Welborn Family Gaming

Welcome to Larry and Melissa's blog. We focus on two player gaming and gaming with our two children, ages 10 & 8. This blog will feature random musings, gaming reports and reviews from both of us. We will also post some non-gaming thoughts from time to time. Feel free to join in the discussions.

A good week of gaming. I've been making an effort to get games that we haven't played in a year or more back to the table and this week continues the trend.

Monday night saw a 3 player game of Igel Ärgern. My son claimed the victory, I finished 2nd and my daughter finished 3rd.

The children were both going to sleepovers on Friday night, so we had Friday Family Game Night, Thursday edition.

The first game saw me introduce Guillotine to the kids. I spent a bit more time than I intended explaining beheading to them, but we finally got underway. My daughter appeared to be playing irrationally, but there was either method to her madness or the game is so luck dependent as to reward nonsensical play because she stomped us. (Either that or I kept targeting Melissa, allowing my daughter to slide under the radar.) Final Scores: Daughter 21, Larry 16, Son 14, Melissa 13.

The next game up was a family favorite, Diamant.

I think this is an almost perfect family game and I rate it a 10 when playing with children and non-gamers. The game started slowly as the first two caves suffered matching disasters before any gems were discovered. The third cave revealed four gems but none were grabbed before everyone was forced to flee the cave. Scores after 3 caves: Everyone 0.

The fourth cave was better. I grabbed 7 and ran to the surface. My wife and son fled soon after with around 12. My daughter stayed one turn too long and ended up collecting none.

In the last round my wife and son grabbed and got out. My daughter and I were behind and had to stay. That was unfortunate because we again claimed no gems. Final scores: Son 22, Melissa 20, Larry 7, Daughter 0.

We finished the evening with a "game" of Once Upon a Time.

I keep hoping this will turn into a fun storytelling adventure. Both my kids love to make up stories, but for some reason this game just falls flat. I keep stressing the story-telling aspect but everyone wants to win. Oh well.

Saturday saw Melissa and I play a game of Finca.

I went for a double bonus in 1-6 and got both. Melissa went for a bunch of 1-3s and got one 1-6 bonus. She also claimed 3 of the 4 fincas which proved too much. Final Scores: Melissa 67, Larry 66. Arrrrgh.

My daughter then joined me for some games of Cathedral.

My daughter is quite good at this game and I have to play my best to avoid getting beaten badly. Even then, it is a tough battle. We played 8 games and split them, each of us going 4-4. My daughter then proceeded to whip her older brother in a game or two.

After that we finished up with a 4 player game of Tiki Topple.

In this game, my son could do no wrong and nearly lapped the field. We played 4 rounds but it was effectively over after 2. Final scores: Son 36!, Daughter 14, Larry 14, Melissa 12.

Sunday afternoon saw a 3 player game of Formula Dé.

I related the story of my ineptitude in a brief session report: Don't bring a Yugo to a Formula Motor Race.

I ended the gaming week by introducing my kids to Ra. Both of them have played numerous games of Ra: The Dice Game, so it was easy to explain the rules.

It was not so easy to teach strategy however. Final Scores: Larry 48, Daughter 23, Son 13, Melissa 12. Of course, they did beat their mother.
