My week in gaming...
Arkham Horror has seen the table a couple of times this week, Quachil Uttaus attacked last Thursday Night, finding our party of Patricia (Kelifer), Roland (Me: Devoured), Rita Young (Me) & Trish (EmmaJane) to be too strong as he was sealed away (OK, he was 1 turn of a card away from waking and consuming us all, but in Arkham a marginal victory is a massive victory). Kelifer and I had rather less success against Nyarlothotep and his Dark Pharaoh herald.
Elder Sign is still a favourite having seen the table a few times, most notably when my ‘not geeky enough for BGG’ friend Daniel showed up on Friday. I tell you what, that FFG Video is awesome for saving time on rules explaining. As far as I know, Daniel has never lost his first game of anything, and Friday was no different, good job we were on his side this time! Yig was finally sent packing by a successful visit to R’lyeh. I know ES can throw up a few easy wins, but it’s still fun to play and throws up just as many hard fought wins and a fair few losses. Monday night saw a last dice victory for Kelifer and me against a very much awake Cthulhu.
Saturday night was fun. The ladies were having a ‘girls only night’. Darren, an enthusiastic newbie to the hobby came over. He’s a map geek. So I intruded him to the Ticket to Ride series with a game of Ticket to Ride: Europe, Carcassonne (via the travel edition) and finally (quite bazarrely) Early American Chrononauts. As if anyone was keeping score, I won TTR by 10 points (we shared longest route), he won Carc by a mile (damn, he caught on to farming strategy quick!), and EAC, also him. I was attempting to patch my way to a 10 card hand and patched him to an ID victory. Must get him into a FLGS sometime soon. And get him off that god awful cider stuff.
Games Club Cannock is mainly RPG oriented club that meets each Sunday evening just up the road from me. I’ve been trying to get them boardgaming for years with only limited success. This week was the last in a 5 week block of Traveller (Classic). A new game for me, but an old game by all accounts. Character creation was a blast, it could be made into a game in it’s own right. It’s certainly the only game I know of where you can actually DIE during Character creation. I’m on my 3rd character. My first, a Vargr called Fugh (rolled randomly, honest) died horribly in an explosion during session 2, my second didn’t die so much as get locked away for 15 year for murder, that was in session 3, my 3rd character, ‘Marshall’ has now survived 2 complete sessions (but has just docked his employers ship at a naval base, with a corpse in the cargo hold and the bright red contents of his attaché case’s security system all over the air raft hold, so, business as usual then!)
The Tuesday night group meets at the home of Tom and Elly (velvetfeet). It’s a like a side project from Games Club Cannock. This week saw the opening session of Colin’s RuneQuest campaign, which sees Tom and Myself taking up the roles of brothers. Troll brothers. Elly and Gez are a pair of ducks and Tiddy, although absent this week, will be the only human in the party. Session 1, then, saw us arrive at the city. After a short fracas with a bunch of local miscreants, we all ended up in the local jail awaiting trial the following morning. That’s as far as we got.
Other Gaming Related Musings...
I’m a big fan of Flying Frog Productions games. I've just decided that I want Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game. Real expensive though. Just hope it’s worth it.
Still want to get hold of Arkham Horror: Miskatonic Horror Expansion to complete my Arkham setup.
Looking forward to MoM’s first real expansion and getting the second POD one from the BoardGameGuru, when he gets it.
Listened to the Dice Hate Me podcast, because of the Richard Launius interview (to be fair, I’d never heard of it before it was posted in the ES forums). Highly enjoyable. Cheers guys. Got me interested in Defenders of the Realm (had heard of it, but knew nothing about it). It just went on my wishlist somewhere near the top. Talking of new Launius games, Run, Fight, or Die! looks interesting from LNLP. I’d P500 it, but the UK shipping is so much that it’ll almost certainly be cheaper to wait for the Guru to have it in stock and get it from him. Same goes for Zombie War.
Off Topic Musings...
Machine Head’s new album, ‘Unto The Locust’ is out, and after 3 or 4 listens, I’m still undecided. It certainly has some excellent moments; ‘Locust’, the pre-release single, is one of the best tracks I’ve heard for a long time.
Another thing that has been on the table a lot this week has been my latest batch of homebrew. Very tasty. If anyone wants to emulate it, it’s Woodford’s Nelson’s Revenge. The Halloween brew is now in the barrel. Hope it’s ready in time! The other beer worthy of note this week is Profanity Stout from Williams Brothers. It really is f*****g good stuff, quite strong though, a bit like the language if forces from you when you first taste it!

After massively enjoying Dominion, I had looked at this as a potential purchase with the £'s that Santa gave me, but thought I'd give Ascension a try instead as it looked sufficiently different to Dominion to give a completely different experience. We really enjoyed that too. But I still held a desire to own this one day. And that day came last weekend. Pre-sleeved too .
