Days of Wonder Digs Deeper with Small World Underground

Philippe Keyaerts' Small World has a been a huge success, spawning a half-dozen expansions (so far) and selling more than 100,000 copies in ten languages since its debut in 2009.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise to see Keyaerts and publisher Days of Wonder put a new spin on the system to give players more of what they enjoy. Small World Underground is a standalone game that retains the feel and game play of Small World, while providing a wealth of new races and special powers for players to enjoy.

Small World Underground is set in the subterranean world below the one being fought over in Small World, with four separate game boards for the four possible player configurations. Players will once again be drafting race/power combinations to try to conquer areas in a land that's too small to fit everyone comfortably, but this time certain areas are occupied by monsters that are guarding relics and "places of power". In addition to having 15 new races and 21 new special powers, Small World Underground includes 9 Popular Places; 6 Righteous Relics; 9 Black Mountains; 1 Volcano; 106 Victory Coins; Armor, Hammer and Vengeance markers; a "Bag-o'-Many-Things"; and (according to the press release) "many other special items".

While Small World Underground is playable on its own, the game can be combined with other Small World releases, presumably by mixing races and powers as desired. The Days of Wonder press release notes that Small World Underground "is recommended for players who are already familiar with Small World".

Small World Underground will be released in June 2011 in Europe and in July 2011 in North America with a retail price of $50/€45.

- there is a face up there on the right side? (I can see on the wallpaper sized picture that it looks like the cultist)
- those blobs of jelly on the left? Or just decoration?
- laughing guy in cloak
- the blue guy next to the shadow mime is a shadow mime or something else? -- DROW

now it is high time its gets a separate page...

With it being compatible to the base game, I will most likely bite. Not sure of the need for new boards but I'll just consider it an expensive expansion to the base game.

When we get to the card and/or dice version, I am out.

I really don't see how this is jumping the shark. This is awesome. Putting out more awesomeness is jumping the shark? Jumping the shark is when you have expansions that are nonsensical/ridiculous (like Carc Catapult), not just putting out more good stuff. If this is jumping the shark, here's a shark *makes one with hand* and here's me *jumps it with his other hand*

Yeah, I agree with this - I don't track the discussion around this game all that closely, but it does seem from my limited engagement as though one of the things that has been commonly requested is new maps. This would seem to be the next logical step for this game, given what the players seem to be asking for.

When they introduce a flicking mechanic, then we can talk about jumping the shark.

I don't play SW anyway, but it does seem like they're just cranking out expansion after expansion after expansion, and printing a new board and selling it as a new game didn't seem like it was really worth anything, but if the fans actually want new maps, then I suppose it's not JTS.

This is really no different than Dominion, Carcassonne, The Settlers of Catan or, God forbid, Munchkin. Each expansion does add something new to the game via all the different possible interactions. And you can't underestimate the price factor. Every expansion so far has been at $20 or less.

While its nice to have new powers and abilities, SW having other maps (4!) and hopefully, building on the idea of 'scenarios' as seen in Necromancer Island, will only add good flavor to this title.

This is, in part, to build on scenarios...right?

I disagree with the first three. Small World is in the DB with a 2009 date; further digging says that within a margin of error of about a month, the game is 2 years old.

In that time, it has spawned 6 official pay expansions, by my count. Underground would be 7 if you counted it as an expansion. That's a far, far, more aggressive pace of expansions than Dominion (which is getting its 5th expansion in 2.5 years now), or any of the others except maybe Munchkin.

It looks like milking a cash cow... not that there's anything wrong with it, if it's really going to be a good expansion, it's just a very aggressive schedule

The "milking" argument for board games never really made sense to me. Companies are out to make money and, if they hit a winning formula, they are going to strike while the iron is hot. No real shame in that.

Two things: 1. I think that there is an inherent difference between Small World Expansions and other games: Price. The pricing is low enough for what you get. Most of the outcry against this game (okay, no one is crying yet) is based on it being an expansion. This is not a freaking expansion. It is standalone, but using the same system. I love that, and makes me want it more as a variety factor. I do get bored of the original two and three player boards, so having new boards and rules would be fun.

2. I wonder if there will be a game mode for those with both sets that allows travel between the overworld and underworld. That would be interesting, and allow three or four people to play on two two player boards.

Edit: Inherent, not Inherint.

You also have to consider that the majority of the expansions for Small World have been "mini" expansions, closer in scope to the Dominion promos than a full expansion.

