Dust Tactics Terrain
By Cardboard Carnage

I have been seeing a lot of nice terrain in the Dust Tactics forum lately, and it has inspired me to being a project to take my Dust Tactics game to the next level.

The cardboard terrain 'chits' (?) that come with the game are ok, but they are very plain and don't really give you a good feel for what they really are supposed to be. If you take a moment to look at the detail of the miniatures, cardboard terrain is just not cutting it.

Dust Tactics is unique in a couple of ways. First, the game takes place in the snow covered Arctic (actually, it doesn't always have to, but that is the main theme and my paint scheme goes with it). After a decade of Warhammer and 40k, can you guess how much terrain I have that has snow in it? NONE!

Also, the terrain (for the most part) needs to fit in a 3.5" square, so that is another factor. We have mostly been sticking down terrain from our Warhammer shelf, and while it does add to the game, it isn't really achieving the feel that it is supposed to.

Recently I purchased a bunch of the "Operation Frostbite" sets from AT-43 online, there is some awesome ice crystal terrain, and even though it is a bit unrealistic and futurish looking, it does seem to fit well in the Dust game with the minis and snow maps. This photo shows some of the terrain off the edges of the photo.

What really inspired me, was a recent set of photos from Major Mishap, this terrain is not only sweet, but it really sets a good tone and feel for the game. I was skeptical about making the bases square, but it really works well.

I have a new 'weekend project' for an upcoming weekend... I'll be converting some old 40k and Warhammer Fantasy terrain over to Dust Tactics!

Nice post!

I was talking to a friend about making nice scenarios with fake grass and stuff, and that theres no need in drawing the squares, just paint a small white point every 3,5" and centralize the squads on it. It could make all cleaner.

I was just thinking that the other night, we have a 4'x4' gaming table, and I'd hate to draw grids on it because it would look strange for other games like Warhammer (which I no longer play, but you get the idea).

My thought was to do the same thing, a little white dot every 3.5" and make grids that are not really grids...

Right now I am focusing on some winter specific terrain for Dust Tactics and also some fantasy terrain for Alkemy.
