It's going to be hot this week.
The weatherman says it will reach 98 degrees this Friday, with a chance of it reaching 100. The positive out of this is I can start testing whether or not Hugo's Amazing Tape is safe for game components in extreme heat.
What is Hugo's Amazing Tape? It's a plastic tape which only sticks to itself. I've heard you can get it from yarn or sewing stores, but I bought mine from Boards and Bits. You can find a similar product at adult stores as bondage tape. It is twice as wide (2") as the tape I got from B&B and it is not as thick, so it is a little harder to take off cards and put back on them when you are done.
One of the things that makes it attractive over rubber bands is I remember reading that it will never stick to anything else and will survive high temperatures.
To test this, I am going to wrap some of my old Legend of the Five Rings cards in the tape and put them in my glove compartment and another bundle on my back seat to see how they handle the high heat over an extended period of time. The CCG cards are a good quality card without a plastic coating, so they are a good representative of board game cards and shouldn't melt in the heat (yes, cards can melt if they have a coating). Besides, the cards are just sitting in a box on my shelf.
Even if the tape causes a discoloration on the cards, I'll still use it. I just want to see how careful I have to be when transporting games in the Phoenix summer. I've seen the old plastic 3M/Avalon Hill Acquire board severely warp and rubber bands melted to cards from being left in a car in the Arizona summer. I want to know if it is safe to leave games which I've used the tape on, in the car, in the shade when it gets too hot, or if I need to lug them into the office with me on those Fridays I go gaming after work?
If I think about it, I will snap a few pictures with my phone and post them with a follow-up after the weekend and again later this summer.
Here is a review on BGG.
