• Shadow Era updated 1.24 - Mar 24
We didn't make a big deal out of this collectible trading card game that uses a freemium business model, but it certainly was a big deal in iOS gaming circles. Personally, I don't really like TCGs, for a number of reasons. The biggest is the entry barrier to casual play and enjoyment. Unlike a board game, you don't just flip open the box, teach your friends and start playing.

That barrier, however, is usually not a problem for those who like TCGs because such games seem to just come with communities built around playing them. Well, it's no different for Shadow Era. It's quite a well done concept and game, despite the fact that it launched on Feb 23 without a full complement of cards that all worked together. Still, it was pretty and some sets of cards DID work. Now, it has received its highly anticipated update. Here's what's included:

Wulven Game Studios wrote:
The first full-scale TCG for iOS gets even better with this massive update! Here's what's new:
- 23 new cards, introducing Hero Armor and Weapons
- offline play mode
- added support for iPhone 3g and iPod Touch 2g devices
- built-in help system
- multiplayer changes to penalize quitters
- plus many many more changes, improvements, and bugfixes! See shadowera.com for full details

• Ghost Stories for iPad - Mar 24
Yes, that overexposed hairy hand is pointing to what appears to be Ghost Stories for the iPad. The app is being published by Repos Production, will be in French and will be available in two to three weeks (which would be middle of April from the article date). Here is a fun taste of a clip from a Google Translation of the original article posted in German:

Google Translation of de.trictrac.net wrote:
As we can clearly see the Ghost Stories can play on the iPad either solitary or with up to four real people. The players panels can be moved so that all may well sit around the plate and have their color in front of you. Also, they can turn to for the various special forces. Even the village can be rebuilt as you like with a finger rub - all very nicely animated. For example, moving the character of the active player.

• Reiner Knizia's Ra Updated
Codito Development has updated it's troubled app, Reiner Knizia's Ra to version 1.4. Don't get me wrong. I think it is a very good app. There has just been a rocky user reception to the online multiplayer feature that utilizes OpenFeint. This update claims to address some of those issues:

Codito wrote:
What's new

Improvements:
- restored support for iOS 3.1.3
- fixed problem with unlocking "Games Won" and "Games Played" achievements
- fixed problem of main menu not responding after viewing "Options"
- various crash fixes

Online multiplayer improvements:
- fixed games getting out of synch
- fixed "Next Game" not detecting a waiting game properly
- "Resign" properly signals other player that game has ended
- improved game status display
- improved app icon "badge" display of number of games waiting
- allowed games to be viewed even if it's not your turn

• Outsmart Price Dropped to Free - Mar 28
Outsmart is a slick looking little Universal app that plays kind of like Tic Tac Toe with 16 squares instead of 9. Only your Xs and Os are numbered from 1 to 8 and you can score their sum if you can lay them down in lines of 3. Are you confused? Well don't be, just download it because it was made free on Monday.

• Viking Lords Reviewed on TUAW - Mar 29
Fellow BGGer and prolific reviewer, Sebastian Blanco, has reviewed Viking Lords over at The Unofficial Apple Weblog. This is one of my favorite iPad games. Sebastian seems to like it well enough, but in the end he recommends not buying it because the developers seem to have blatantly ripped the C&C game mechanics straight from BattleLore.

We've covered this area before. Unless a designer or publisher patents a mechanic, they don't own it. A developer cannot rip what is not owned. And just to drive the nail in the coffin on this one, the developer posted the final word on this in a TouchArcade post:

Johannes / Puffin Software wrote:
we have been in contact with Fantasy Flight Games and Apple about this a while back and we consider the issue settled. There is no infringement of FFG:s intellectual property rights here.

• Sixx, Dungeons & Dice added to iPad Multiplayer List - Mar 29
Yes, I am plugging my own GeekList, but that's because I put a lot of work into it and want you to be aware of multiplayer games on the iPad that are available now.

Sixx, a Qwirkle clone Dungeons & Dice, a Talisman clone

• And This Just In...Tactical Soldier, Undead Rising Released! - Mar 29
Tactical Soldier, Undead Rising was released on Tuesday night. It is a quality effort by self described "indie" developer Full Control ApS. I include it here because I have been tracking it ever since the developer dropped in on BGG last year to tell people about it. It's born digital, but being a turn-based strategy game with an action point mechanism, it definitely has board game appeal. I am wondering if people agree that it's relevant to board games and would like to see a review? (Full disclosure: I was given a free promo code.)

