New Game Round-up: Cité Imported, Cities Destroyed & Many Other Non-City Games

Guillaume Besançon's Cité, which was shown at Spiel 2010 but apparently not widely available, will have a few dozen copies (with English rules) available via an online U.S. retailer, most likely before the end of April. These copies effectively serve as a test run for the game's demand in North America.

• On his blog, designer Antoine Bauza writes about Rampage, a design under progress with Ludovic Maublanc. The key attraction: You are a monster attacking a city, with skyscrapers constructed from meeple supports, and as you wreak havoc on the town and bring the buildings down, the meeples fly everywhere. Sounds realistic! French site Jeux sur un Plateau has a video demonstration of the game, listing it as a future release from Repos Production.

• French publisher Gigamic has released new French-only versions of Jacques Zeimet's Kakerlaken trio (-poker, -salat and -suppe).

On a related note, my German exchange student was astonished a few months ago when I blurted out the German word for "cockroach" during some story that she was telling. She couldn't think of the right word in English and was trying to describe the object when I interjected, "Kakerlaken?" Jaw drop. This message brought to you by the "Yes, these games really are educational, I swear" Council of Board Game Publishers.

• Hints at another title coming from Ystari Games? French site Tric Trac highlights a video with actor/director Alexander Astier in which he states that he's been working with Ystari in relation to a TV series called "Kaamelott". And yes, Ystari's Cyril Demaegd has confirmed with me that Ystari will release something tied into "Kaamelott" – no details yet as to what that might be.

• In yet another recording from the Cannes game festival, Tric Trac previews the Cranio Creations title Dungeon Fighter.

• Moonster Games reports that Gosu: Kamakor is taking longer than expected as cards are balanced and other issues are worked through, but in the meantime the publisher offers you a "making of..." video showing the graphic work done on a single card in the expansion. Bonus (or penalty): Elvis sings background.

• With Eminent Domain still a month (or two or three) from release, designer Seth Jaffee is already running through the possibilities for the game's first big expansion, dubbed Exotic.

• Designer Alan Paull's next game will likely be Origins of Civilisation, according to this blog post from Tony Boydell, Paull's partner in Surprised Stare Games.

• As Fantasy Flight Games does on many Fridays, the publisher has announced a couple of new items, starting with the third adventure pack for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, this being A Journey To Rhosgobel. The other title announced is the standalone game Deadwood from designer Loïc Lamy.

• The standard edition of the Catan Dice Game will be available in U.S. stores once again on April 21, 2011. Stefan Feld's Strasbourg has been released in Germany by Pegasus Spiele.

• New titles of interest in the BGG databse include Chad Jensen's Dominant Species: The Card Game (which just launched on GMT's P500 system), Survive: 5-6 Player Mini-Expansion, Alcatraz: The Scapegoat (a Spiel 2011 release from Kuźnia Gier), Midnight Men (a cooperative deck-building game from designer Yves Tourigny in which the players are superheroes) and 18OE, a ten-hour 18xx game themed around the Orient Express.

Eminent Domain looks really exciting. The artwork is amazing and the game play looks interesting as well. So it's great that an expansion is already in the works!

Well, here's the Excalibur from the Kaamelott serie

and YES, there is a joke somewhere in an episode about lightsabers...

For those who do not know, the series is very humoristic (except the 5th season, where it is much darker, but still has lots of jokes) where Arthur is surrounded by a bunch of loosers, where Merlin is useless at magic, etc...

More info on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaamelott

The first two seasons are available on DVD (Region 1) with english subtitles in Canada... you might be able to get your paws on some...

If you must compare, then more acurate would be "Glory to Rome: The Race for the Galaxy Deckbuilding Game"

Eminent Domain is superficially similar in one respect to each of those three titles, but as they say, the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts - and Eminent Domain is a wholly different game experience than Glory to Rome, Race for the Galaxy, and any deck building game out there.

I haven't played Glory to Rome, thus I can't compare. The theme affinity with Race for the Galaxy makes some similarities more evident. First, there is role selection with everyone having the choice to follow and a bonus to the active player. Then you are basically laying down planets that you may either conquer via military power or settle by paying with cards from your hand. Of course, analogous to developments, you have technologies. Some planets produce goods that may be traded for victory points, and so on.

