The Zpocalypse Food Deck
Food cards represent a days worth of sustenance for a single survivor. They could theoretically represent a ‘can of beans’, an ‘MRE’, ‘water’ or a ‘box of Twinkies’. The context of what they are is unimportant. If a survivor is not provided with a food card each day, they will not have the strength needed to fight off the horde when night time comes.
Food: This card is used to feed yourself, and the survivors you are protecting.
Irradiated Food: This card acts like food, but has inflicts 1 hp of dmg to your survivor due to it being, not quit fresh.

Today we’re going to show you how some of the assets are assembled for our upcoming game Zpocalypse.
To facilitate a limited budget and staff we’ve used a custom built website to help assist in editing our content. Stored in a MySQL database we edit our content via web forms and PDF batchers to add, edit, sort, organize and ultimately build our vast sets of assets.
**Here we see the loading page of Zee Builder. From here we can search and edit any card or tile used in Zpocalypse.
**Editing the Samurai sword Armory Card. From here we can edit, tweak and balance the information used for this card.
**Zee-Builder Armory Card page
**Zee-Builder Print Preview for card printing
Sometimes we upload so many versions we get lost, and need to review our files. Our online thumbnailer allows us to view previously uploaded artwork. This comes in handy when working on multiple machines, which may not have the most current artwork present on it.
**Zee-Builder Online thumbnail viewer
What made building this game so much fun was the ability to physically design our maps online using our tile builder.
**Zee Tile Builder, where the magic happens!
It works a lot like a slimmed down version of Photoshop. Our maps allow up to 16 layers of assets, qpactiy changing, rotation of objects, text, grid positioning and last but not least, final printing layout, complete with auto bleed tiling. The object mapper allows us to upload files to a directory and then lay them down and rotate, scale and position them on the various layers of each map.
**Zee Builder edit Hotel Lobby tile set(No Bleed)
Most of our tiles are designed to work in an 8x8inch layout, but we’ve built them so they can work with near most any of our other tile series, to allow for the maximum amount of re-playability in our games. Even if you’ve played with the exact same tiles previously, you could rotate and position them in such a way, as to have a completely different game form the one you had before.
**Zee-Builder -Editing the hotel Tile Set(tile Bleed shown)
Our Tile builder has allowed for our entire team to collaboratively build and design our tiles, using Transparent PNG files originally created in Photoshop by our talented artist.
**Zee Builder rotation of tile example
In its current iteration the Zee Builder is mission specific for just Zpocalypse. However it is our hope that if/when Zpocalypse takes off, we could tailor the Zee Builder to be a more generic online board game editor for future versions of our games, and maybe perhaps, some of yours!

Surviving the Zpocalypse!
Zpocalypse is played over a series of days. Each day consists of the following phases: Scavenge, Feed & Fortify, Something’s Happening and Combat. The game is designed to get increasingly difficult as each day progresses. An average game with 4 players trying to survive 2 days takes about about 90minutes. The game has rules that support up to 4 days, but those games can be considerably longer and more challenging.
Let's talk about the fourth and final phase in Zpocalypse! Phase IV: Combat Time to arm yourself and defend the bunker! Going around the board your squad performs actions as such as moving, attacking zombies, healing, and searching for better gear! Each player gets a turn to perform these actions using strategy and tactics, trying taking out as many zombies as possible before they move. All zombies move at once and then attack any adjacent players, they always move towards a player or towards the bunker. (There are specific rules regarding zombie movement which will be covered later!) Combat is kept simple, quick and fun. All information for a given weapon is listed right on its card. This game is not about just playing 1 character; you’re playing a whole squad, a zombie slaying team you've built up. As you build defenses, kill zombies, even heal players you gain skill points. Using your squad command board you control your groups’ stats, choosing which stats to boost with each skill point you earn. Each survivor you gain also has a special ability and requirements to unlock it. It’s important to note that the game is all about defending the bunker. Inside the bunker are the old, the young or those just too scared to pick up arms against the undead? If you let a zombie enter the bunker and eat your survivors... it’s almost certain doom!

Zpocalypse is played over a series of days. Each day consists of the following phases: Scavenge, Feed & Fortify, Something’s Happening and Combat! The game is designed to get more and more difficult as each day progresses. An average game with 4 players trying to survive 2 days takes about about 90minutes. The game has rules that support up to 4 days, but those games can be considerably longer and more challenging.
Let's talk about the third phase in Zpocalypse!
Phase III - Something's Happening
The "Something’s Happening" cards are the event cards of the game. They tell a story of what happens this particular game day/night to each player. This story could be good or it could be very bad! It also states how many zombies spawn on the zombie tiles placed at this time as well as how many squares the zombies can move. You could have some nights that are darker than others thus the zombies will move faster.
The game is set up so that each “day” you play will get harder and harder. This is accomplished by controlling the number of zombies which spawn each day. Each Something’s Happening card will have night 1-4 listed at the bottom. Night 1 has less zombies while night 4 has the most.

