New Game Round-up: Tanto Cuore in English, Glenn Drover Builds an Empire & More

• An English version of Tanto Cuore – the Japanese deck-building game from Masayuki Kudou in which players aspire to become King of the Maids – will soon be available in U.S. stores via Japanime Games, a publishing name for online retailer Cardhaus. The game is available now through Cardhaus, with the bulk of the shipment in transit and expected to be available through distributors before the end of May 2011. Says Cardhaus' Eric Price, "We expect to have expansions later this year as well."

Glenn Drover's Age of Empires III is getting a name change to Glenn Drover's Empires: The Age of Discovery, and along with the name change comes word that the long-delayed expansion – the Builder Expansion, with bits for a sixth player, twenty new buildings and a new specialist – will also be forthcoming.

But wait, there's more! These two items are part of a series from Eagle Games that is dubbed – wait for it – Glenn Drover's Empire Series, with the next title in the series being Glenn Drover’s Empires: Ancient Empires, which uses a similar system for Empires: The Age of Discovery but with players controlling one of the civilizations from the Roman era. I should have more info on this series the week of May 9, 2011.

• Dutch publisher White Goblin Games plans to release a Dutch edition of Adam Kałuża's K2 in May 2011, according to Bordspel.com.

• Dan Manfredini's Venture Forth has gone live as a Kickstarter project from publisher Minion Games.

Asmodee will release two titles from Matagot in May 2011 in North America: Double Agent and Jungle.

• Wizards of the Coast has announced a July 8, 2011 release date for Battleship Galaxies.

• Fantasy Flight Games has posted rules (PDF) for Twilight Imperium: Shards of the Throne.

• Atlas Games has posted a first look at the cover of Cthulhu Gloom – a nice marriage of Edward Gorey and ultra-slimy...

Say Anything Family has been released and should be available throughout U.S. stores. by the end of May 2011.

• New titles – well, relatively new titles – in the BGG database that might be of interest include:

-----* Redakai, a new TCG based on a cartoon series that's co-designed by the Ascension team of Justin Gary, Brian Kibler and John Fiorello. Publisher Spin Master Ltd has been posting a series of YouTube videos on the game, including this game summary which oddly appears to have been filmed in a basement.
-----* South African Railroads from Winsome Games (although all copies of the current edition have been claimed).
-----* Space Maze, with aliens making their way through doors toward the coveted relic only if the doors are properly color-coded. Snobby aliens...
-----* Lords of Baseball, which sounds hugely involved, but perfect for those who want to dig deep in a baseball simulation.

I spent about three years of my life trying to design a board game version of a baseball GM sim. It became my personal white whale. So Lords of Baseball is very intriguing to me.

A baseball GM sim has a LOT of variables to track. I wonder if and how they pulled it off.

I remember discussing this idea with you at Protospiel. I, too, have often thought an organization-building simulation might be more interesting than a game simulation. That said, it hasn't been a white whale for me.

interestingly, both Redakai and Cthulu Gloom feature cards with transparent sections allowing overlay of abilities. Alot like Hecatomb I guess. hmmm.

Lords of Baseball should be interesting. There is only one person, my brother, that would even play it with me so depending on the price I would give it a shot. Sounds fun...even with a 240min play time.

As did the original Gloom.

I didn't notice the 240 minute playing time. Not surprising. Like I said, a LOT of variables.

I guess if that is 5 seasons, it's not too bad.

Wow, I'm amazed (and rather humbled) to see Lords of Baseball mentioned on BGGnews. This game is really my father's creation. I helped with about 15% of the rules and did the graphic work for him. He's been brainstorming this for over 10 years and I am really happy to help him see it come to fruition.

The design allowed for us to create a shortened version of the game which lasts 3 seasons. The 5 season game will be the tournament version (also the base game). An extra-innings variant will be played over 7 years. (The game was originally planned for 20 years, but after testing a few seasons we figured no one would want to spend the time to play 20 -- although players are certainly welcome to try).

The length of the game is really dependent on how long each owner takes to create their initial teams. After that, the game flows pretty well. Our initial plan was to open it up to 8 teams - through testing we feel that while it can certainly handle 8, the length of the game would be stupid long. 240 minutes is based on 4 players.

I'm currently working on transferring the rules from MS Word to a more graphically pleasing PDF (with picture examples). I am a teacher and my school year ends June 10 - so hopefully the rules will be complete by end of June for perusal.

The final artwork on the cards will likely change as well. The card example I uploaded to the LoB BGG page were for testing. I own the copyrights to all the images used, but the background images ARE of a "real" team and we don't want MLB to think we are using their likenesses and logos to profit. (because as we all know, game designers design games for the Bill Gatesian profits, right? )

We're happy with the game board - but the board itself is really not much more than a scoring track, phase/year markers, and several of the game charts. (at times, it has the feel of a war game)

The game is definitely more of an economic building engine than a baseball simulation. We think it's the first Sports themed Eurogame. At the end of the game, the player with the most Victory Points is the winner.

We've used baseball as a theme, but you won't see batting averages, total HR's, ERA's or any statistic other than wins and losses.

Owners will hire (and have to pay for) different levels of various things. For example, an organization's farm system will rank from 1-5 stars. A 1 star farm system is cheap, but with poor players to choose from. A 5 star farm system is expansive, but filled with players capable of making the Major League team. It's important to keep a strong farm system because the Major League team will experience injuries and retirements. Farm system stars are also worth Victory Points.

Another example - the Major League Manager also has a rating - A, B, C, or D. His rating affects how many wins a team is capable of. Every part of the organization is important to the overall score. Working within a budget is also important.

If you have any specific questions I'll do my best to answer without letting too much out of the bag.

I'm really looking forward to giving Lords of Baseball a try. Sounds like multiplayer Universal Baseball Association sans the game play. As a long time baseball junkie, should be right up my ally. Hopefully I can find enough others who want to get it to the table!

Thanks Randy! I think it plays best with 4, but it scales well to 2 as well. We tried to come up with a solitaire variant, but it didn't have the same feel as playing against other players.

I'm not familiar with Universal Baseball Association - will have to look it up and see.

Interesting, no one comments about the manga fantasy maid game coming to the US. Just baseball.

I've also been surprised by the near-universal focus on Lords of Baseball. Not that I have anything against the game – I did include it as I thought it would interest some readers – but no one has said "boo" about the new Glenn Drover game. Maybe folks just expect it to come out in 2015, so they're not getting excited...

* Most BGG'ers aren't anime fans.

* Not that many otaku play games -- they have plenty of other non-anime hobbies. Of the anime gamers I've met, Apples to Apples and Munchkin suit them just fine.

* Cardhaus doesn't offer free shipping like other boardgame OLGS's, and TC isn't sold at a discount.

Before I go off about feeling utterly conned at all the nonsense that has been spouted about how the expansion would never come out from none other than Mr D himself, and how we find that the expansion has been held back to act as idiot-bait to induce people into buying the newly titled but identical 'new' game just because it has the expansion in it and thats the only way to get the expansion......etc

Is the expansion available seperately?

Huh, what are you talking about? So far I've only seen mention of the expansion being available separately. The pictures here have its own box and everything.

I don't know about that. Most boardgamers I know appreciate anime in some way.
Probably most people that cared already knew about it though.
