Terrain Projects - Looking Back to 2009

A few years ago, my brother Josh and I got into miniature wargames. Having been big Lord of the Rings fans, naturally we gravitated towards the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game by Games Workshop. Having never played a game of this ilk, it took me a while to really gain a firm grasp on the extensive rule set and the hobby side. Also, having never played in a shop, we got into the hobby at home, playing against each other.

Then, I went to Games Day 2008 in Toronto and had my mind blown! There were hundreds of people there and I was inspired by the incredible terrain tables that were built by staff and players just for that day!

So, Josh and I decided we wanted to get into Games Day 2009 for free by building our own table. Neither of us had built anything on this scale and we had no idea what we were doing, but we figured experimentation would help us create something unique. We decided to build the Tower of Amon Sul (Weathertop) where the Nazgul faced off against Aragorn and the Hobbits.

We built the table out of plywood which we applied sand, paint and static grass to. Josh created some unique hills by heating up sintra and manipulated into raised formations using children's toys. The tower was built out of spray foam, wooden dowels, styrofoam and foam board. We then painted it with magnetic paint so that models could 'climb' up the sides of the cliffs with magnetic bases. Then we finished everything up with some lichon to add some realistic foliage.

We ended up winning Best Club Table and Best Lord of the Rings Table at Games Day 2009! This, for a couple of noobs, was pretty cool.
