After I get back from GOF, I need to sort through my hundreds of photos, edit and upload the ones that turned out. Meanwhile, however, here are a few that I took from the Looping Louie Tournament:

Goodie bags were waiting for attendees of Alan Moon's Gathering Of Friends when they arrived:

Someone (to GOF attendees: anyone know more info?) generously piled some game bits on a table in the main gaming room and told attendees to help themselves:

My friends Cédrick and Murielle brought me chocolate and other goodies from Belgium for my birthday, yummmmm:

Cédrick and Murielle at the Hard Rock Café near the GOF hotel:

Cédrick is a publisher from Repos Production; Jeff and I met him in line for the very first iPad a few Gatherings ago.

Can't believe there are only three days left in the event. 10 days goes by waaaay too fast...

Played a prototype this morning with the CUTEST GAME COMPONENTS EVER.

Created by Kris Gould, Echidna Traffic Jam may LOOK like a sweet and nurturing party game, but there are plenty of opportunities for sliming fellow players (I'm especially looking at YOU, Eric Burgess and Jason Henke!! )

Easy to learn, short, fun, and waaaaaaay adorable.

Played Trajan for the first time today and really enjoyed it; I'm hoping to play it again very soon to help all the rules sink in.

This afternoon, I played Kingdom Builder with Murielle, Cédrick and Stefan. Murielle and Cédrick are from Belgium (Repos Production) and Stefan is from Montreal (Asmodee).

Although fluent in English, all three speak French back home. Since they were clearly just speaking English for my benefit, I suggested we have a French game, and that I would try to keep up with my limited French.

Very early on, however, it became obvious that my French was way too limited so we ended up using both languages. I also learned some useful French phrases during the game, like "mon tour" = "my turn" and "attends" (sp?) = "wait".

But overall, I couldn't help but think how very cool it was that there were so many languages being spoken at this event (including French, German and Czech and of course English...anyone know of others?), and that all of these people had traveled here because of board gaming.

Anyway, here are our final Kingdom Builder scores: Stefan pulled ahead while Murielle, Cédrick and I all tied:

Burgundy and thoughts on lighter vs. heavier games

One of the things I love about board gaming events like BGG.con and GOF is that I can almost always find gaming friends to hang out with the morning. As I've mentioned before, I'm NOT a night person so miss out on most evening gaming.

This morning, I wandered down to the restaurant and joined Maryl, Nick and Leo for breakfast, and then we decided to play The Castles of Burgundy.

The others had all played before -- thanks for their patience and help as I played for the first time!

The more games I play, the more I learn about my own board gaming preferences. In the beginning, I sort of assumed I should stick to the lighter party games since the heavier games were probably not my cup of tea.

What I'm finding: that I enjoy both, but it depends on my mood and especially the time of day. I like party games as an easy way of getting to know people, breaking the ice, later in the day or evening, or when I've just played a heavier game and need a break. But...

I know some of you wouldn't consider Burgundy a particularly heavy game, but I find I love games like this that are so entirely engrossing that the rest of the room disappears; you're only aware of the game and the others playing the game. I love the "aha" feeling as an initially somewhat overwhelming list of game rules gradually coalesces into at least initial understanding.

But again, I find this partly depends on the other players and also whether I understand the game well enough to become absorbed in gameplay. Thanks so much to Maryl, Nick and Leo for helping me learn the game and for offering me guidance along the way.

Yay, got to play both new Dixit games this afternoon!

Dixit: Journey is basically the same game as the original Dixit, but with brand new art and an improved scoreboard:

In addition to clear instructions to make it easier for those found scoring confusing before, the board also comes with a numbered guide for placing player cards for voting.

Again, thanks to Joel Gagnon from Asmodee for teaching the game:

The artist is Xavier Collette - GORGEOUS work. Here's a sample:

My fellow players: Donna Balkan, Carlos Hernandez, Pierre Poissant-Marquis (also from Asmodee) and Joel. Carlos had to leave at this point, but the rest of us went on to play Dixit Jinx.

It's a shorter and more intense version of Dixit -- fun, but I still prefer the original. Those who find the original Dixit too slow-paced, however, should definitely check it out. I can also see this as a good travel game (takes up less room than the original Dixit).

Games discussed above:

with his book, A SONG IN STONE, which is also available in ebook format. Walter was kind enough to sell me an autographed copy of his book at GOF.

Amused by Josh Adelson's comment on Facebook when I posted this photo and said that I love running into gamers who are also writers:

"I love beating their asses black and blue in games because they're too busy promoting their book in the middle of a game to pay any attention to what their opponents are doing. Well, I would love it, had it ever happened."

:-D

I should point out that I ASKED Walter to pose with his book, after buying a copy.
