Magic Realm Rebuild in 3D

A building log of my attempt to create the Magic Realm map in 3D. This will document my successes and failures (probably lots of failures) while I attempt this build. Eventually it may carry on to the other pieces of the game as well, but for now its just the map.

Hello to anyone who may stumble upon this blog.

I thought of this idea a couple years ago when I got into Magic Realm. It took me a year to actually build the game with the excellent redesign and during that time to learn the game.

Now, I find myself wishing I had done some things differenty. So, I decided to remake my map pieces in 3D using whatever miniature terrain ideas I can find and crossing my fingers.

My goal is to create the Magic Realm map in 3D using as cost effective a method I can while creating something that looks good and is playable.

Just to give you a little background. my experience in building terrain is... none. So everything I do here will be a first attempt and probable failure.

Now for the idea

Part one of the idea was getting the bases. I have previously purchased miniature bases from Gale Force 9 and was very pleased. Unfortunately, their sizes don't go up to the correct size of the map board. I tried contacting them anyway and they said they'd do a custom job for me to get me the right size. So, a week later at my door were these nice hexes (and in GF9 fashion, they sent some extras, 14 more than I ordered to be exact. Thanks GF9!)

(The left is Karim's Redesign from my current build on foamcore. The top right is the MDF hex and the bottom right is a MDF hex painted [I'm a bad painter, it was for ideas...])

The next part was to barinstorm materials and pros and cons of each.

Landscaping ideas:
Pinkfoam, plaster cloth, styrofoam, wood, and chickenwire.

Pinkfoam required more venthillation than I have while working. Wood, while nice, would be too heavy.

Final: Plaster cloth, chicken wire and newspaper

With this method I'll use chickenwire to get the main structure, newspaper for filling as well as some more 'natural' looking bumps and plaster cloth on top of it all.
I also grabbed some plaster molded rocks as you'll see in the picture below:

These may end up being too big, but we'll see.
Other Materials:

That's all for now. As we don't get the newspaper I'll need to grab some free ones from somewhere.

I'm wondering how this will work with an enchanted tile...?

Especially since the clearings and paths can change when a tile is enchanted. I suppose you could have 2 sets of tiles...Enchanted and normal.

Right now I have a couple ideas for that.

One: Have some sort of identifier for the enchanted status (no real need for it to flip). The indicator could also have the magic type(s) provided on it.

Two: Use my previously made Karim's redesign tiles and replace the tile with it when enchanted.

As of right now I have no desire to make (and therefor store and carry) 40 tiles (20 for normal 20 for enchanted). The 20 terrain tiles is enough

If anyone has any other ideas let me know. I'm open for suggestions, but please don't be offended if I don't take them

Thanks.

I've thought of this as well. Your only problem will be for those tiles where the roads change direction on the enchanted side.

Anyway, good luck on the build. It sounds like a cool idea.

You might want to check out this link from a while back. It has photos from someone's 3D board from 1992.

I actually have seen that. It's part of what gave me the idea and motivation to try this.

Thanks though!

I'd make the same tile again.. and sprinkle it with 'gold glitter'.

It's a shame you can't almost make a coloured plastic molding that just slots over the top. Maybe a purple one.
