7 Wonders
Game Weight: 2.2
Playing Time: 80 min + 45 min
Players: Maaike, Peter, Jaap, Michiel, Sietse
Location: Peter
Date: 10-5-2011

Wondrous Wonders Waiting to Be Built

On this balmy Tuesday evening we gathered at Peter's out-of-the-way residence for a feisty game of 7 Wonders. In fact, Peter's house, hiding behind a tree as per usual, is becoming quite the place to find. Or not. Two players, anyhow, managed to struggle to find the place and showed up a little late. But no worries, the rest of the party had already settled in and were checking out the artwork and grabbing a cuppa.

During the explanation Michiel was once again suffering from his after-dinner dip, and struggled to focus on what was being said. This cost him the first game, as he didn't pick up on the fact that there were no Brown or Grey cards in Age 3. When Maaike reminded everybody (at the end of Age 2!), it was too late and Michiel could not build the third stage of his wonder.

Anyhow, there we were, at the start of this evening, excited to build our 7 wonders. Except, that was not the idea at all. Apparently it was only called that because if you played with the full complement of players - i.e. 7 - you could all build 1 wonder, and that would bring the total to.... Hmmm, indeed, 7 wonders. Well, whaddaya know - we didn't have 7 players, so we played 5 wonders twice.

I could list what empire everyone was building (Maaike was Rhodes, I was Manneken Pis, but we didn't have the rules to that (Look here Maaike!) so I changed to something else, while Sietse had the temple of Artemis), but heck, who really cares? Ultimately it doesn't really matter as it's all so balanced that I don't think it makes a difference whatsoever.

Sietse and Peter did really well in that first game and the rest of us were unsure as to who had lost. I figured I would be in the running for last spot, having lost out on the 7 points for the last stage of the running, but I lucked out:

GAME 1
1. Sietse 55
2. Peter 50
3. Michiel 44
4. Maaike 42
5. Jaap 41

It was only a little after 10 o'clock and we figured, hey, why not another game - it should be really fast to play now we know what to do. And it was, despite some AP from Peter and Maaike slowing us down with practically every card.

The highlight of this second game was Maaike's exclamation over her Baths (the card depicted above). She was certain she was supposed to have the uncensored version since she had bought the game at Essen, but it didn't look like it. Seeing the card now I am more interested in the Uncensored Original Art version, but maybe that's just sordid little me whistlemodest

In this second game I had the feeling I had done quite a bit better, but with the way the counting goes in this game it's anything but clear who's going to win. Unless, though, you're playing with Peter, and he states, quite calmly, at the end of the game - "well, I've won, I've got so many points, it's ridiculous." That was when I knew the rest of us were playing for second spot. And lo and behold, I lucked out again arrrh

GAME 2
1. Peter 68
2. Michiel 54
3. Sietse 51
4. Jaap 43
5. Maaike 29

Notable was that this second game saw much bigger differences between the players than the first. Obviously some of us understood the game a lot better than others. Maaike kept on exclaiming that she didn't understand what she had done wrong, but that she had done something wrong. Jaap figured it wasn't really his type of game. Sietse figured he'd made some mistakes in that second game. Michiel figured he'd lucked out. And Peter, well, he thought there weren't that many non-obvious choices to be made in the game - and I agree.

It was already 23:30 when Peter kicked us out in to the middle of nowhere - the location of his abode - and the middle of a thunderstorm. Luckily for us it was only lightning and the gods seemed not too unhappy with our first outing into the world of the 7 wonders (which be only 5).

Nice report. I am guessing you weren't too impressed - what was your rating, please?

My rating is going to be 7.5. That's right up there with Zooloretto, another light game that's fun to play with the right crowd (i.e. my kids) - just don't think you're getting anything deep.

The game is pretty, has a lot to it, but just isn't as deep as I'd like it to be. I pretty much agree with Peter (one of the other players, fyi) that it's lacking in the 'meaningful decisions' department.

It's not of the standard of Race for the Galaxy, for example.

Thanks for that. Possibly a little higher than I thought you might go, from the report. Always interesting. I am a bit higher with my rating here, but also less experienced with e.g. RFTG - but I find that much harder to play/teach, so I guess 7W gets the benefit of being lighter.

Ah, I see you've also only played against the AI. Hmmm, well, that is of course always less interesting I guess (with regard to RftG).

I don't think 7 Wonders is a bad game and as yet it doesn't bore me - I'd be happy to play again. But 7.5 is a pretty damning rating if you see where that lands you, looking through my owned games. If I own a game and it's at 7.5 that usually means it's on its way out. Zooloretto is a game I've had for a while and have played quite a bit, and its role at the moment is to keep my 4-year-old entertained. That pretty much says it all. I might keep it around after he outgrows it if I were to have more kids or would want to cater to kids, but really, it's just not that interesting. The same seems to go for 7 Wonders.

Race for the Galaxy, on the other hand, has potential, great potential.

I see you have a Mansions of Madness microbadge. Now that's a game that is somewhat imperfect but has the potential to grow!

I am still in 2 minds about RftG - quite like the AI, but know it would be better with real people; but then, looking at my group, I suspect the added complexity would make some unhappy. Whereas 7W seems to hit the spot.

Thanks for the Zooloretto tip - my 7 year old might like that (although he hasn't yet objected to some of my other games, including Arkham Horror and Thunderstone!)

MoM is high on my list at present. Like it a lot, but accept some of that is novelty (mind you, I am a johnny-come-lately, only started with all these new BGs in December!) Our main problem at present is that we have about 2 - 2.5 hours to play on our regular game night, and we're finding that a 5-player MoM game takes a little more. Experience might help.

Sorry to hog your thread!

Ah, no problem - that's what it's for!

A great game to play with your son would be Descent. It's Doom only better, with a lot more to it. My 9 year old son plays that the entire weekend when he comes over. He's been doing this for the last year, and English isn't even his first language! (It is mine, but that's a story for another day.)

RftG is indeed complex and if your game group is happy with 7 Wonders then why change? Enjoy! cool

EDIT: Just played 7 Wonders on BSW - not all that clear how everything works - the interface is rather clunky - but it was decent fun and exciting. I won with 50 points vs 49, 49 and 47 in a 4-player. What are the odds a game is that close?

I have looked long and hard at Descent - one for the future I think. We have Doom and Castle Ravenloft, too, and like them, but I do like the looks of Descent - I'm a 1980-started D&D fan

The little ones do like the figures. I look back at my gaming youth (Monopoly etc) and think how jealous I'd be now with the way modern games are!

Good work with the BSW thing - maybe it shows good balance? I will give it a go. I taught my nephew how to play, for real I mean, a few weeks ago, and he's been winning hands down on BSW since. But his only strategy seems to be Green Green Green! Won't get me again, that way, if I can help it!

Here are the matches I've played this evening (I'm tired and don't feel like work...):

Game 1
Michiel 50
Roodgeel 49
Aendu047 49
AthosNRW 47

Game 2
Sideboard 55
Michiel 50
Beaver5 37

Game 3
Sideboard 62
Michiel 51
Beaver5 66

Game 4
Sideboard 38
Michiel 47
Etheria 231 36

Game 5
Sideboard 59
Michiel 56
Limitless333 53

Game 6
Sideboard 40
Michiel 52
Limitless333 64
Solfare 46

----------------------

So far I can say the main thing that seems to recur is that I score around 50. Even my f2f games are around 50 (though the 44 is a little low).

It's fast, it's fun, but once again, strategy? Nope. I've played some TtA online as well, and believe me, that's an entirely different cup of tea.

My strategy? Avoid the green cards like the plague and take as many purple cards off of my opponents as possible.