After one play, I'm convinced we'll enjoy this more given repeated plays. The Light / Darkness rules are somewhat intrusive, but I'm sure well get them down after a couple more plays. Until we have to introduce new players to it that is :/
I'd picked this in my wants lists purely as speculation, not expecting to get hold of it. But hey, sometimes you get lucky! We've played two games of this so far:
X-Men vs Marvel Knights - Born Again Scenario
My X-Men took an early lead going after some of the bigger hitting headlines. Kel's Knights remained just in my shadow for the rest of the game until the final round. My lead putting me up against Magneto in each headline eventually took it's toll and he got all his Master Plans into play on the turn I made 15 points, wounding the mighty Wolverine in the process. The 5 point hit took me behind the Knights who went on to win 16-13.
Avengers vs Fantastic 4 - Born Again Scenario
A closer game throughout. F4 made the early push, going for a Threat 3 Mastermind headline first off with Sue and Torch Ready and Thing in support, hoping that Kel's success with Master Plans in the first game would tempt into it this one. It did and Doom went down, giving the F4 their Temporary Recruit Power-Up. In the second round, F4 stayed fairly low-key, allowing the Avengers to creep marginally ahead in the VP stakes. Third turn was the last. A Mastermind headline each (F4 through choice, Avengers through VP lead) left Doom with a headache, F4 with an Improved Lab, Avengers lying wounded thanks to Juggernaut's intervention. After the dust settled, F4 won 16-15.
Really enjoying this much maligned game, although many thanks must go to Universal Head for his superb summary, which makes learning the rules SO much easier.

Wow. Busy week, and next to none of it gaming!
Sunday night - Games Club Cannock
We played the second session of our now occasional All Flesh Must Be Eaten campaign.
First Session Re-cap -
In an office building in Atlanta, a Courier, a Security Guard, an Office Worker and a Cleaner got stuck in a lift during a power cut. And then gunshots were heard from below us. Upon escaping the not movie-like at all lift (it didn't have roof access. It didn't plummet as we left it.) we found that everyone had, well, ceased moving.
The few remaining workers in the canteen were slumped over their late afternoon coffee or sprawled out over the tables. A few checks on these motionless lumps found them to be dead, not shot, just dead. And then they started moving. And groaning. And shambling.
Armed with kitchen knives, we made our way downstairs avoiding these, erm, zombies?!. We heard another gunshot and cautiously headed toward it. What we found were more of these, for want of a better word, zombies. These were feisty and we had to fight our way through them, but they went down easy enough.
Once through, we found a balaclava'd dude dressed in biker leathers, using an overturned table as cover, stood shaking with a gun in his hand. As we approached him, we saw the body of what we assumed was his friend, thanks to the similar attire. He too had a gun in his hand, but he also had a hole under his chin, and the top of his head dripped from the ceiling.
After witnessing the dead walking and the gruesome suicide of his fellow biker, the dude wasn't exactly coherent, but we discover that he and his gang were turning the place over when all this kicked off. They had a van in the basement car park. We headed down to it, avoiding the living dead as we went.
While 2 of us lifted the closed roller shutter doors to get the van out, the others fended off the oncoming wave of shambling assailants and we barely made it out into the dying light of the early evening.
Fade to white.

As our eyes adjusted to the light, bright compared to the dingy car park, the horror of our situation became all too obvious. Cars, vans, trucks, buses, a few hours ago congestion on the busy city streets, now litter in an urban waste. Alarms sounded, car stereos blared out white noise. not a single vehicle moved. Some of them had mounted the pavements before coming to rest against buildings or lampposts, some had continued in to the back of other vehicles, some sat undamaged, as if waiting for the lights to change. The lights were out. Traffic signals, street lights, crossing lights, all out. People shambled along the pavements and between wrecked cards. But the shambling people weren't people. They were shells of people. And they were moving towards us.
There was no hope of getting the van onto the road, so we mounted the pavement and headed towards the only place you can go when the world is ending. The Mall.
Within sight of the mall, the road became blocked. From here on, we were on foot. By now the sun had set and the city was eerie in it's silent darkness. The sky above us was blacker than usual, light pollution now reduced to the occasional orange glow of fires that raged around the city.
We picked our way across the wreck strewn road and across the and then the mall car park. These things trapped in cars because their seatbelts restrained them there. Others tried to moved to us, but we moved quickly. Those that we came across were easily avoided as they swung almost aimlessly with their flailing limbs.
Deciding to take the stealthy approach, we broke into the loading area behind the mall. After a highly tense few minutes, we located the noise that was disturbing us to a stack of crates behind a truck. Approaching carefully, ready to attack, we found a whimpering dog. Our traumatised biker gang 'friend', managed to calm the poor animal down and it happily joined us.
