What started out to be six people tonight ended up being four. But, hey, it's all good. We didn't play an average six player game nor did we split into two tables.
But, as we waited, Timm, Chris and I threw down a few hands of Sheepshead. Chris picked all three times and we ended up at all zeros. I didn't even come close to having a hand. It was the pick my hand up, look at it for perhaps a second, toss it back to the table with disgust, laugh, and then pass.
Sean arrived and we were giving the others a little more time before they arrived so we went with Monopoly Express as the little dice chuckin' filler. We went a few rounds where Chris won with 7300, Timm had 7100, Sean had 6400 and I finished with 4700. One of my favorite 10 minute fillers. Quality dice, a bowl to chuck the dice in (and make that great dice spilling sound). Good stuff.
We made some quick calls/texts and since we had four and Sean brought his deck, we busted out Tichu. It's my second time playing (I played for the first time about three or so weeks ago). Timm's first time. Chris a handful of times and Sean played a bunch. I found out the first time I played it that I liked the game, a lot. This time, I like it even more. I'm an old vet in playing trick taking games and have played more than enough climbing games to pick this up pretty quick. I know I have tweaking to do and to read my hand expertly, but I feel I'm pretty damn good at the game already and have no issues in playing anyone. It's cards! Really. Chris and I partnered against Sean and Timm. Perhaps that worked in Chris' and I favor as we are partners in Double Some'R'Set. We won 445 to -215. The bad guys had a lead but one turn when Sean called a Grand and I ended up calling a Tichu. I went out first so we went from way behind to ahead and then held on. I want to play this again, very soon.
So, after we finished it up, Sean brought over a game that I have, as well, but never played. Meuterer ended up on the table. The rules are soo tiny. It's the reason I never played this game (and I had this game for YEARS). It's a bidding/secret role selection type of game. For such a small box, there is a lot going on. I really enjoyed this one and want to get this to the table sooner than later. Anyways, Sean had one big round which pushed him to the win with 32. I had 27, Chris 19 and Timm 14. I'm glad this one made the table.
To end the night, I pulled the Puerto Rico card. It is my favorite game, so what can I say. We replaced the University with the Library and soemthing else...I don't remember. Well, we were on our way. Money seemed to be pretty healthy in the game and I pushed the end of the game by filling up my buildings. I was sitting on the last pick of the roles if I ended the game. Right before, Sean picked Builder. I wanted that as I would have, with the library, grabbed the Tobacco building for my guild hall. But since Sean took it, I coulnd't do that so I had to grab a cheap 1 building. Ug. I did have the Guild Hall and the Cloister (I went a money/building path - not nornmal for me). So, with my last pick, I took Settler hoping to snag on two sugars for the third set in my cloister (which would have given me three more points). There were three sugar waiting. Chris and Sean each took a Sugar to stop me from those points. Timm won with 47, Chris had 46, I had 44 and Sean had 42. Everyone else shipped more than me by a good margain. Tight, tight game.
