As always, be careful what you read today...

• Tim Buckley, creator of the Ctrl+Alt+Del comic, has announced that attendees to Digital Overload 2011 (held May 27-29 in Baltimore, MD, USA) will be able to sign up for beta tests of the Ctrl+Alt+Del board game that he's been developing. A short description from Buckley: "It's a dungeon-crawl type game with a strong cooperative/selfish attitude to the playstyle. If you've ever played any Munchkin game, you've got an idea of the sort of mentality the game is going for." (HT: Sean Johnson)

Alderac Entertainment Group has announced Nightfall: Martial Law, the first expansion for its deck-building game Nightfall (released in March 2011). Nightfall: Martial Law, which is also a standalone game, is due out July 2011.

Martin Wallace has posted rules (PDF) for A Few Acres of Snow, due out April 2011 from his Treefrog Games.

• Final rules (PDF) for Seth Jaffee's Eminent Domain have been posted on the Tasty Minstrel Games website.

Emanuele Ornella's card game Oz is due out April 2011 from Ystari Games. French site Jeux sur un Plateau has posted details of the game beyond what's listed on the BGG game page and includes additional images.

• April Fool's Day alert: Moonster Games announced a new version of Full Métal Planète for December 2011.

• Similarly (and more obviously), Steve Jackson Games has announced Munchkin ___________, the Munchkin game with 168 blank cards that you can customize as you like. What a bargain!

• Recent game releases in the U.S. include Lords of Scotland, The Heavens of Olympus and Anima Card Game: Twilight Of The Gods.

A bit of a pity that the Ctrl-Alt-Del game is going for the "shallow gameplay through repeat jokes" approach of Munchkin. There is Munchkin Quest already, one of those is enough for me...

Wait, so is the joke here that Martin Wallace keeps making games I want that I would not even consider if anyone else made them?

You know I got really excited when I saw Full Metal Planete getting a reprint. So excited, in fact, I emailed some friends about it! Then noticed the "April Fool's Day alert",

I feel such the fool. blush

Ah, April 1st, the day you're better off avoiding the internet altogether.

Joke all you like, but there are Munchkin nerds who consider that a great idea: "I get to make the Munchkin game of my dreams! YAY!" They did this with Zombies!!!

NOTE: I just taught this to three people tonight... guys, it's a fun game. Really, it isn't Dominion, but it is entertaining for thirty minutes.

I honestly can't tell if the other three announced Munchkin games/items are a joke or not.

Yep, it would be perfect for 1000 Blank White Cards. I might even buy such a game...

True, it is absolutely a fun 30-minute game.

It's the 1+ hour sessions that make me want to tear my hair out.

Full metal planete is such a cruel joke.

The ultimate "The joke's on you" would be if it turned out to be true though.

My experience with munchkin, which dates back to the first printing, goes something like this:

1. Everyone gets screwed in monster draws in the beginning.

2. One person manages to breeze through his first few encounters and accumulate loot.

3. All the other players try to gang up on him, which leads to one of two events:

4a. He's already too far ahead, and nobody can screw him, and the game ends with one player dominating everyone else

4b. You rip him down, someone else pulls ahead, and you rip him down, taking turns until someone finally manages to claw their way to the top of the heap and nobody can screw him so he wins. Usually after about 90 minutes to 2 hours of player backstabbing.

10 years of munchkin have left me in a place where I don't want to touch the damn game any more. It's not funny, and it plays the same 90% of the time.