It's pretty straightforward. Your character moves, fights, shoots, and takes various actions on a grid of squares that is different for each goal-oriented scenario. He even joins up with other characters and becomes, and then moves, as a squad to shoot and kill hordes of zombies. So far I am superficially reminded of board games like Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game, Space Hulk, and even the basic combat aspects of Dungeons & Dragons (4th Edition). It is not multiplayer, but I'm having still having a lot of fun with it.

Unfortunately, that is for the lawyers to decide. While I agree with your assessment in theory, FFG can always threaten legal action and it's entirely possible that it may get removed, even if there's no actual infringement! (Other apps/games have been taken down for less.) The longer it goes without action, the less likely that becomes, though.

It's your blog, but I am happy you included it. I would prefer you included other games like it.

It could be a board game. Like Panzer General: Allied Assault was an XBOX Live Arcade game before it was a board game.

I also look forward to the blog.

Shadow Era is a good game. As is Viking Lords.

I would like to see a review of TS. For all we know, maybe someone will make an actual board game out of it.

If you like Tactical Soldier, check out Hunters: Episode One HD. It is a nice turn based game that reminded me of Space Hulk.

Nice update. Thanks. I give a thumbs up to Viking Lords as well. It may have taken from the Battlelore mechanics but it is well done. Even has good voice acting.

I am going to check out tactical solder right now...Thanks again and keep it coming.

I just got a ipod touch this past December and have been immensly enjoying all of the board game apps that I have discovered through this blog and others on BGG. However, the one thing that saddens me is these iPad exclusive titles (ghost stories, viking lords to name a few). I totally understand why they go that route as the games may require more screen real estate that the smaller devices can't offer. But it just makes me want an iPad now so that I can play those games. $500 probably isn't a good investment just to play games though....or is it?

I LOVE my Ipad. I play board games on it, watch movies from my netflix account, listen to music, read books (full screen which is nice) and even do presentations for work from it.

I am on it every single day of the week at some point. I take it wherever I go where I might have to wait so that I have something worthwhile to do like play a game of Smallworld or Catan or even a little Zombie Dice and it looks like this year is the year for IPad board game apps.

If you can afford it I highly recommend it. Also, if you can get one with more storafe. I have the 64Gb Ipad 1.

I'd love to see that review, and more. But on the "it's not a board game" issue, I think there are a lot of non-board games out there that will appeal to board gamers. For instance, Age of Booty for 360 and PS3 aren't board games, but they are in the same ilk. I could easily see them adapted to a board game. So any iOS game like that would make a great review.

Like the above poster, I definitely get my money worth from my iPad. Between games, real web browsing on the go, ebooks, and more...I'm constantly using that guy. It's completely replaced my netbook, I'm playing more games than ever, reading more books than ever, and I was even able to watch some college basketball that I would have otherwise missed the first weekend of the tourney. It's a great device if you can find even several little things to do. As far as JUST games? I don't know that it would be worth it, but worth is up to the eyes of the beholder.

Fair warning: Shadow Era is a bug-ridden disaster.

Of the 150-page Touch Arcade thread devoted to the game, about 125 pages are bug reports, complaints, and questions that could have been answered had even a basic tutorial been included.

And online multiplayer — which appears to be a big point of emphasis for this blog — pretty much doesn't work.

Judge for yourselves.

Fair warning indeed. I based my simple assessment as "well done" on several games played under two different accounts. My first account was a hunter and it took a little bit to figure out that the hunters were gimped from the get go. I even bought a couple of booster packs to try and fix him before I figured it out. Boo.

Then I created another account and started off with a mage (or whatever you call the magic-users). Played a couple of online games and kicked some ass. Never had a problem, though I suspected some things may have been fishy at times. Overall, though I didn't experience any critical-, blocker-bugs or crashes.

Clearly, from that TouchArcade thread there are problems. I would imagine that a game like this has some pretty intricate interactions that no doubt could cause problems. Is that kind of thing the main gist of the problems?

