I have enjoyed B-17 very much, but don't feel the player has a ton of choices--it's mainly about dodging flak and getting shot at.
Raid on St Nazaire is and was also a great game--I played it a lot, quite interesting system. But once again, it was mainly about getting shot at, and I got tired of my ships getting sunk before I could even land, without being able to do anything about it.
Both games definitely historically accurate, but as games...not so enjoyable for me. In Ambush I feel like I have a lot more control over my fate, and can react to events (within the limits of PC and IN).
Haven't played Patton's Best yet--I bought a copy used last year and haven't had the energy to try and absorb the rules (as I get older I'm less and less willing to dive in the way I used to).
The last game I tried it for was, realistically, Fields of Fire--and I'm still in therapy! I know there's been at least one unofficial rules re-write, but in terms of rules-learning-to-game-playing ratio, I just couldn't muster the enthusiasm.
Patton's best wasn't very good ie. the Sherman M-4. This game was frustrating because of that ugly fact.Thin skined and tended to "brew up", it was fast, small, light, reliable and easy to service. Those advantages didn't matter in that game.
I think Raid on Nazaire was the best of the lot. It was a really good story that unwinds as you play it. You hope your individual teams survive and you get pretty attached to them as the game goes on.

I agree I bought it when it first came out and I've always wished game play had been from the perspective of the German. The different tanks available as the years went on would have been very interesting. Moving from small light and fast to the medium IV and then onto the Panther and Tiger and then the King Tiger. I always envisioned waves of T-34's heading my way and just picking them off as I fell back. Not to be...
