Rick recently acquired a copy of this game, a sort of El Grande meets Carcassonne. It takes too long to play a full game, but the basic game of 7 rounds looks doable once we learn how to play. So today we did that, playing 4 rounds and scoring. The game revolves around playing tiles down (with some mix of land and water) and claiming land with your caballeros, which are represented by tiles as well, with numbers on each side - and then hopefully preventing your opponents from getting in on the land. Each territory is scored by the winner and runner-up, but you can get bumped off the board if your caballeros are ever in contention for two territories. There is also fishing as a secondary scoring method.

In our intro game, we were very much feeling our way. Rick put two caballeros on the central island, with J and Tom challenging. I attempted to start my own little island but Rick pushed me off and it ended up as mostly J's little island instead. Tom secured 2nd on the central island and cornered off another land of his own. Over 4 rounds, we used up all the available ships (not sure if this was good play or not!). Rick made use of the double tile card to make a nice 2nd island for himself (with 2 gold mines on it so quite valuable!) and as a result he made the best score, with the rest of us all within a point of each other.
A nice introduction: we'll see if we can squeeze 7 turns in next time. One comment from the game: Tom asked if there were any "stitch moves" (his term for a play which messes up an opponent) to which Rick replied "This game is all stitch moves!"