I've sort of casually been following SE's development (I'm not a player, nor likely to ever be one), and the problems appear to fall mostly into two broad categories:

1. Cards/game effects not working at all, or resolving incorrectly;

2. Multiplayer games losing connection to the server. This appears to be happening with startling frequency.

There's been some other themes I've seen, too, although these don't appear as often:

3. The first player has a distinct advantage. I've seen claims of up to an 80- to 90-percent winning percentage for the player going first;

4. The game is a WoW CCG clone. I can't really speak to that one, having never played WoW in any form.

My overall impression is "too much, too fast." SE needs to shore up its foundation before releasing any more expansion material.

But there must be something there, as the game seems to have a solid group of hard-core players and evangelists. It appears the timing is right for a really good TCG to be released at the App Store. Whether SE will turn out to be that game ... ? I'm really not sure.

Another awesome blog update, as always. I am particularly excited about Ghost Stories, as I have always thought that would be an ideal fit on the iOS. Here's hoping they get it translated to English and available on the phones as well as the pads, but either way I will certainly pick it up.

I bought Tactical Soldier and just finished an hours worth of play.

It's an awesome game in the vein of Xcom and the old turn based strategy games. I could see this engine being used for everything from turn based war games to tactical shooters like this.

I think my only complaint so far is that you can't choose to move your whole squadron at once, which makes it a little cumbersome, but it still is a very awesome game. Nothing like shooting 3 zombies with a shotgun!

And kind of annoying really. There's no real reason why the game shouldn't be able to let me move Ray before Jack or vice versa. If I could, then the strategy would be even richer as I would be more inclined to separate them across larger distances.

Glad to hear it!

Our own personal Top games list? Hmmm. Mine would probably be embarrassingly short. I've bought and have tons of them loaded on my iPad and iPhone. Many of them have been played just once or twice. I always seem to go back however to the ones that have async multiplayer. And I don't even really mess much with free versions of apps when there is fully functional paid version. I guess I might recognize the value in such an exercise.

Thanks for the kind words in relation to BGG news. I tend to think of us a niche/niche/niche. iOS board games are a niche within iOS game which is a niche in iOS apps. Or iOS board games are niche within hobby board games which is a niche within board games, which is a niche within games.

BGG News must be a bit broader. Not everybody cares to have iOS board game news mixed in at that top level. We do borrow freely from Eric's excellent blog and I do believe he may do the same to us from from time to time. Seems to be a good relationship to me! We can all keep informed that way.

You can move Ray before Jack. If you tap on him first then he'll become activated....

If you're posting on turn-based games with APs, you should check out Hunters: Episode One. It has an iPhone and an HD iPad version. It is basically shareware: free to play for an hour, and then $5/$8 (respectively) to unlock the full game.

So in other words, you've been making assumptions based on other player's comments for a game you don't play? If you have been following the threads you would have noticed how we are addressing these issues, but I'll summarize here for other people.

CaptainCosmic wrote:

1. Cards/game effects not working at all, or resolving incorrectly;

As you may know, a TCG is incredibly complex with many different combinations of card effects possible. We try out best but are still a small team and sometimes can not test as thoroughly as we need to. To address this we are opening a new test server with daily builds that interested players can try out the latest development version and provide immediate feedback. Right now we are focused on fixing all known bugs before implementing the planned new features.

CaptainCosmic wrote:

2. Multiplayer games losing connection to the server. This appears to be happening with startling frequency.

We have built-in connection retries and the timeout is a generous 1 minute, but in general it's up to your device and wireless carrier and out of our hands. If you play on wifi or on PC/web, you should never have a problem with this.

CaptainCosmic wrote:

3. The first player has a distinct advantage. I've seen claims of up to an 80- to 90-percent winning percentage for the player going first;

This is completely untrue, and our stats show that for all multiplayer games played, the player going first has won almost exactly 50% of the time. The first turn advantage is balanced by an extra card and extra point of shadow energy for the second player. Any high rated player will tell you that it doesn't matter if they go first or second.

