I like BGG rating system. There's a bit of ambiguity in how people interpret the different values (e.g. the definition of "Always want to play it") but it all averages out. I particularly appreciate that it allows for a mix of objective and subjective judgement; an innovative game with great mechanics and slick interface can still suck if you're not feeling the theme, or playing with the wrong crowd, and the system accounts for it.

I tend to rate games rather close to their average (obviously there are exceptions), which means my opinions on things are probably more important than yours. Ratings-wise, my largest disparities compared to the BGG average fall mostly on the "overrated" end of the scale. When my opinion is biased, I am happy to acknowledge it; however, I promise my criticisms will always be mostly objective and open to debate.

Therein lies the basis and background for this log. If you're incapable of separating the things you like from what is objectively good or bad, you might hate me. If you think that "good or bad" is/should be completely subjective, you're definitely going to hate me. Because let's face it, some games just suck, no matter what other people think.

I'm looking at you, Princes of Florence. Though that is a story for another day.

Lol. There is no "objective" rating of a board game. There is only the subjective and the persuasiveness of one's arguments. But it's your blog, so whatever you say. I'll be checking back here to be persuaded.

Curious why 18xx is tagged on this entry. Or is that also a story for another day?

Most of my gaming is done with games I purchase. So if I like a game enough to check into it, buy it, learn the rules, and actually get it to the table, there's a good chance I'm going to like it. Hence, most of my ratings are fairly high.

But one person's 4 can easily be another person's 10. I've seen it happen.
