Battles of Westeros

I haven't visited the Command & Colors system since Battle Cry, not because I didn't enjoy that game, but because I never really felt much need to play any of its variants. Eleven years later, I was finally tempted by the chance to skin some direwolves for the glory of House Lannister. I'd say the system is slightly marred by the added complication here, but it's still quite playable. The flanking rules add an interesting (if chromey) wrinkle, but I'm not yet convinced the morale or initiative rules add anything especially worthwhile. Familiarity with the various special rules and abilities will certainly help get the playing time down, which will be important if this is to see much play. I'm a bit concerned that the huge impact of generals (with their limited command range) and the "stalwart" defensive formations could mean that you'll always want to keep your armies in clumps and turtle up. If the game rewards slow defensive play to any great extent, it could be an issue, since a C&C game really ought to be as short and quick moving as possible. Westeros gets an extra point for its tried and true system and because I like the theme/setting, but the jury's still out on the long term playability of this one. One last thing: Don't even play until you've glued the figures to their bases. Moving those things around otherwise is just an exercise in futility.

For Casterly Rock!

Battles of Westeros is NOT a Commands and Colours game.

FfG used the Battlelore branding on the box, but it is an entirely different set of rules, and Richard Borg, the designer of Commands and Colors was not involved in Designing Westeros.

Just wanted to get that straight as your review could well imply that "flanking, moral and initiative" were part of the entire Commands and Colors line when you were actually reviewing a different game.

Cheers
Chris

LOL! i did the same exact thing. i got BC150, love it, and gave the rest of the C&C line a pass and went right to BoW. love it too.

it will take a few games for BoW to entirely sink in. Don't worry about turtling, the scenarios don't reward such playing. You will have entire games come down to the last turn of the last round of the whole game, it's that tight.

Stalwart is a very important tactic by the way. you might also want to get the FAQ from FFG.com. It contains the Optional Rules which for the most part are welcome enhancements.

i disagree with Caroper, BoW is a C&C game in my book, just the most complicated of the two i own Richard Borg's name is on the box, it has command cards and it has colored flags for rankings. Close enough.

some of Bow's mechanics remind me of War of the Ring more than a C&C game.

Interesting. It never occurred to me that there'd be any disagreement over the label. For my purposes, the C&C label is merely shorthand for the sake of comparison, so the inclusion or exclusion of Battles of Westros in that group is of little consequence to me. That being said, there are dozens of similarities between it and Battle Cry, and to me a basic underlying rules system is clearly present in both. It can't be an "entirely different set of rules" if you can teach half the rules by saying, "It's just like Battle Cry except with the following differences."