CaptainCosmic wrote:

There are many many differences between Shadow Era and Wow TCG, and the weapons and armor makes SE even more distinct. Shadow Era was designed to be a more casual digital CCG with a target game time in the 5 minute range, but of course was inspired by other great CCGs such as MTG and WoW TCG.

We just announced that we have reached 500,000 players in our first month, and do have quite a large loyal fanbase. You can be sure that we'll be improving and expanding the game in the months to come.

I think the Shadow Era discussion, if there is more, should probably head over to its VGG entry. I will say I have played SE since I got my iPad 2 on the 16th. I haven't had any issues with it at all and I tend to play every day for a couple hours. I do wish the Armor/Weapons cards were not so expensive, though!

As for the blog, keep up the good work, Gabe. I do hope that the Viking Lord "issue" has finally been put to rest. Especially on BGG/VGG. I keep thinking as soon as I mark it as Owned I will get a private message about how I am stealing from Borg and FFG.

So in other words, you've been making assumptions based on other player's comments for a game you don't play?

Oh, but I have played. I was a Day One downloader and played a number of times before giving up in disgust. So, speaking of assumptions ... it looks like you've made at least one yourself.

I posted my thoughts a number of times in the central TA thread, but, of course, they were soon buried by the idiotic "plz release update nowz!!l! hurr hurr" fanboy nonsense and by the developer's snarky responses and passive-aggressive attacks on other games.** So I gave up even trying.

But I do still monitor the thread, mostly from simple curiosity. And I'm curious to see if a fun and stable TCG ever appears in the App Store. Honestly, at this moment, SE is not that game. It has far too many issues, many of them at the core level. You've got cards that just flat-out don't work. You've got even some of your most loyal players howling about often their multiplayer games end up getting disconnected.

I was attempting to generalize a 150-plus-page thread for any BGG users who don't care about or have never visited TA. However, if you'd like me to, I can point to some very specific posts about some very real problems with SE.

+++++

** Edit: I didn't look at the user name. It was the developer responding. So I should have said something like "You, Kyle, should really stop with the snarkiness and the attacks on other games. It is incredibly unprofessional and a huge disincentive to support your game."

It is the lead item in this particular blog entry. And you're saying that any discussion of it needs to go elsewhere?

That logic escapes me.

Clever.

But go ahead and enlighten us, anyway.

It's a blog about iOS games ... it's the lead item in this entry ... yet you think the discussion should take place elsewhere.

Elaborate, O Wise One.

I see no problem with having that discussion here.

If the Blog's author disagrees he has the freedom to delete any comments as he sees fit.

Before you guys get the gas cans and lighters just remember that this is a blog, which means Octavian won't be dropping by. Brad and I have the "delete" option on each and every post, as does any blogger for any blog on BGG.

As pleased as I am to see that the developer has showed up to share with us, the topic of this blog post is to highlight a few different iOS board game news bits that occured this week. Shadow Era got top spot in this post simply because it occurred earlier in our last news cycle, which is not to say that it is not an historically important game in the fledgling story of iOS board and card games. (It's also a trigger to rethink how I do it in the future and perhaps editorialize an evaluation of bigger news vs smaller news.)

I think it should suffice to say that there are many users of this game, but when something has many users it will also have loud detractors. The sound of the detractors is often noisy because the size of the overall user base amplifies their voices. CaptainCosmic has clearly made the case that there are many problems and provided a link where you can go read about them.

Though it might get sordid and possibly bait the already present developer (no doubt bringing out the popcorn bowls), I can't see that a detailed discussion of the various problems with a single game will benefit the overall point (a passing skim of various news bits) of this blog post or more generally the topic of the blog itself. If it's going to be about a single game, then the proper place is in a thread somehwhere that is dedicated to just that game.

(Edit: I stand corrected on Octavian dropping by. Just curious, Octavian, can you delete blog posts too?)

+1 to the review of Tactical Soldier.

Keep up the good work. This blog has done a good job of highlighting some very nice iPhone games that rarely get coverage on the big news sites.

As a counterpoint to the Shadow Era criticisms: I just downloaded it, for free, and played a couple of enjoyable games. The built-in tutorial was pretty good and I didn't encounter any bugs or network connectivity problems. If it turns out to be terribly unbalanced I'll wait for updates rather than demanding my zero dollars back.
