Almost forgot to post this today, maths work and Dominant Species arriving today have been a little distracting. Really hoping to get that played, I've heard loads of good things about it.
So, what happened on Monday?
With 6 of us there, we thought we'd have a go at 7 Wonders, then a 7th person turned up, so we played 7 Wonders with 7 wonders (a shocking event to all involved). This is one of it's strengths, it can play 7, and due to only really interacting with the adjacent players and everyone playing simultaneously, extra players don't slow the game down.
After this, we split up into a 3 and a 4, and I gave Black Friday a second chance. Wow, this is good with the actual rules. There was a rise in prices which would have started to drop had the game not ended when it did with everyone selling and buying silver before the big crash, I lost by 1 silver, and I'm glad I gave this game a second chance.
After this, we had another Friese game: Fürstenfeld with the different breweries having different demands, the economies the players have develop quite differently, I think this game probably would work better with more players (though take that with a pinch of salt, as I've only played it twice - both with only 3).
Then we had a return to 7 Wonders - 2 more game. This is another strength this game has, replayability, it's possible to play several games in a row due to the variety of wonders and their respective powers.
So, I gave Black Friday a second chance, but do all games deserve a second chance? I'm not just talking about games where you've gotten the rules wrong somewhere along the line (as you were playing a different game, but just happened to be using the pieces) but any old game. If you enjoy a game, then a second game gives it a chance to solidify that position, whilst also allowing you to see if the game is really something you'd keep going back to rather than just a lucky one-off game that hit it right for you.
However, what about games that don't leave a good impression on their first tryout? Do they deserve a second chance? What do you think?
