When you are making terrain or scenery, it is always a good idea to keep a figure or two of the scale in which you are working nearby. This allows you to check often to ensure that buildings, vehicles, and blockades will look proper and that figures can actually fit where you want them. This also ensures that figures can see over hills or hedges and that doorways and windows look like they could actually be used.
In addition to having the figures handy when at home, it is also a good idea to carry a figure around with you when you are out and about. When I first started into 40K, I carried an unpainted plastic beakie marine around with me for about a year. After that I had a good idea of the size needed. Plus I found that, in a pinch, if I bend my pinkie, the middle joint is close to the size of a marine (being a bit over an inch long).
With starting to make scenery for my western figures, in roughly 1/32 to 1/35 scale, I've started carrying around a cowboy in my pocket. This really helps in trying to find horses and cattle - both of which can come in random scales and can often look tiny. This also comes in handy in finding wood I can use for scale log cabins.
I have a bunch of tubs of Cowboys and Indians that I picked up for $1 each so I am doing fine for figures. I've had a bit of trouble trying to find horses and cattle in this scale and haven’t been able to find any at Dollarama or Michael’s (where I had previously found a nice wagon). I finally came across some farm animal sets in BJ Super Toy Sales. I’ve been looking for 1/35 horses and cattle for the upsized RWNN . At $1.50 a bag, it was worth picking up two bags to see what was usable.
It was a good find - with 2 horses (1 foal), 3 cattle (1 calf), 3 pigs, 3 sheep (1 lamb), and a goat. 5 to 10 bags should give enough head of cattle to simulate a decent herd come to town, enough horses, and even enough sheep to make a cattle/sheep war viable.
I looked around more but was unable to find the bags for less so I went back and picked up another 5 bags. This should give me more than enough horses and enough cattle to represent a decent stampede. Plus, I’m hoping to use these figures to hone my painting skills for the regular figures.
