Dice Hate Me

I’m Chris. I play games. Lots and lots of games. I created Dice Hate Me as a place where I can talk about and review games, preview upcoming titles, write ridiculous and (sometimes) humorous things, and generally spread some paper and boardgaming love. Dice Hate Me is more than just a title, though – it’s a gaming lifestyle. You see, I have really bad dice karma. I’m pretty lucky in life, but hand me a pair of dice in a game and I’m dead meat. I’m the guy that always lands on Boardwalk when somebody owns it. I’m the guy that never gets a Yahtzee. Yeah, I’m the guy that avoids the craps table in Vegas as if it were a minor demon. Still, even though dice hate me, I love them. The little bastards.

The State of Games, Episode 7 is real in, man! In this episode, we revisit some of the controversy from Episode 2 (The One About Naked People) as we ponder a board game age rating system, mowing down pedestrians in Road Kill Rally, psychedelic drug use in SmallWorld, and making cave babies in Stone Age. All this, plus our take on Pastiche, Survive! and building the Railways of the World. Can you dig it?

Well, as the first one of your podcasts I've heard... I'm not sold. Reminds me of a classic, "Much todo about nothing".

I'll listen to another to test more of the "water", but if it has the same drivel as this, I'll keep my old grognard ass away from the "view".
Does this represent the future of fanzines? God we're in deep stuff yuk

But light, love and laughter to you and yours anyway,
Orion

Ok, well, we did get SOME little look at games... WAY at the end... and that was perhaps worth the listen for a couple thoughts on actual playing games instead of PC stuff. wow
But way too much chat for fact, but the discount was cool. And if you're playing ASL last thing you want is 6's!!!! But I do like White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane/Starship. cool

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get anything out of the podcast, but you may have not listened past the "PC" stuff to the real meat of any of the issues.

There are a ton of podcasts out there that talk about nothing but playing games (and many that can do so better than ours), but my wife and I wanted a place where we could occasionally talk about issues or subjects that don't get as much coverage. By elevating conversation from just "who played what" to "what do you think?" we wanted to prove that board games can be more than just a diversion - they can be a reflection of life and art. We're not trying to be political - we just think a lot about board games and how they have a direct impact on ours and a lot of others' lives.

Since my wife is a relatively new "gamer," I feel that she is the perfect foil for my years of experience, and could bring in others who are curious or new to the hobby, or influence those that may have a view of the hobby as simply a children's pasttime. You know - those thousands out there that haven't been playing ASL since they were 13.

So again, sorry that you weren't down with our "drivel." But I have to ask, if you didn't like the podcast, do you think you could have simply stopped listening? Why did you feel the need to leave a comment that seemed to insult mine and my wife's voices in the community?

AMEN!

I agree, if you don't like the podcast, why not just stop listening. No need to bash it..there are some people who actually enjoy it...and so to each his own...

Anyway, I would at least give one of the other episodes a listen or listen to some other's they record in the future. It may worth a second shot.

Just think, if you ever drove a stick shift and you stalled it the first time, did you ever get back in and try it again? Or did you quit because it didn't fit your style? I'm just sayin...

I'm one that welcomes the refreshing new voices of DiceHateMe and Monkey. Yes, listening to people talk about why this or that mechanic works, how much a certain game is "broken" or the latest new releases from Essen is interesting every once in a while, our hobby is about much more than that. I, for one, feel that we are lucky to have these two very intelligent people talk about issues that aren't discussed anywhere else.

Like Chris said, sorry you did not enjoy the podcast, but luckily for you there are many other podcasts out there that might appeal to you. I'm not sure why you had the need to comment, however. Many of the other podcasts are not my cup of tea, but I wouldn't ever think of putting them down so publicly. Hopefully you will rethink this decision in the future.

Ouch! I'm sorry too that this podcast may not have been your cup of tea, but I'm pained to hear it called "drivel." For one thing, I don't think it's drivel at all. I myself much enjoy the quirky, spirited, light-hearted and thoughtful responses to games of Chris and Monkey238. Many listeners like me find their approach a welcome invitation into a chat rather than a lecture. And besides that, they are doing these podcasts as a free service. I'd urge anyone who isn't interested to listen elsewhere and leave it at that. I think I'd feel more than a little hurt to get such a harsh appraisal. (Hence, my feedback on your own feedback. I don't mean to be snarky but to just ask that you put yourself in their shoes.....

Sorry, I wasn't really trying to be that harsh, it was just my thoughts and feelings on the podcast. And to be fair, I listened to #6 also, and found that much more entertaining and informative, and I believe my comments reflected that there.

I didn't think that it had to be just a rah-rah, but surely when I'm subjected to an overabundance of what I feel is PC mentality stuff, and over the top at that, I tend to call it "drivel". Not, trash understand, just drivel, which to me is more, "much todo about nothing", simply.

Just a simple old Grognard that grew up in the very "say whatcha mean" Southern sticks part of Oregon. Each to their own, live and let live, but all have their opinions and I tend to have short views on PC stuff .

If you don't want opinions just say so. I didn't feel snarky but did feel like I'd subscribed to some modern translation of what they now seem to term "liberal thinking", even though I always thought I was a liberal in the forms of Jefferson and many of our forefathers etc. My comments were purely because it really turned me off during much of it, and I wanted to listen through the whole thing for fairness (which I did for both 6 & 7, and comments on 6 were after this).

Anyway, play on, and I'll keep my comments to myself as to not offend or hurt someones ids. I'll just phase out faster and not listen through the whole bloody podcast for gems next time.

Best of luck,
Light, love and laughter to you and yours,
Orion

BTW Alf....

Aren't you the game designer for "The Road to Canterbury"? And isn't it slightly over-the-top to have TWO badge icons as "Fan of TRTC"? Just saying... Seems kinda like thumbing your own post, and kinda iffy if you know what I mean... whistle

Thanks, Orion. I think I take the word "drivel" in a much more harsh way than you do. I appreciate your taking the time to respond here to clarify.

As for the Road to Canterbury badges: they were made by fans, not me. I was doing what I could to say thank you by displaying them both right now. I usually shuffle around my displayed microbadges every week or two, so they won't both be posted together at the same time for long. I've seen some designers use three or more of their own badges for their games; I don't see it as a way of saying "this is the best game" but rather as a way to give exposure to a new title and to show people the different images available for the different characters in the game (hence the multiple images for Trollhalla, too). As you may or may not realize, game design takes a TREMENDOUS amount of work and time, often with few benefits. I think designers should be allowed the small pleasure of showing off the images others made for their games, and I think that those who take the time to make microbadges should likewise get their works displayed proudly when they first hit. They get precious little other recompense. Thanks for understanding.

Orion,

Neither my wife nor I have a problem with people expressing opinions - if we did, we wouldn't talk about somewhat-controversial topics in our podcasts. We want to foster discussion. But the reason I responded to your comments the way I did was because your comments didn't seem intended to further discussion. You essentially called what we did meaningless, and whether you think that's hurting our "Ids" or not, I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate someone saying that to you when you're speaking your mind, or displaying passion for your hobby.

Some bloggers might have deleted your comments, but I think everyone should have a voice, so I responded to you in kind. And I do appreciate you taking the time to listen to another podcast before making up your mind. At least you didn't write the whole thing off without experiencing more, and I'm glad you could find more "meat" in Episode 6. Don't keep your comments to yourself - have a voice - but remember that words and syntax carry weight and there are ordinary, hard-working, often-cool people receiving your comments on the other end.

As for Alf's microbadges - if I had spent years both designing and then trying to get a game published, I'd have that frakkin' thing as my avatar! Hell, I'd even have bumper stickers.
