Tuesday Evening Gamers - May 10th - Speicherstadt, 7 Wonders

May 10th

Missed last week as I was just flat out sick. I hate it when I'm sick enough on a game day to where I have to cancel. Work, bah! Still lingering, or it just set off allergies as my sinuses are screwed right now.

Also, it was the 20th anniversery of my getting out of the Navy. Or was it the 11th? Close enough. Timm and Kevin arrived early, as the norm, so we played a few hands of Sheepshead. Kevin got his first 'Grandma' hand and was able to snake out a no tricker on us. It was funny as Timm goes "This will be an interesting hand". So, I look at the lack of trump in my hand (as I passed) and assumed that Timm was loaded because he didn't get a chance to pick. Well, he had even less trump than I. Interesting in that we just threw cards in the middle as it did not matter.

We played perhaps 4-5 hands before Chris arrived. So, we figured we had a half hour until Scott would arrive so we broke out Some'R'Set. Chris and I versus Timm and Kevin. First hand, Timm won the bid with 13 and they got 17 points and four sandbags. Ten sandbags and you drop back 10 points. The second hand, Timm won the bid again with 16 but Chris and I set them. Chris and I got 26 points and Kevin/Timm lost 10 points (double the difference missed). Chris and I won our abbreviated game as Scott arrived just as we were finishing up the second hand.

Kevin brought over a bag of games so we selected The Speicherstadt. I think we all played it before, except for Scott. A quick teach and refresh on the rules and away we went. I liked this one the first time I played and this second time it did not disappoint. It's a brutal, FU type of game with the way bidding works. Actually, the bidding part is really the meat of the game, I think. I took too many negative points for not having firemen early but was right there at the end (even though I took last). Scott won with 17, Timm had 16, Kevin 15, Chris 14 and I had 13. I like the various ways you can get points in this one, too.

Just one week left will Kevin, Timm and myself head down to the Geekway to the West in St. Louis for four days of gaming goodness. Whoooo!

Kevin pulled another one out of the bag that he and Chris had played but the rest of us had not. 7 Wonders was our next game played. I was surprised it played up to 7, actually,. making it one of those rare games that do. The rules were taught and we started playing. Really quite simple and neat, I think. You do have to pay attention to what you are passing and to whom. It was also discussed that if you play this more than once, you almost have to switch up seating. The first game, experience was huge as Chris killed us with 61 pts. Timm had 44, Kevin 38, Scot 36 and I had 35. Timm had a ton of green and Chris had a bunch of purple. Second game was closer with Timm getting 50, Chris had 49, Scott 47, I had 45 and Kevin had 29 (he was stuck in between Scott and I who had large militaries going. I'm glad I got to play this one. Deep? eh. Lots of strategy, eh, but it's quick and fun, I think. I'd play it again.

Just realized, it's was day sponsored by "S"

I played the Speicherstadt last summer and it didn't really grab me. The bidding mechanic is neat, but money is so so tight that it seemed best to either get nothing (and the extra coin) or several things. OK for a filler game but I didn't feel a great need to seek it out again.

Am I overlooking something here?

Edit: I recalled I wrote a session report of my game: Can't I Just Buy Some Fire Insurance?

I don't think you are missing anything. It's an ebb and flow type of game. You need to be involved and buy but you have to figure out where you want to make a big move and when to hold your cash. I have only played it twice now, but I can see if played on a more regular basis, you will know what cards are probably coming up and can plan for those more. We also paid very close attention to other's money and position on the auction board and would work to make selections and either/or proposition. The game, to me, is in the auction. You might have to feign interest in one thing to get the thing you *really* want for a reasonable price.
