Founders of the Empire!
In “Founders of the Empire” each player develops his civilization using territory tiles that either gives useful resources or victory points. These squares are of four types: nature, village, city and victory. Nature tiles give the most basic resources: wood, stone, water, plants – but they can be added to your territories without any special conditions. More useful tiles can only be placed neighboring tiles that produce necessary resources (for example a stable requires water and wood while a gold mine requires – stone and water). Victory tiles are temples and alters of ancient deities that grant their owner victory points. AT the beginning of the game, depending on the number of players 8 or 12 tiles are opened, as soon as all the tiles are added to the player’s territories the game ends.
During his turn a player must add a tile to his nation and can also play a special action token. These tokens are given for adding a city tile to your nation: war camp, workshop, market, taverns. With the war token a player can pillage another players tile so that it won’t give any resources or victory points, - but you can only attack the furthest border tiles in a players nation. With the carriage token a player can unite his tiles and “deliver” resources they develop between them. The coin token allows a player to buy a needed resource from an opponent; the opponent keeps the coin token and may use it later on. Finally the taverns attract the attention of skilled craftsmen that specialize in a certain resource: the wine-maker can be played on a vineyard, the stable-master on a stable and so on. A tile occupied by a craftsman no longer brings its owner resources, instead it shall grant victory points at the end of the game.
Founders of the Empire – is a family European style board game for 2-4 players. One game takes up approximately 30 minutes. The world premiere of the game shall be at the International board game fair Internationale Spieltage SPIEL that will take place starting 24-27 October 2103.

Aleksei Kalinin — one the more know Russian board game developer. He has created such games as Knjaz'ja, The Black Prince, Nochnoj Dozor, Kod DaVinci, po sledam velikih tayn, King's Bounty. He is currently employed at Wargaming.net, known for its popular mass multiplayer online game "World of Tanks".
Petr Tyulenev - a professional board gamer for over 10 years. Author of countless articles and reviews for the press, one of the creators of the Russian board game portal Tesera.ru. Was the editor-in-chief of a hobby magazine “Mir Fantastiki” last year and the biggest board game publisher in Russia – Hobby World.

The game box Kitchen Garden contains everything you will need to make your land fertile – beds, seeds, a bazaar, a worker. Just sit around, sip on some tea, draw those cards while the garden digs itself up and grows over with weed. There’s even a Holiday to help you relax and a Crow to steal crops from your neighbors.
At the beginning of the game each player receives a task sheet with his garden, on it you can see the type and quantity of plants that need to be planted on it. The first person to complete their task wins the game. The players then receive a set of three special cards: “Crow”, “Bazaar” and “Holiday”. The spare task sheets and special cards are placed back in the game box. The playing deck is shuffled and each player receives four cards, another six cards are placed in the market at the center of the table. The last person that did some gardening gets to go first.
During his turn, a player can perform one action which usually consists of drawing a card to your hand or playing a card from your hand. There are two ways to take a card: draw a face down card from the deck or a face up card from the market – with the later you’ll need to place a card from your hand in exchange for the one from the market. The main way to play a card is to plant it on a bed, in other words, place a plant card next to the task card. The played card needs to be of the correct type (strawberries don’t grow on cabbage beds) and will need to be of the correct quantity. For example you need to plant five strawberry bushes using only two cards, you won’t be able to play a card with one strawberry on it since there are no cards with four strawberries; and you won’t be able to play two more cards with two strawberries on them because you can only play one more card to this bed. Except for plant cards, the deck also contains weeds – you can plant them in your neighbor’s garden. A weed on a bed not only takes up space but also prevents a player from finishing it. To get rid of that pesky weed, you need to play a “Worker” card during your turn – they can also be found in the deck.
Instead of a normal action, you can play one of your special cards. The “Bazaar” card allows you to replace all the cards in the market and swap up to two cards from your hand. When the “Holiday” arrives each player discards 3 cards from their hand a draw 3 cards from the deck. The “Crow” card allows you to take a card from the discard pile and if played with the “Sluggard” card – to steal from your opponents bed. You are allowed to discard one “Worker” card or one special card to get an extra action this turn. You can also play the “Sluggard” on an opponent to make him miss his turn (the “Worker” can protect from this card).

