We played Rattus already last week, but I didn't have my camera. Now I had both camera and Rattus on table. Here's the results:

Some of these photos include bits of Rattus: Pied Piper. Rattus is pretty cool for a 30-minute game with some confrontation and hosage.

These photos are simple available light stuff, shot with the 18-55mm kit lens. Curious enough, all four fall between 34 and 41 mm focal length. Sounds like a 35mm prime might make a good board game lens, then

I considered rotating the whole board photo so it'd be straighter, but eventually I decided the wider view (and the beer) was better than the straighter view (it would've cut the visible area a lot).

Here's a bonus photo... I went to feed the mallards at the local pond with the kids, and wanted to take some photos. Well, it turns out mallards and goldeneyes don't look like much when they are photographed swimming in the water. The gulls, in the other hand, were much more photogenic:

Thanks! The bar we're playing in has these huge windows near the tables, so there's plenty of light, except in winter (ie. September to April or so ).

The gull shot... well, I learnt a lesson about bird photography yesterday. Take lots of photos! Eventually you'll get a shot of something interesting happening and possibly the focus is where it should be. I've got a bunch of gull photos with totally off focus, and lots of nicely focused photos of swimming mallards that are very boring. Then, one photo like this, and another that's almost there.

Very nice photo, Mikko. Rattus is on my to-buy list, but at very low priority. Now that I've seen your photos, oh boy, it looks really nice!

The black-headed gull image is very nice too. I saw the image and wondered where you lived to see such a bird. "Ah, Finland! No wonder I've never observed such a bird!" I'll gladly look at any more bird images you may have.

Heh, can't come up with many birds that are more common than black-headed gulls (or "laughing gulls", as they are called here). However, when I look at gull photos online and there are all these photos of black-headed gulls in their winter plumage, I don't recognise the birds at all. I never see them in winter... Maybe I'll start a series of "birds of Finland", then

The Rattus board looks wicked cool. The character tiles... not so. They are fairly large, so the art has space to shine, but I'm not very keen on the style. It's a good thing this isn't another Michael Menzel game (heh, do you remember the time when there was no Michael Menzel and it was Franz Vohwinkel, whose art was all over the German board game world? I wonder when Menzel will move on and get replaced by someone else.), but the card are varies from "meh" to "decent" in my opinion.

Here are some more bird photos for you:

I've got the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro ordered, that should help getting bird photos as well, I'll get some more reach. A 50mm lens is somewhat restricted... But I can get as many photos of mallards and gulls as I want, with any setup, all it takes is some bread

GORGEOUS pictures of Rattus (and nature) Mikko! Sometimes I feel like I take a good picture of a game, and then I see this stuff!

And HEH -- Rattus is awesome, I think you in particular would enjoy it.