I do agree, though, that the experience must be very different - in the same way that the Catan Card Game is very different from The Settlers of Catan. Anyway, I say that in jest, please don't take it as a criticism.

Now, should I mention that it has the same plastic ships from Galactic Emperor?

I figure this will come up as defensive, but that's not my intent. Here are some points which I hope people realize when they compare to RftG:
Quote:
First, there is role selection with everyone having the choice to follow and a bonus to the active player.

This is not unique to RftG - EVERY Role selection game works this way. In fact, RftG is DIFFERENT in that the roles are chosen simultaneously.

Quote:
Then you are basically laying down planets that you may either conquer via military power or settle by paying with cards from your hand.

Another similarity, yes, but also another difference - in Eminent Domain each planet can EITHER be Settled OR Attacked. In RftG it's one or the other. Also, planets do not come from your hand, you choose from a subset when you do a Survey role, and the more cards you play to Survey, the better your choice of planet.

Quote:
Of course, analogous to developments, you have technologies.

Only 6 of the 39 technology cards come into play and stay there (analogous to Technologies). Most of the technology cards are analogous to Dominion's Kingdom cards in that they go into your deck and provide actions to you which your opponents do not have.

Quote:
Some planets produce goods that may be traded for victory points, and so on.

This is similar to RftG, as well as any other game which has resources which are produced.

Quote:
I do agree, though, that the experience must be very different - in the same way that the Catan Card Game is very different from The Settlers of Catan. Anyway, I say that in jest, please don't take it as a criticism.

I definitely don't take it as criticism, RftG is a great game to be compared to! I just want people to take those comparisons the right way. i don't want people going into it thinking they're going to have an experience like RftG and be disappointed. I also don't want people to avoid the game if they dislike RftG for some reason which is not like EmDo.

Quote:
Now, should I mention that it has the same plastic ships from Galactic Emperor?

Now that's not a similarity, that's the exact same ships! They were nice enough to give us a good deal on using their mold. Those ships look awesome.

Yes, of course there are differences, as well. And it's totally justifiable that you don't want people to get the wrong idea. I do have my concerns about the game, but similarity to other games is not one of them.

About the ships, I just find it odd that they all have the same value, given the enormous differences in size. It's a shame Terra Prime (a game of yours that I like) didn't have plastic miniatures, but I think these wouldn't work very well. Also, I would prefer them to be unique, although I understand it would have been much more expensive if you had to create the molds. Are the ships gray like in the rulebook? That at least would distinguish them a little bit from the ones in Galactic Emperor.

Oh!, and I will be glad to play Glory to Rome if the opportunity arises. But I don't think I know anyone who owns it, and with that art, I'm not buying it without playing. Race for the Galaxy is one of my most played games, but I wouldn't have bothered to play it a second time if it didn't have a Sci-Fi theme and attractive art.

I fully expect people to use them as denominations, but I specifically did not put that in the rules because I plan to assign different meaning to the different sized ships in a future expansion. The smallest ships will remain Fighters, the medium ships will be Destroyers, and the largest ships will be Dreadnoughts (or something like that). I have not got it all worked out yet, but I have some ideas about how to it. In the mean time, people can kvetch that they're different sizes - or they can think it's cool to get to play with all the different ships, instead of having 35 of the exact same little fighter mini!

Quote:

I'm glad to hear you like Terra Prime! I need more people to play and like that game if the expansion is ever to see the light of day...

Unique would have been EXTRAORDINARILY more expensive.

All of the ships in EmDo are black. I presume they're the same color as the black ships in GE.

In my opinion the complaints about the art in Glory to Rome are overstated. the game is terrific, well worth the $25 or whatever it costs. I don't love the packaging, but it is passable, and I actually think the art is kinda cute. Even if you don't like the art, it does not get in the way of gameplay, the cards are laid out well.

Hi everybody,

@ Cate : Thank you very much for your interest for Cité. We have been a bit sticky about the quality and the first box were releasd in France only in march, but the result is great.

Cité is in English and French, it is a 2 languages edition, but I am looking for a publisher for the English speaking coutries, because the boxes I printed will be sold out in France before the end of the year I guess. Eric Price (eric arrobase ggdistribution dot com ) , a distributor, has taken 60 boxes of the original edition for the US.
