I met my boyfriend in a warehouse over three years ago. I met him on my first day and from my side it was love at first sight. I was just immediately drawn to him. I kept seeing him there, but it was hard to make friends with him at work where we were separated most of the day. I needed an excuse to ask him to come over. An excuse, because we hardly knew each other. It would have been quite weird to just ask him to come over so I needed a good, solid reason to do so.

And one day it hit me: board games. I could ask him over to play board games with me and some of my friends. I already knew he was a little bit geeky, so of course he would agree to it. And he did. And he came. And we played. And he came back many other Friday nights and occasionally we played board games too. At the time I didn't even have any cool games! I think my coolest game was A-Maze-ing Labyrinth. But he was kind and agreed to play everything with me. He even played Guess Who? over and over again with me.

Eventually we became a couple, and I think board games played a role in the foundation of our relationship. I'm not sure if I had asked him over if I hadn't have board games as an excuse. I am not sure if my boyfriend remembers this. It's somehow funny actually. That we became friends over a board game table and that we still play board games. Was it a sign? Anyway. Like I said, we didn't have any cool games at first and once we got bored with the games we had, we started to collect games from flea markets. Silly games like Bombay Bazar. We didn't know any better.

Until one day when my boyfriend discovered Ticket to Ride. He told me it had good reviews on something called "board game geek", and he told me it was some kind of a train game. I thought it might be fun, so we went to the board game store together for the first time ever and bought it. I was a little intimidated at first when I saw all the locomotive cards, I wasn't used to games like that. But after the first play I was already thinking it was the best game ever, and I wanted to play again right away. I think Ticket to Ride was an eye-opener to us: we realized that there is a whole world of awesome board games out there just waiting for us to discover it.

And now after 24 board games, a closet dedicated for them and a dice tower, we're still in love with each other. I call it a good start.

(And from his side it was not love at first sight. He later confessed that he thought for months that I was just plain weird.)

I'd like to think that board games played a great roll in my own relationship with my girlfriend.

I started out as an RPG Geek, but I found Settlers of Catan during one of the nights when not everyone could make it. I was instantly hooked.

I showed it to my girlfriend who was a little apprehensive to play. She knew that I played D&D and Magic: The Gathering and was totally fine with it, but those worlds never really mixed.

We sat down to play Settlers of Catan and after the first game I beat her with something like 10-5. I considered letting her win the first game, but I'm competitive by nature. I also know that she's an intelligent and resourceful human being so I knew she'd be able to pick the game up and play competitively. Beating her on that day was the best thing I have ever done because she made me play a second game with her right then and there. We continued to play until she was able to beat me.

From then on, I slowly introduced her to new games as they were introduced to me by BGG: Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Race for the Galaxy, Dominion--fast forward to today where we play intense games of 2 player Puzzle Strike, D&D: Castle Ravenloft, Pandemic, and when we can get the players for it, Descent, Tales of the Arabian Nights, Hansa Teutonica, and Battlestar Galactica.

Four years going and I'm still in love with this girl.

Dude, you win the award for unintentional double-entendre of the day! Can anyone else spot it, or was it just my childish mind? For which I am glad to testify that it was playing games that kept me so young.

My SO and I will celebrate 25 years of marriage this year and "it was Games what done it for us" too. Like you, I worked with my (soon to be) SO, but nothing happened until I got an invite to play D&D 'cos my SO's brother played. Turned out my SO isn't a Game player, but it was the "in" that got us seeing each other socially, for which I am forever thankful. Plus we have 4 games-playing kids from the deal - so I'm seriously up on the deal meeple

We are 16 years married, and it's funny to think of all the times my wife played Cosmic Encounter with me in college. Funny, because she would never come close to playing a game like that now (she does go for the TTR, Thurn and Taxis, Finca, Zooloretto type games). Obviously she was just indulging me with the CE while we were dating.

My now-wife, then-girlfriend used to stay up late playing Balloon Cup on the bed before going to sleep. She is quite competitive, and I had beaten her several games in a row. After one more defeat, she got all huffy and said, "Why do you hate me?!" I replied, "I don't hate you... I love you!" (for the first time). And promptly hid my head under the pillow.

Man your boyfriend is a lucky guy. I love my wife (celebrated our 16th Anniversary last weekend) but my gaming side has never mixed well with her. Sure, she'd appease me by playing a few "gateway" games like Settlers or Scotland Yard, but she won't touch the more "geeky" games with a 10 foot pole (like Cosmic Encounter, Descent, Arkham Horror, etc). And the past few years, she's even stopped playing the gateway games and just gives me a "game night" once a month.

We still share many moments, marriage is quite strong, but gaming is a big part of my life and it would be wonderful to share it with a significant other. Of course, I like to tell myself it's best that we don't or else we'd never get anything done and just play games all the time

That, and I've got children I can play with now

For me it was quite different. I met a very hot Pilates Instructor girl that owns her own studio, tall and with a gorgeous body. I am the envy of all my friends and on top, my family totally loves her, specially my two nieces that are kind of my little shining star amulet.

But she is totally not on board games, at all... Would any of you guys like to trade? whistle

What a great story. Thanks for sharing it. I really enjoy your writing. You seem to share things in a way that makes me feel like I'm there watching the story evolve. Keep up the great blog posts!

I game with my wife nearly on a daily basis. While board games weren't the foundation of our relationship it has always been a part of our relationship and in the past year as I have gone full blown BGG it has become a great way for her and I to connect, have some fun and communicate extremely well. The conversations had during gaming are such honest and open conversations and when they are difficult conversations the distraction of the games is quite welcome.

Thanks for a great post!

I thought you were weird for some time, but I don't think it was for months.

And, for my defense, when we first met, you were engaged to someone else, so I pretty much thought that I'd have no chance whatsoever; I kinda had lost the game before it even had started so why bother starting it. Plus I probably would still think it'd be weird if someone I've known for like a week or so sat next to me during a coffee break and started talking in one long incredible unbroken sentence moving from topic to topic covering everything about everything including her big sister's boyfriends during elementary school etc.

But it could just be me.

Edit: I guess I should chance my name to "Amoena's bf" or something, since that's the only thing she's ever referring me by.

I could have sat silently like he did... but I think that would have made it quite awkward. For my defense, it took pretty much six months before he started to talk to me. For real. I had to keep the conversation up all by myself and it wasn't so easy

And just for the record, I had already been engaged for four years, and to a man I was already breaking up with. It's not like I met other guy and dumped him for that. I have more class

My wife and I met because she listed board games as a hobby on an online dating site, and I was sick of rifling through ads that were the same generic "I love shopping and baseball teehee!"

I honestly thought she would be thinking "Monopoly" or "Connect Four." Ended up being "Settlers Of Catan."

The rest is history.

My wife and I used to play games alot as were dating. So when I finally decided to ask her to marry me I had to do it over a board game. So I set it up with the others in our group to play life one night. At the point in the game in which you have to stop to get married I pulled the ring box out of my back pocket. She was so busy trying to remind me to take a life tile that she didn't notice me struggling to open the box which had been squished in my pocket. She looked up when I exhaled loudly as the box jerked open. I think my lurch as the lid popped loose caught her attention. Needless to say she said yes.

I will never give up that life board.