I consider Cursed! and Grand Dames to be basically one expansion (They were released at the same time and together they contain the same amount of content as Be Not Afraid), and Leaders to be a minor expansion that really shouldn't count if we're making comparisons only to boxed Dominion expansions.

Necromancer Island was a little freebie that was given away with Be Not Afraid (or another Small World purchase), so I don't really count that as another full expansion either.

When you put it into perspective, there haven't really been an exorbitant amount of expansions for Small World.

Cursed! and Grand Dames
Be Not Afraid and Necromancer Island
Tales of Small World
Leaders (minor promo)

Not really more aggressive than Dominon, in that case.

That sounds like a good way to combine SW with SWU and get around problems with terrain based powers/races due to the different terrain between the games

Agreed. Multiplayer needs to be added and new expansions should be added.

Although will they add those or just create the iOS version of this new game, which can be built from the start with muliplayer? Interesting. I'd both either or both for sure.

And why hasn't Ticket to Ride come to iPad? That's another sure-fire success if done well.

Yeah... you can't compare SW to Dominion.

Dominion: 40$ (base)+40$ (intrigue)+20$(alchemy)+40$(seaside)+40$(prosperity) = 180$
(on a side note: In Switzerland a big box costs 65ish $ and a small box like alchemy around 40).

SW: 40 (base)+10 (1st mini exp)+10 (2nd mini exp)+15 (tales) +15 (be not afraid) + 5$ (leaders from the BGG store) = 95$
This is because the necromancer island is free.

The prices are probably wrong... but it was just to give a rough idea of the difference between the two.

I can't believe the amount of complaining, accusations of profiteering, and snide swipes at the publisher coming from the peanut gallery.

If the quality of the expansion doesn't match the price, then naysayers can blanket us with smug. Right now, actual information about the game is thin on the ground.

Small World is a game structured to benefit from expansion, where the number of combinations increases exponentially with each new special power. Fans have created countless races and special powers in the time it has been released. Saying that there is some kind of arbitrary limit on the publisher is ridiculous.

Just based on reading reviews and general negativity towards those 2 games (both here and on other boardgame sites).

DOW milking Small World?

Too many expansions?

Too expensive?

If your complaining about any of these, ask yourself why? Just don't buy it, if they sell a few 10's of thousands of copies then they have done right by themselves and their customers. There really is no such thing as too many expansions unless you have some kind of complete-ist disorder (which I think is quite common around these parts) and have to buy it, even though you don't want to.

Has anyone created a "Shark" race and a "Jumping" power?
Or do we have to wait for "Small World Underwater"?

Looks nice! I dig the art for the Lizardmen and the fire elementals. Definitely will keep an eye on this one.

I would much rather play Vinci than Smallworld. The main reason is all of the powers/races. The best improvements to me were the number of turns and hidden VP, which you could easily implement when playing Vinci.

Yes because the only thing I want to do more than buy ANOTHER small world expansion is buy the same one twice.

Unfortuneately I would end up doing exactly that since I rarely play the boardgame version itself but the iPAD version is such a nice and quick filler...

Ridiculous - even if the other two games were 'busts,' there's no way this whole game was produced since the release of Cargo Noir.

I've almost trade it after my first game, let it rest on shelf for months, then gave it another go and since then I have become I fan.

Back on topic, price-wise Small World even with all of it's expansions is still fairly inexpensive and I think a very good game for what it is.

No rights reserved; go ahead.

I agree. I think most SW players do. After all, if you leave out the promos, the rest of the expansions can get picked up at online retailer prices for like, $40?

I just wish Tales and Legends was more consistent and usable, (after two tries my gaming group gave up on it) and Necro Island wasn't completely broken.

Why do you think Tales and Legends is (somewhat?) unusable?

I think it adds a little bit of "predictable unpredictability" and spices things up a bit.

But I'm always playing two players... maybe that's the reason...

I really like Tales and Legends too, Francesco. For my feel, is one of the best expansion.

I like Tales and Legends, conceptually, but both times I played it with my friends (once we picked randomly, once we used one of the themed decks) the cards just pooped randomly all over a couple players, and benefited others in game-deciding ways. I don't remember the specific combinations that occurred but I feel like there was a year when the person who had pixies just got to earn 20 coins or something because of a lucky draw.

After that mess, no one wants to play with it anymore.
