• Voting is open for the 2011 Deutscher Spiele Preis. Vote for up to five titles in the family games category and one title in the children's game category. Deadline for entry is July 31, 2011, with a chance to win games for those who vote.

• GameSalute.com has launched Springboard, essentially a Kickstarter-style program that features nothing but games. Only one title is listed on Springboard as of its May 1, 2011 launch date, but I'm sure more titles will be springing forth in no time.

• Fantasy Flight Games has released digital versions of Hey, That's My Fish! for both iOS and Android devices, with a physical version of the game (previously published in English by Mayfair Games) coming in Q3 2011. You can check out the penguin miniatures to be included in the game in this game announcement from FFG.

• The first issue of the French-language Ystari Magazine is available for download (PDF) from the Ystari Games website.

• Speaking of Ystari, Dice Hate Me reports that the French publisher will release versions of Alien Frontiers in French, German, Italian and Spanish before the end of 2011. LocWorks will produce versions in Polish and "Eastern European" languages.

• Rio Grande Games lists a June 2011 release date for a reprint of Glen More.

• Looney Labs has two new promo postcards set to ship in June 2011 to tie into the release of Seven Dragons, a rethemed version of Aquarius with fantasy art from Larry Elmore and other tweaks.

• Designer Wolfgang Kramer has added a page of anecdotes about his games to his website. Strangely, the anecdotes are images and not text, so you'll need to know German to read them as you can't translate the page.

• Túaw reviews the Tikal iOS app from Codito/Sage Board Games. This isn't news for the review itself so much as for my continued amazement at how much coverage modern strategy games will get in mainstream-ish forums when the digital version of a game breaks out compared to coverage of the game itself. I'm old, though, so maybe my amazement means nothing. (HT: David Reed)

• In other iOS news, designer Al Newman has reported to me that he's signed a contract for an iPhone/iPad version of Dynasties, first released by Jolly Roger Games in 2005, then republished as Sun Tzu in 2010 by Matagot. Says Newman, "This will be multiplayer online, with rankings, ratings, the whole nine yards."

• In addition to Mondo now being playable on BrettspielWelt, designer Michael Schacht has created a special solo version of the game that's playable on Schacht's own website, with the time element replaced by a limitation on the number of times that a solver can exchange tiles while trying to reconstruct the landscape. You download the rules in English (PDF) or German (PDF)

I speak only one of those languages, so let's see if they publish it in my country. (I speak a very little russian too, but that does not count)

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (which is what TUAW stands for) has actually been doing a good job of reviewing the iOS ports of modern strategy games as they have happened. Based on what I have been reading there, I get the impression that one or more of their reviewers are familiar with the real world versions of many of the games. Even if the reviewer hasn't been familiar with the original game, they are almost always including information to point people back to the original game (frequently here, but also sometimes to the publisher, too). The increased exposure for boardgames can only be a good thing for the hobby - I can't tell you how many college students I have encountered here whose first exposure to modern boardgames was through XBox or iOS ports. The important thing is that the ports need to be faithful to the original boardgame and they need to be good applications. It doesn't matter how faithful the adaptation is - if the game crashes all the time, it will not make anyone want to try out the original game.

This is a great point David. I agree it is a good thing for the industry. There is a lot of momentum towards digital versions of these games so it should be interesting to watch it unfold in the months ahead.

It is nice to hear some real world stories of digital games having an impact on bringing awareness to the hobby.

Back in my college days we spent many an evening playing Cosmic Encounter. I hope the next generation at least occasionally takes a break from the XBox to break out the cardboard.

Hello Gergely.

LocWorks will be publishing Alien Frontiers initially in Polish and has the option to publish in the following languages: Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian.

So, perhaps your language is on their list, but I cannot be sure when they will publish in that language. I suggest that you email Piotr at LocWorks and urge him to publish in your language as quickly as possible. Piotr is also a BGG user: locworks

Well, that's going to be the big question, really. Several publishers we talked to liked Alien Frontiers but were not confident that a scifi game would find enough of a market in Europe to make it worth their while. Some even wanted to re-theme it to make it more marketable. We decided to go with Ystari because they liked the game a lot and were willing to keep it intact. They do want to change the cover art, but otherwise, EU gamers will receive the same retro scifi enjoyment that the rest of us are getting. Thanks Ystari!

I agree with David. Though inspired by print games these are first and foremost apps and they do need to be good apps because they are representing a print product.

I recall how many threads on BGG have discussed the appearance of (few) modern board games in mainstream retail like Target, WalMart, etc. Well, the App Store is as mainstream retail as it gets for apps. And aside from the App Store "featured" lists (and that's a big aside), these games are sitting there on the shelf with everything else on a level playing field.

What's really exciting to think about is all the quality of game play and cleverness of mechanics of modern board games perhaps being on the verge of further mainstream discovery through yet another digital channel in the form of iOS and Android. If good apps are made (and discovered) then surely quality games will win the day...one day.

I prefer the multi-color figures in the Mayfair deluxe edition. Unfortunately this will be a step down in component quality.

As long as it's a step down in price (not to mention price fixing), that's fine by me.

Hi there. I'm the guy (Sebastian) who does most (all?) of the long-form iOS board game reviews at TUAW. Thanks for noticing. blush I have indeed been playing board games for a long, long time, and wanted to get an iPad in part to see how board games would translate to that device. In short: I'm very amazed, and I can't wait for even more and better board game apps to come out. You can see a constantly updated geeklist of all the board/card iOS games I've reviewed (54 and counting!) here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/53624/a-neverending-an...

If anyone has any questions or comments or is a developer looking to get a game reviewed, let me know!

You know it seems to me that Alien Frontiers would make an EXCELLENT digital game. Looking into that?

Things are looking very good for some of the language versions. I hope to have an official statement for at least 2 languages some time next week.
