Holy crap. Well, I dug up my copy of Dungeon Designer... going to be spending a while re-learning the damn thing; the interface isn't exactly intuitive (probably why I shelved it in the first place).

Unfortunately, my son saw me playing around with it, and suffice to say that I'm pretty much committed to using it for the final design of the gameboard. (I had an old dungeon design on the screen and he really liked how it looked. Dammit.)

To give my sanity a boost, I dusted off a project I've been wanting to start for a while -- the Dune Express print and play game. I want to make it a fairly nice game, so I've got some wood counters on order from Spielmaterial. For the gameboard, I found a cheap travel chess set at a thrift shop that I thought would be interesting to use.

Here is the chess board before I started work on it:

You can see in the second image that there is a backgammon board on the back/inside. The board folds in half to make a box to hold all the game pieces.

Here is the Dune Express gameboard getting prepped:

The gameboard sized and cut in half -- ready for mounting to the chess board:

And here it is glued to the chess board:

Just about done... here are a couple shots after several coats of sealant/lacquer:

Pardon the masking tape around the edges; I still want to sand and apply one or two more coats.

The counters, dice, and cards will be the bulk of the work on this project. But, at least I'll have the gameboard done in another day or two!

I might have to keep an eye out for those kinds of chess boards for my PnP games.