Let's talk about the second phase in Zpocalypse!
Phase II: Feed & Fortify
During this phase of the game you get a chance to breathe for a moment. Now is the time to feed your survivors, trade with other players, and fortify your base from the coming zombie horde. Any survivor you cannot provide food for cannot be used during the combat phase and must remain behind in your bunker from lack of strength.
* * * Note during this phase you may trade freely with other players. Let’s say you have a large cache of food, but no ammo for your firearms? You could trade food for ammo from another player. It could be on a one to one ratio or you could trade 2 food for one ammo, or give it away freely, it’s your supplies!
In Zpocalypse you will be facing an ever-growing number of zombies. You need to work together to defend your base. Use your collected supplies and survivors to build defenses to hold back the zombies. However let’s face it, this will only buy you extra time… the zombies will knock down your walls, destroy your gates, and break into your bunker! They will be coming for you and any survivors you had to leave behind in the bunker. Your fortifications and traps might buy you extra time, making the difference between life and death!

Let's talk about the first phase in Zpocalypse!
Phase I: Scavenging
Scavenging is a very important aspect of the Zpocalypse. It represents your daily events for finding resources and survivors to add to your squad. They also tell a story, revealing how your supply run went painting the world of Zpocalypse dark and grim... with an odd sense of humor!
Each player gets to roll the number of dice equal to their survival trait. For every 4, 5, or 6 rolled, the player will get a better haul of supplies, dictated by the table listed on each scavenging card. You’ll notice that the scavenging matrix shows 4 symbols. these represent how many cards you draw from those respective decks(Food, Supplies, Armory and Survivors).
Scavenging is also one of the ways in which the game board grows. Each player draws and places a new tile connecting it to the existing map. New zombies listed on the scavenge cards are placed on tiles representing the zombies who just followed you back from your supply run. These zombies remain on the board until combat begins.

Zpocalypse has gone through many renditions over the past year. In the beginning we created our cards, saved them as pdf pages, and would take them to a local print shop. The print shop had a beast of a printing machine and would spit out the 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper. They would then place our cards in a paper cutter, that could literally slice a person in half if it wasn't for the dozens safety features. This process was long and tedious.. it could only make 1 cut at a time, so with nine cards on a page you can easily imagine that's over 14 cuts. The cuts weren't precise by any means, but it got the job done. Oh and did I forget to mention that this wasn't exactly cheap.. Rough estimate: .30 cents a card using non laminated on 100lb gloss stock.
After the third trip to the printer I decided I wanted to prototype things a bit faster for Zpocalypse. We were already cutting out our own "tiles" using a Grandemark cutter and a custom die I had recently purchased (Links below). I looked into getting another die which would cut out 9 cards from a single sheet of paper with rounded corners and all. Cost was about $250 for the die. Works like a charm!
Next up was finding a cost effective printer which would handle the 100lb cover stock paper. After a month of searching and looking at reviews I found out the Xerox Phaser 6280 would do the job. At a price tag of about $450... it was worth a shot!
So now from my computer I can print cards and tiles and cut them out in a matter of minutes! After printing several copies of Zpocalypse I found my self running out of ink.. Turns out the printer using the "supplied" toner cartridges could only print about 450 full color pages. If my math is correct the cost comes down to about $0.022 cents a card for paper and toner.

Here are several pictures we have taken while going through the printing and cutting process!
We hope this was helpful! If you have any questions please feel free to leave us a comment.

Hello everyone, let's talk about the general combat and scavenging system that we created for Zpocalypse!
We wanted Zpocalypse's combat to be meaty and have depth. When trying to survive outside of your bunker... You will be managing your own squad of survivors. Each player can have a maxed out squad of 4 survivors, but only if you have enough food and supplies. If don't have enough rations to pass a food check... you may only end up having a squad of 2 or even 1. You can equip each survivor in your squad with a weapon, armor, and 2 items. All of this equipment can be found when scavenging outside of your bunker. When scavenging you can only bring back what your current squad can hold... this forces you to make important decisions regarding what your squad and survivors need. Do you keep the extra food and leave some of the heavier weapons behind? Or do you take the food and weapons... leaving valuable scrap parts and med packs behind? (Scrap parts are used when building bunker defenses such as gates, walls, and traps!)
There is always a great risk when scavenging as well. Zombies are drawn to your presence and placed on the game board each time you or a fellow player goes scavenging. Greedy players do tend to die first, as we have seen in many different play tests. This picture below will show you what happens to a player who risks running out in a street trying to grab extra weapons.
You can't see it, but there is a "draw armory" icon on top of that tank. The player needed one more weapon to have a fully equipped squad. Instead of waiting for other players to come help him clear the street of zombies... he just made a run for it. You can see that he made it, but he is now completely surrounded and will more than likely die, turning his whole squad into the undead. (4 additional zombies would be placed) Was it worth it?
In this next photograph you can see the last two players of the same game. They are held up in a back room with zombies closing in fast!
Did they survive Day 1 of Zpocalypse? Did they manage to fulfill their daily goal?
