A couple of weeks ago, I pasted a comment on the Welborn Family Gaming blog to the effect that their family exploits were an inspiration to me to get mine off the DS and to the dinner table.
Now, we have had intermittent gaming together. Sometimes it is a desire to play one of the Lego games they have, or to play with Mouse Trap. A bit more interesting is my youngest's interest in Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs. But mostly they like to play their own thing and I mostly play board games with my wife.
Well, recently, she has been working long hours and hasn't much energy for games. But encouragingly, right after I posted that comment, there was a teacher work day and I got a request for some games.
Both boys played. First, we played Forbidden Island. We started off going great, but things went wrong in the latter parts of the game and we just couldn't keep up with the rate of sinking that was going on. After that combined loss, I pulled out another quicker game. My wife had been relaxing with a computer game called Entanglement and they had been watching her play. So I pulled out the board game version: Tsuro. This was a huge hit and my elder son wanted to play it immediately again with all the colors in the game. Apparently he would control the extras.
We also put together a full race in PitchCar, where despite his relaxed style (especially in qualifying) my eldest suddenly shot into the lead as my youngest and I battled and then comfortably raced ahead for the win. And my biggest surprise was they requested to play Mamma Mia! (I think they just wanted the conversation to turn to pizza) and both did quite well - better than me anyway.
So there is hope yet for these two computer game addicts. Though my younger one told me he did not like Forbidden Island so much as he wanted to win by himself. His mother is not too keen on co-op games either.
