I have thought that it would be a good idea to have a blog where I capture some of the interesting beverages I have tasted. It is really too bad I did not start this about three years ago, as that is when I first embarked on my beer renaissance in a serious way.
My purpose in starting this blog is mainly to capture some of the interesting beers I try. I suppose I could do this on RateBeer or BeerAdvocate, but hey, I have an account here and I am on BGG daily. I guess this will be the home for my new blog.
MY THOUGHTS Rating (0-5): This is another example of a beer that needs to be savoured. It has very interesting flavour profiles that undergo subtle changes as the beer warms up. I typically do not enjoy the higher alcohol content beers as much, but this is really a great beer. I will be the first to admit that I had to grow into this beer. Years ago, when I first tried Chimay Blue, I enjoyed it but I did not fully appreciate it. My palate has changed and evolved this past few years and a whole array of flavours are now available to me that I once missed in my earlier days of sampling. This is not a beer I will drink often, when I do, it is a treat and I tend to nurse a bottle over a long period, enjoying the change in flavour with the change in temperature.
Game Pairing:Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas This pairing is very easy. You need to escape your cosmopolitan life and adopt the lifestyle of a Belgian Monk. You are silently wandering around the monastery, gathering the ancient tomes that contain mystical knowledge and divine secrets, (probably the brew recipe for Chimay Blue).
Cheers, Bixby
Standard Disclaimer: I am not a beer judge, nor do I have a palate that is refined enough to tell you which type of hops were used in the making of a beer. I know very little about zymology. I am an average guy that likes to play boardgames and likes to drink beer. All you will get here is my opinion on what I like. That is all.
MY THOUGHTS Rating (0-5): Through this blog, I am discovering that there are an incredible amount of good beers that I thoroughly enjoy. This is another fine specimen. This is a very dark and smooth offering. I dare say this roasty goodness is a divine pleasure to enjoy. I drink a lot of Guinness and this beer is a treat that offers a significant level of flavour above and beyond my goto Guinness. Open, savour, enjoy.
Game Pairing:Battlestar Galactica You are a Cylon. You need to deceive your fellow players. Drink Oatmeal Stout. It is hard to conceal the deception that is plainly visible on your face. However, as your face contorts into expressions of delight and joy with each sip of your fine libation, your counterparts will leave you to your revelry and seek another target for the brig. Avoid the lynch mob. Stay out of the brig. Drink Oatmeal Stout: the favoured beer of all Cylons.

There I was in my backyard, sitting around my firepit on a warm summer evening, when a friend showed up with some beer to try from Dieu Du Ciel Micro Brewery. He was very excited to show me the Peche Mortel, but frankly, I fell in love with Routes des Epices. A beer made for me...
MY THOUGHTS Rating (0-5): Ok. This beer is perfectly suited for me. This is a top beer for me. I like spice, I like the peppery after taste. It came at me from out in left field during a period when I was sampling lots of different beers, playing the field, looking for my true love. There it was all this time, in a 341ml bottle. I think this is a great blend of flavours with enough spice to augment the enjoyment and separate it from other beers without being overpowering. I am sure this will not be everyone's brew of choice, but man o' man, do I enjoy this beer.
Game Pairing:Safranito Well, another easy pairing with this entry. Safranito of course. If you have not played Safranito, it is an interesting fusion of euro and dexterity game. A day at the spice market gathering your quality spices so you can make your coveted spice blends. Beer goes very well with dexterity games. Spice beer goes extremely well with dexterity games about trading spices.

You got Blackberry in my Porter / You got Porter in my Blackberry... ...whaaaa? This is exquisite. Hats off to the zany wacky experimentalists of the world.
MY THOUGHTS Rating (0-5): This is one of my Top 5 Beers. Porter is a style that I quite enjoy and this porter delivers. The blackberry is subtle and does not overpower the beer. It is a perfect marriage. I strongly recommend giving this a try if you like porters. I am betting you will not be disappointed.
Game Pairing:Crokinole A "Go to" beer deserves to be paired with a "go to" game: Crokinole. What a coincidence, they are both Canadian made. This can be a Great White North sanctioned blog entry. If it were not 7:23am right now, I would probably open one and play a game, but I think it is kind of early to play Crokinole.

I have heard this beer described as "Beef Jerky in a Bottle". It is actually hard for me to improve on that description. This is a very unique smoke beer and worth a try.
MY THOUGHTS Rating (0-5): I like dark beer. I like novelty beer. I like beef jerky. I do not like smoke. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this brew. I am always up for trying new things and I am glad I did with this beer. The smoke flavouring is really quite pleasant. If you are an adventurous beer drinker, give this a whirl. I think this is a beer that I will enjoy as a treat once in awhile.
Game Pairing:Flash Point: Fire Rescue Ok, this is a no-brainer. After a day of fighting fires and saving helpless family pets in Flash Point: Fire Rescue, it is time to unwind with a smoked beer. Enjoy.

MY THOUGHTS Rating (0-5): This is a very enjoyable brew.It is one of three beers I will always order when I go to Bushwakkers. It is hearty and sure goes well with a burger. I am glad this is available in off sale, nice to have one or two in the fridge at home.
Game Pairing:Agricola The earthiness of a Sodbuster Brown Ale makes this a shoe in for a game of Agricola. Throw on your overalls, tighten those suspenders, clean the dirt from under your fingernails, and crack open a Sodbuster.

It is important to establish credibility in the first entry of any blog. I have just the beer to set the tone. So much for foreplay by talking about lesser beers, let's go straight to:
MY THOUGHTS Rating (0-5): I quite enjoy this beer. I tend to lean heavily to ales instead of lagers anyway. This beer has an incredible fusion of smoke, bacon, and maple. All three flavours are prevalent without being over the top. To me, this is not just a novelty beer, but a beverage that will always have a place in my heart and beer fridge.
Game Pairing:The Castles of Burgundy As you ferret out the elegant nuances of Castles of Burgundy you can experience the various flavours in this exquisite ale. Both should be savoured.