Evolution: Continents is the second expansion to the educational board game Evolution: The Origin of Species. The expansion contains 42 cards with eight new traits, 3 special continent cards, 6 territory divider cards, a die, extra food tokens and game rules. You will need the basic “Evolution” deck to play. “Continents” can also be combined with the first expansion – Evolution: Time to Fly
In “Evolution” each player controls his own population of animals by giving them useful traits to survive. The player whose population at the end of the game will be the biggest and most advanced wins the game. The base game contains almost a hundred special cards each of which has a trait for the animals – there are 17 different traits in total. The expansion Evolution: Continents adds another 8 traits and a completely new element – dividing the game zone into two continents and the ocean.
When a player adds a new animal to his population he decides on which continent that animal is going to live – Laurasia or Gondwana – and plays it either above or below the special territory divider card. If an animal becomes “Swimming” it is immediately moved to the ocean (to the right of the divider). Each territory has an independent food bank: in Laurasia there is usually less food, in Gondwana there’s usually more (though it all depends on the dice roll), the amount of food in the ocean is stable and remains the same each turn. Also animal traits work only in the territory they are located: a carnivore from Gondwana cannot attack an animal in the ocean or share a pairwise trait with someone in Laurasia. But there are some new traits (and also “flight” from the “Time to fly” expansion) that can allow animals to migrate from one continent to another and swimming animals can also migrate to the ocean.
- Migration — allows the players animals to move between territories.
- Neoplasm — a cruel parasite that “turns off” one of the animals traits each turn eventually brining its death.
- Suckerfish — allows the animal to move with a migrating animal (even if the animal belongs to another player).
- Regeneration — if an animal with this trait was eaten by a carnivore it is revived at the end of the turn with all its traits.
- Recombination — allows to animals to swap traits.
- Herding — an animal with this trait cannot be attacked if the territory contains an equal or higher amount of herding animals than carnivores.
- Cnydocytes — “turns off” all the traits of a carnivore that ate an animal with this trait.
- Aedificator — increases the food base on a territory.
To play “Evolution” with the expansion simply shuffle all the trait cards from the base game and “Continents”, give each player a divider and place the territories on the game table to place food tokens on them. If you are playing with two or three people we recommend to place about half the deck back in the box so the game plays quicker.
“Evolution” has another expansion – “Time to fly”. If you want you can combine both expansions and the basic game – now up to eight people can play the game! If you would like to purchase the full set of the game please check the “Evolution” gift edition.

On the 29th of June, in Moscow, regular Games day will start – the annual board game festival. The tradition of Games day comes from the United Kingdom, where it first took place in 1975 with the help of the gaming publisher Games Workshop Ltd.. To this day the company produces its world famous tactical board games with miniatures (wargames) Warhammer FB, Warhammer 40k and Lord of The Rings; no wonder that Games days throughout the world are associated with GW. But in Russia this festival brings together all board game lovers and fans, not only wargamers. The Russian Games day, for over 10 years now, has brought together national designers, publishers and distributors of board games.
Games day 2013 will take place on the 29th of June in the 57th pavilion of the All-Russian Exhibition Centre (metro station “VDNKh”) from 10:00 to 18:00. This year the organizers are planning to have even more board game fans and publishers.

Together with “Alegris”, the club “Portal” will be introducing the guests of Games day with a great wargame system Warmachine\Hordes that has a very thought out gaming mechanic and excellent miniatures. You will see demo games, learning games, tournaments, sales. Also the “Portal” stand will have the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game, based on a “galaxy far far away”, the new release of this spring – the adventure game Relic, based on Warhammer 40k, a cyberpunk game Netrunner, that became one of the best CCG’s of last year and many other board games.
A few other Russian gaming companies will be participating in the event.

