Welborn Family Gaming

Welcome to Larry and Melissa's blog. We focus on two player gaming and gaming with our two children, ages 10 & 8. This blog will feature random musings, gaming reports and reviews from both of us. We will also post some non-gaming thoughts from time to time. Feel free to join in the discussions.

Another busy week that cut significantly into our family game time.

My son has been asking to play Chess, so I spent some time during the weekday evening teaching him. We played a few games but it mostly consisted of me showing him how the pieces moved and working on learning exercises such as having him mate me with a King and Rook against a King.

Our first real gaming took place Friday evening. Melissa decided to make some potato soup and chili since it was a rainy day. While she was doing that, I pulled out a game she hated, Ricochet Robots, to teach to the kids.

I patiently explained the game and showed examples but the game didn't go that well. When the kids found a solution it was great. When not, both got very frustrated and whiny. I will probably wait a year or two before bringing this out again.

After dinner, we had a 4 player game of 7 Wonders.

Everyone had played before so after a quick explanation we were ready to go. My daughter went for a military strategy while my son opted for a strong science civilization. My wife developed a lot of blue and yellow while I built a lot of resources and grabbed a bunch of guilds in the 3rd age.

All of us completed our wonder. When we added up the scores we had a close game. I won, followed by my daughter with only 4 fewer points. Two points behind her, my wife and son tied for 3rd place.

After the kids went to bed, my wife and I had time for a quick game of Dominion. We chose cards from the base game and prosperity.

I got off to a good start, but my wife fine-tuned her deck better. The game ended with all provinces being bought and my wife claimed a 63-55 win.

Saturday night we had time for a couple of games. First up was our first play of La Strada.

The simple game has a high potential to hose the other players. We played it more as a family game, though, so the scores were close. My wife won with 26 points. My daughter and I tied with 23 and my son finished last with 20.

After that, we had time for a quick play of Liar's Dice.

I completely dominated, losing no dice. My daughter was the first eliminated, followed by my wife. My son hung on for the longest, but could never cause me to lose a die.

Sunday was a day for Church, a family feast at my cousin's, and geocaching so there was no time for games.

See you next week.

Geocaching? We just got a handheld GPS for that purpose, but if we don't find a "real" cache, the kids are not as excited. Sort of like playing Ricochet Robots with them anyone.

We've only been geocaching since early March. After a trip to the woods with a car GPS that left us with no finds, I bought a handheld GPS as well. Since then we've had much more success, although we are sticking with 1 and 2 difficulties so far. My kids also prefer the ones that have a bunch of junk really cool items.

Ricochet Robots is a game that I quite enjoy. No one else that I know shares that sentiment however.

Exactly! I was willing to give it a try a while back, but let me see, trying to plot out advance moves of my robot, plus moving other robots to make it happen and having to keep it all in my head? No thank you! Too much like work! lol

To be accurate, it was more like this:

Melissa: Furiously searches for a solution.
Larry: Sits, but doesn't flip over the timer.

Melissa: I can solve in 36 moves, flips timer.
Larry: I can solve in 5. Wins chip.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

Ok, perhaps I can see why you didn't like the game.

In fairness, my earlier post was slightly inaccurate. Our friend Sara, who is an engineer, is also good at the game and likes it.

Matt,

My son is 9 1/2 and my daughter is 8. Both have been gaming since they were able to hold their head up.

I see that you have two girls. How old are they? Do they enjoy gaming?

They are 5 and 2. The oldest enjoys playing games, she loves PitchCar where she can hold her own and Zooloretto where she needs a bit of help from Mummy or Daddy. The youngest just tries to eat the pieces at the moment.