Heading into the mall on the second floor, we found the undead to be fairly thin on the ground. A glance over the balcony revealed a different story on the ground though. We would avoid going down there at all costs!
On our floor, without to much fuss we managed to find a map and a sport store. Most of us took on a change of clothes here. The security guard, feeling a small pang of guilt thanks to his past on the force, helped himself to some football 'armour' and our office worker a Baseball bat. My Cleaner was just happy to take on a clean track suit. Taking on much needed energy and liquid from the sports bars and drinks we found, we decided to hunker down for the night, barricading ourselves in the back room of the sports store.
According to our map, the most useful stores to us in our predicament were, predictably, downstairs. So, stocking up our brand new back packs with energy bars and sports drink, we headed out the fire escape and prepared to enter on the ground floor. Our target stores being the Camping and Outdoor store and the Gun store.
Entering on the ground floor, quietly and slowly, we were confronted a veritable swarm. Hundreds of z's. There was no way through. Handing his pack to the ex cop, the Cleaner made a run for it. Not for the stores, but for the escalator. Making as much noise as possible, he ran, dodging z's when the swung and knocking them out of the way when they got in it. Somehow unscathed, he arrived at the top of the escalator, on the landing outside the sport store where they had spend the night. Looking down, he saw he had achieved what he had intended. His fellow survivors had made their way to the outdoor store. The undesired yet necessary side effect was that every z in the mall was making it's way towards him. They gathered around the bottom of the escalators and filed up them. The cleaner waited for one to reach the top and planted a kick square in it's chest. The sheer mass of zombie on the escalator prevented the desired domino effect though and the monster was returned to it's feet. Running back to the sports store, the Cleaner started retraced his steps back to the ground floor.
Meanwhile, the rest of the party had stocked up in Camping & Outdoor, bigger knives, bigger backpacks and survival gear. However, a lot of the shelves had been cleared. There must be other survivors out there! The gun shop was next on the hit list and although the distraction had almost lost it's effect, we got to it easily and, after selecting weapons located the necessary ammo and took all we could carry.
Our Cleaner finally made it to the outdoor store and upgraded his kitchen knives to large hunting knives, pocketed a Leatherman and fought his way along the edge of the regrouping throng of zombies. Noticing a book store, he dived in, and much to his surprise found exactly what he wanted on the counter near the door. A map of Atlanta would help them plan their next move. Out among the undead again, he made the gun store just in time to catch the party leaving.
Taking his pack, and his shotgun, the Cleaner, the Security Guard, The Office Worker, the Courier and the Biker headed for the glass front of the mall and smashing a window, made their escape.

and I played a few short games tonight.
2 games of Dominion. Random selections from all expansions both times. We use the 'deal 8 and find 2 more Alchemy cards if any came out, non Alchemy if non came out' method recommended by DXV and for the Prosperity extras, I roll a d6, if I roll equal to or less than the number of Prosperity cards in the setup, we use the Colony and Platinum cards. The first game had no alchemy, but we had the Prosperity cards in play. I won quite emphatically. In the second game, both Alchemy and Prosperity were used. Kel wiped the floor with me 86 to 34. Watchtower and Mint made their debuts, both very strong cards.
Kel gave up and returned to Facebook. I decided to take on the Genestealers in a solo game of Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game. A game fraught with danger, I lost the yellow team early on but fought on to the Launch Control Room and the prospect of getting the hell out of there. With 2 tokens on the launch control card, 2 surviving Marines, 1 Support Token available and 5 Genestealers surrounding me I activated the Control Panel, rolled a 2 and achieved my first victory! Very satisfying!
So, this is new for me. I've never blogged anything before so I figured I'd give it a whirl. Who knows, maybe I'll stick at it
I'm 35 and primarily a boardgamer, but I also roleplay. I've only been roleplaying for a few years though, and apparently that makes me a roleplaya, a johnny come lately, the only guy in the party that doesn't have to pretend to be ignorant of what it is exactly that's pulling his arms out of their sockets.
Wednesday night is Roleplay Night at Tom & Elly's. Usually accompanied by Elly's fabulous baking.
Thursdays have recently become Boardgame Night at our house.
Sunday. Games Club Cannock. Mostly Roleplaying with occasional boardgaming.
Most of the 'regulars' in these groups live in Hednesford. It's a
small tiny town near the small town of Cannock in Staffordshire, England. I have been pestering all of them to make BGG accounts for ages. Some of them have, and have joined the Hednesford Gamers BGG Guild.
If I'm any good at this Globbing lark, you'll get to know who does what, where and when. But only if you read it. You will read it, won't you?
