So here is what I am working on:

I wanted to be able to rotate the arms at the shoulder and elbow joints. Looking at the model, I thought 'hey, maybe a washer would fit around the elbow joint!?' So I found some washers that would fit:

8mm Flat washers fit perfectly. To ensure they wouldn't interfere with rotating the arm, I used some snips to trim the washers slightly.





Then I glued the washer on using Army Painter superglue.

Then I drilled the elbow joint on the upper arm and put in 1/8" magnets. They were small enough to fit and I used two in order to ensure they would hold the weight.







Next I used some larger, flat disc magnets in the shoulder joints and hip joint.



And Voila!

Imperial Assault Second Campaign Game & Mars Attacks the MiniaturesGame!

Last night we played the second game in our Imperial Assault Campaign.

Heroes Setup:
Gaarkan with Wookie Fortitude
Fenn Signis with Tactical Move

We played the Han Solo side mission and it was a blast. Without spoiling it, here are some pictures of the action:

A few comments on the game:
When playing two players, the heroes gain the ability Legendary, which adds 10 hit points. In scenarios where the dark side wins by killing the heroes, this seems pretty powerful. In this scenario the dark side needed to kill Han Solo to win, and he didn't have the Legendary ability, so it was a challenge to keep him alive. The dark side won this scenario. Now here is a question: Do allies like Han Solo have the ability to attack twice like the other heroes? Our reading of the rules said no, but we weren't quite sure.

I have thoroughly enjoyed both games of Imperial Assault. It feels tight, streamlined and reflects the theme beautifully. Both games felt tense, coming down to game ends that could go either way. All the art is original and brings the game to life. The models are top notch and screaming to painted! I recommend this game highly to anyone who enjoys Star Wars and miniatures games.

After Imperial Assault we cracked open Mars Attacks the Miniatures Game by Mantic Games. We played the first scenario and it was so much fun!





This game is dripping with theme and random hilarity. Jon played the Martians, running 6 of them with Disintegrator Rifles. I played the humans with 6 troopers with carbines and 2 LMG's. The rules are elegant with a mix of board game mechanics with miniature wargame style mechanics. The most obvious miniatures mechanic is true line of sight. If you take a model's eye view and you can see an enemy model, you can shoot it! The brilliance of this system is that it simplifies movement and range by distilling it down to 3" squares, while still maintaining the importance of where you place the model inside the square. The game feels very tactical with a very simple dice pool system to determine the effects of cover etc. On top of all of this is a fun card system that adds wildly chaotic events to the game that exemplify the realities of battle in the midst of an alien invasion. Events are as diverse mutant bugs flying off with your LMG to civilians running randomly into the Frey. The most iconic event is of course, the flaming cattle tearing trough the street trampling all in their way! The game finely balances the thin line between a lighthearted Martian B movie romp, with a gratifying tactical shooter. This has been one of my favourite games of the year! I look forward to playing this a lot more!

A nice simple way to keep track of your team online. It saves all of your teams and tracks MC, Game Results and Experience nicely. Sadly, it doesn't allow you to keep track of injuries, points scored or to customize your team logo.

A much more extensive team manager. It gives you pretty much everything you could want in a team manager. It tracks player names, injuries, experience, points scored and upgrades. Jake Thornton (the Designer of Dreadball) has posted a site that allows players around the world to track the results of their games. This provides helpful info on how teams perform, so the more players that contribute, the more accurate the results.

A New Dreadball Pitch
I recently had the opportunity to put together a new Dreadball pitch. A friend in the Dreadball Fanatics Facebook group asked me to help him with a pitch for a tounament he's running. The desired pitch would be "futuristic" and useful as a play aid to teach the game. It should be large with areas to organized the game components. I was told that a pitch design by Robin Libbrecht would be a good starting point.

New Dreadball Pitch

It is designed to be printed at 24"x28" on a Two Player Playmat at InkedPlaymats.

In addition to using colors to indicate the various halves of the board and which player's rush it is etc, various other elements were added to help with gameplay.

Dreadball League Update Jan 2015 and Deadzone!

Our Dreadball League was rudely interrupted with the holidays, but we are back on track! We met up for our 4rth league night last week and there were tense games to be had! The Newmarket DirtyRats played the Ukomo Avalanchers, while the Silver Mountain Slammers faced the Hiveworld 8 Warriors.

We have also been distracted by a few other fleets of fancy! Deadzone! Geoff and I got our first two games of Deadzone in and they were a blast. Geoff played Enforcers and I played Rebs in both games. In the first game, we both drew the exact same Mission card. We both had to survive, earning points for each round that half of our force stayed alive, while also earning points for kills. So, the game felt like a bit of cat and mouse as the Enforcers have higher firepower and armour. So, the Rebs basically hid and took pot shots here and there while slowly being mowed down. It was still a close game with the Enforcers finally winning with 10 points to the Rebs' 7 points.











The second game we played gave the Enforcers a kill order mission while the Rebs were given a Scour mission. This played heavily in the Enforcers' favour as my Rebs strike team was not built for a scour mission. I struggled to move equipment off the board, but eventually ran out of troops to effectively earn enough VP to win, so the Enforcers took home another victory with 10 points to the Rebs' 6. It was still a blast, but I look forward to beginning a league. In a league you will be able to draw a Mission card and THEN build your force for the mission you drew. I suspect the Scour missions will be more possible when a strike team has been built specifically for it. It is a challenge to pull off!

Then finally, I got in a Mars Attacks game. This game is awesome! It is dripping with theme, light, but feels very tactical and realistic. I played the first scenario, which felt very balanced with the humans being in the lead until civilians started emerging from the buildings, giving the Martians the opportunity to capture them and take the lead to win the game. While it has some more random elements and chaotic elements than Deadzone, the fun factor is high and I look forward to playing a lot more of this game!

Dreadball Vassal Online - Overhaul with Dreadball XTREME

After much playtesting, I have overhauled the Dreadball Vassal Module to be more reminiscent of a real life tabletop experience. The new module allows players to manipulate dice on the tabletop as you would in real life. The boards all sit on a virtual tabletop and you can move tokens and pieces around the board and tabletop as you would in real life.



Many of the custom pitches have matching tokens populated when you choose them.

Further to this, I have added Dreadball XTREME Beta to the module so that players can begin playing XTREME while they wait for their models

    Over the Holidays, with the help of many great artists and painters, I have developed a Dreadball Vassal Module. So we can all play Dreadball online! Mantic has given me permission to share the Dreadball Vassal Module I have developed. Please keep in mind that it is a work in progress.

    When you open the Vassal Module, click the help menu at the top and select Quick Start. That will explain all the controls I have built in. You can also right click on the models/cards/tokens and it will give you a menu of options for what you can do.
