Lunchtime Gaming

Inspired by the Gaming At Work blog, I thought I'd do another blog about the same topic because the games we've been playing are almost completely different.

A quick word about what we've played (or tried to play) at work

As of today, here's the status of a variety of games for our at work gaming group:

Category A - Lots of people know the game well
Bang!
Small World
Cosmic Encounter
Dominion

Category B - Some people know the game well
Forbidden Island
Pandemic

Category C - It has made it to the table once or twice
Adventurers, The
Alhambra
Castle Ravenloft
Give Me The Brain
Memoir '44
San Juan
Stone Age
Thunderstone
Tobago
Abandon Ship
Save Doctor Lucky

Because we've had as many as nine people show up and the participants change from day to day, several of these have only been seen or played by certain members and not by others. However, I think we've reached a point where we could seriously consider expanding (the topic of my very next blog post). I say that because the top four games are known by everyone in the group or nearly everyone to the point where they could easily teach it to someone else if we should invite a bunch more people.

Since we have two copies in the group of all the Category A games, we could easily handle a four or five times growth in number of members without having problems with either teachers or games available to play.

I have my own office at work and an extraordinarily cool boss. Back before my two gaming buddies left for greener pastures, I had a 20" x 48" table along one wall that was permanently set up with a game on it. We successfully played Memoir 44, Martin Wallace's Waterloo, ASLSK #1, and mostly the Combat Commander series (which fit perfectly on the table). Now that they're gone, the table is at home with CC pretty much permanently set up for solo gaming.

I think Manoeuvre would be a great lunch hour game, but unfortunately, nobody here to test it with now.

In my case, lunch is an hour long. We'd set up a game and start it, then leave it set up until the scenario was finished, then do another. We were scheduled for one lunch a week, but if we were stressed or the battle was hot, we always managed to have sack lunches so we could get extra time in.

It's good to see another lunchtime gaming blog. I notice that you have Bang! listed, have you thought about trying Shadow Hunters? I feel like it's a much better game with a very similar feel. Also, it plays a lot quicker, so you can get more plays in during a single play.

We've tried a lot of the games you have listed. I actually have been holding off on buying Cosmic Encounter for a while due to the length of the game. How do you fit it in? Do you play the shortened version to fit it in?

I'll be watching your blog, hopefully it will give us some new suggestions as well.

We've recently started this at work as well. It's nice to see others doing this. Our lunch gaming started with Cave Troll and recently we've worked in a couple games of Forbidden Island. Good fun!
