March 15th

Timm and Kevin arrived and Chris and Jeff were going to be late-ish, so we continued on with our ongoing game of three-handed Schafkopf. Of course, this is for points only, becuase if it was for money, I wouldn't do this well. We played about 10-12 hands and I increased my point total from +19 to +43. I didn't lose a hand. I'm getting good hands or I have been an excellent partner. When you are doing well, you play looser and can take some good chances. When you are struggling, it seems like you will press the issue, pick when you necessarily shouldn't (because it's the best hand you had seen) and take some risks you probably shouldn't. I'm dying to play some five-handed. It's been a long time and it's the best version of the game.

Jeff was next to arrive and we were expecting Chris at anytime by then, so we broke out and played a game of Crokinole. It was Timm and I versus Kevin and Jeff. Timm and I are getting into the tournment in St. Louis in May at the Geekway to the West convention. Need practice as partners. We ecked out a win after Chris arrived.

On a side note, if you are thinking of getting a board, I suggest avoiding MayDay boards at all costs. There are a number of threads concerning their boards and business practice and I'm appalled. Avoid Avoid Avoid! Read the threads!

Back to games. Chris arrived and Jeff suggested breaking out Shogun again. It is definatly sooner than later. So, we did. We gave Chris the rundown and went with the beginner setup for this game. Even with the fifth person and taking time in the beginning to teach him the game, it went about 2.5 hours. Which is definately a good amount of time with this game. We also made certain we had our rules straight as we got a couple wrong the last time.

After the first year, Kevin had jumped out to a fairly decent lead. I was second after scoring well on buildings and castles. Jeff wasn't far behind in third with Timm trailing him by a bit in fourth. Chris was a bit behind in fifth. The second year lead to a lot of battles for castles/temples. I was decimated by the end of the game with seven TOTAL armies left on the board. Chris and Timm were beating the hell out of each other and Jeff and Kevin were really chewing up area and consistently building. In the end, it was Kevin who won with 59. Jeff had 50. I managed to have 33 along with Timm and Chris but because I lost another territory that did not allow me to reinforce, I had the most chests left out of the three of us in the back, so I claim 3rd!
