Tuesday Evening Gamers - April 12th - Carolus Magnus, In the Shadow of the Emperor, Vikings

April 12th

As in normal fashion, The long running three handed Sheepshead game with Timm and Kevin was continued as we waited for the others. I angered the Sheepshead gods by mocking the hands the others were passing on by stating, boldly, that if I got those hands, I would win.

Nope.

I got those hands twice in a row, on doublers, and lost the first one 60-60 (tie goes to the non-picker) and the other one I got 58. So, doubler, double on the bump, at the end of the hands we played, I lost 24 points and now Timm and I are tied at +20. Kevin made ground and is at -40. I'm not opening my mouth again or I am just going to start mauering, like they do. LOL

During the game, Chris called to state he would not be making it, so it was just the three of us last night. It allowed us to play a game that Timm had been chomping at the bit to play with three, Carolus Magnus. An area control/stock type of game and as one geekbuddy stated, Tammany Hall reminded him of this game. And I would have to agree. Carolus Magnus, I think, is a great game with two and just as fun with three. It's pretty abstract as the theme is barely there, but I'm an abstract fan. The game ended up with Kevin winning off of a mistake (or really, an oversight) that Timm made. He took control of Yellow right before my turn. With him doing that, I did not have a viable turn and with the movement of the king I had to play, would give Kevin the win (if he saw what he could do). Well, he's good so he seen that. Timm had no stake in that area so he was foucsing on his next turn. Great game and it's excellent with three. You have lookahead but with three twists are inevitable. My fault for falling behind in the court and not having any type of majority.

After that, it was Kevin's turn to teach, so we broke out Vikings to play. I found this to be very interesting and quick. I love how the wheel works in this game and the money management that goes with it. Tough and you have room to make very satisfying moves. I will definately play again. And this was the basic game! I'm not sure what type of game you would call this. Tile laying? Anyways, Kevin won this one (he had one boatsman left and a ton of fisherman which gave him big points whereas Timm and I lost points as we didn't have as many fisherman and wasn't able to take care of things. Kevin had 63, I had 46 and Timm had 38.

We still had some time for another game so we broke out a three player game of In the Shadow of the Emperor, one of my favorite area control games. I played a ton online (mabiweb) but only once in person. The four player game is best, but three player, I think, is still a great game. (Four=Awesome). We had to rehash the rules some but the game took us less than 2 hours including the rehash and AP we all suffered. We did forget the one rule, again, about the Emperor placing a city to start the game. We realized that half way through. Obviously, it would have made a difference but we left it out and I wrote that note on the setup card (the game isn't going anywhere). Timm started off as Emperor and Kevin took it for a few turns with Timm taking it to end the game. It's a very fluid game and you have to be aggressive and proactive. You definately do not want to always "protect" your areas, you want to be taking over areas as that is big points. In the end, though, it was Kevin again with 26, I had 23 and Timm had 22. We do play with hidden points in person. Less AP that way.

Mr. Modelo joined us, as well. Forgot about him. The Skull is dead. I'm not sure of the beer Kevin was drinking, but he was saying it was one of the best beers he had in some time.

You guys should give the advanced game of Vikings a try. I think it's a much better game with the advanced rules. I would suggest not using the auction variant as I don't really see that it adds anything to the game.

Maybe next month at Geekway I can get a game in with the Milwaukee crew.