The game Evolution: The Origin of Species was rewarded at kids festival "Start Up" in Moscow.
Start Up Fair is the place with all the needed resources for the productive pastime of parents and their children. It was organized the second time this year. And for the first time there was a new “Start Up” reward which nominations covered wide range of products and projects for kids (http://startupfair.ru).
The Board game “Evolution: The Origin of Species” became prize winner as the best family game. The winners were estimated by experts and costumers. The first short listing was made by experts of Psychological and Educational Examinational Center, where all kids products are being tested.
Then the winner was determined by internet-users and festival visitors.
The short list of family game category included Evolution: The Origin of Species, Potion-Making: Practice (both are published by Rightgames LLC), localization of Dixit Odyssey and Spot it!.
The winner was announced on the last day of “Start up” festival, the 28th of April in Russia in Moscow.
In late April were declared the winners of the Russian board game award "Tesera".
All games, published in Russian in 2012, competed for the championship in six categories. Three of those games were chosen to be the best:
Kosmonauts - undoubtedly the grand prize winner, a leader in three categories. This game is recognized as the best development of a Russian author, as well as the most innovative and most atmospheric game. In addition, "Kosmonauts" can be given the unofficial title of the most famous Russian game abroad in 2012: it was presented at the Essen fair and even for a time was in the "hot topic» (The Hotness) on BoardGameGeek. The creators of «Kosmonauts» Yuri Yamshchikov and Nadezda Penkrat - citizens of St. Petersburg, Russia’s northern capital, but their game were released by the Portuguese company - MESAboardgames throughout Europe. The Russian version of the game is sold in Russia by Rightgames LLC company.
"Ya tvoya ponimaj"
Я твоя понимай (I understands you) was named the best family game, as well as the best company game. This game, however, is almost unknown outside of Russia, though it also has a card on BoardGameGeek. The name of the game in the wrong Russian language reflects its essence: in the "Ya tvoya ponimaj" players overcome the language barrier, conveying complex concepts: "mobile phone", "television", "football" - using simple words, such as "cold", "woman" or "a lot". The game play of this board game feels a bit like Alias or Dixit: one player says a word, and others are trying to guess it. "Ya tvoya ponimaj" is also released by Rightgames LLC publishing and may be published in Europe.
Andor - under this abbreviated name was published the Russian edition of Legends of Andor Michael Menzel – was chosen as the best game of a foreign author. This beautifully designed table top adventure appeared in Russia at the same time with the original German edition (a rarity for Russian publishers), and, despite some shortcomings with the translation, Russian players rated the game highly. The publisher of "Andora" in Russia is the company Zvezda world-famous for its plastic miniatures.

And now a couple of words about the award.
The award "Tesera" - is part of a larger project on the promotion of board games in Russia. In 2010 launched the portal Tesera.ru - perhaps it can be called a Russian version of BoardGameGeek. The portal combines the functions of a board games encyclopedia, online media with a news feed and the regular publication of columnists, as well as a social network for boardgamers. More than 3000 people from Russia and the former Soviet Union visit “Tesera” on a daily basis. According to global standards, the figure is not very high, but we must remember that in Russia hobby board games are not as popular as in Europe or America. For example, the usual starter edition of a board game in Russian - 2-3 thousand copies. In other words, "Tesera" is attended by most Russian-speaking geeks - those who are actively interested in board games and who constantly keep watch for them.
The award "Tesera" was first presented in 2011 (for board games in 2010), the current award is the third in a row. Holders of the awards are determined not by every visitor of the portal of the same name, as you might think, but by a professional jury, formed by the organizers of "Tesera." The jury includes representatives of different groups of publishers and distributors of board games, club makers, known bloggers and just active users of "Tesera." Their voices determine the winners in each category. I must say that the majority of categories are represented by only games developed in Russia, while all localized board games are assembled into a single category "Best game by a foreign author." In addition, for the localization of the original title, release time does not matter - only the year when the game was in released in Russian. Thus, in the same category can compete such games as Cartagena, Innovation and "Legends of Andor."
A lion's share of the awards goes to Russian board games that, according to the organizers, should encourage local developers. Interestingly, "Rightgames" - is the only publisher whose board games became winners at “Tesera" all three years in a row. In 2011, the best card game was called Evolution: The Origin of Species in 2012, the best children's game was The Jam and 2013 brought victory to Kosmonauts and Я твоя понимай. Let's see if we can continue this proud tradition next year.
The company Rightgames LLC, a developer and publisher of board games in Russia, will be taking part in the international fair of board games "Igrosfera" for the second time, which will be held from 17 to 19 May 2013 in the Ukrainian city of Lviv. In the year since the previous "Igrosfera" we have released quite a few interesting games that we are happy to show to visitors at the festival.

The author gets a table and 2 chairs at the time agreed with the organizers. Getting additional equipment is also consistent with the organizers.

The presentation will take place in a specially designated place for the jury.
How much time is given for the presentation?
Jury will add as much time as necessary for project examination if the project interests members of jury in during the first 10 minute.
Moreover, before the presentation of the project it will be a 10 minute video recording (if author agree), during which the author tells about his project for YouTube spectators of IGAMES channel.
