Predictions before the Spiel des Jahres nominations are out

As far as I understand Spiel des Jahres nominations are out tomorrow.
I have no idea about the Kinderspiel des Jahres list but have some predictions about the Spiel des Jahres and the Kennerspiel des Jahres (new category - Game of the year for experts).

According to an interview the jury said previous nominees Puerto Rico, Vikings, Stone Age or Torres would have been better fits for the new award than for the Spiel des Jahres. As many of these are games for 10+ year-olds I do predict that many geeks will be upset seeing the games nominated for the complex game award are still not the most complex ones, not the ones they like to play.
Now I'm pretty sure a geek favorite like Vinhos will not be nominated for the award; quite probably it won't even be recommended. The Spiel des Jahres jury prefers games that are fun and don't have unnecessary complexity. Now we can be sure simpler, easier games are going to dominate the Spiel des Jahres list and you are going to find more complex, but still family-friendly and enjoyable games in the "complex games" category (and that's something I expected when they announced they are going to have a separate category for these awards - they awarded Caylus, Agricola and World Without an End before).

So what do I think gets nominated?
Complex award: (more like "an award for those who are not totally new to the hobby") :
7 Wonders (probable winner) - no, the game is not that complex; it's rather light but it's not less complex than Stone Age or Vikings either - and it can be hard to learn for those who are totally beginners (as you have to learn many icons and cards and can't ask anyone during your first play). I predict hardcore gamers getting upset because of this nomination/win.

I'm really not sure about the rest. What is going to be the upper limit in complexity?
I would not be surprised to see some of the following here:
Grand Cru - I know it's a simple game (well, with a weight rating right now at a surprising 3.2) but it's also the game that won its designer a special Spiel des Jahres scholarship some years ago.
Navegador - which is tense, fun and fine
Die Burgen von Burgund - which is great and also more fun than the usual - really good - Stefan Feld games
Firenze - which is just very enjoyable
Industry (? haven't played it yet)

(only) recommendation:
Troyes - might make it to the nomination list but I'm really not sure. I'm also not sure it got a German release.
Olympus - did it get a German release?
Glen More - or was it released earlier?
Tikal II - why not? It's fine; it's just not Tikal.

no Pantheon - doesn't seem likely
no Vinhos - a 'too complex game for its own good' with a beginner designer's flaws.

(simple) Game of the year (Spiel des Jahres) award:
not in any order, I have no idea which one of these has a real chance to win:
Asara - If 7 wonders stays in the complex category then it might win the award.
Forbidden Island - The jury likes Matt Leacock, liked Pandemic and this family-friendly, simpler version of Pandemic might be just what they were looking for. Also the German edition is said to be better than the English one.
Airlines Europe - Union Pacific was nominated more than 10 years ago. This is a simpler, probably better version (that is different enough), also having some small ideas taken from Moon's SdJ-winning Ticket to Ride and feeling like SdJ-winning Alhambra (which was based on Stimmt So! which was actually pretty much a simple card game of stock-holding copying the original Airlines). Still it's a bit more complex than either so it might end up in the complex category, I don't know.
Mondo - which I haven't played yet but seems to be another Michael Schacht family winner.
Safranito - is simple, is different, also has a dexterity element to it and it got good (though not great) reviews.

recommendation:
Skull & Roses - I believe this one got a German release. If it did, it might even be nominated.
Uluru- might get a nomination
Cargo Noir - is okay and nice for families
K2 - is simple enough to stay here; a themed race game - fine
Pergamon - is not bad but not that special either; I'm not sure if it gets recommended here or in the other category
Snapshot - seems fine for what it is. Is it?
Funfair - is a really nice and really fun game compilation for children and families.
BITS - FITS was nominated; this one might get recommended.
possibly The Great Fire of London 1666 - not bad game with too long set-up; are there german rules added?
possibly Isla Dorada - not as good as it should be, its "Elfenroads meets Ulysses" idea is rather nice and can be fun with the right circumstances.
possibly Artus - I don't know which category and in case of this one the jury's personal tastes might differ (too) much.

And of course there will be some surprise names, names that I have probably never even heard of in the lists. There are surprises each year.

Well as my copy of Troyes has rules in English, French and German so I think it must be available in Germany. I think it will win the complex game award.

Two comments. I don't see 7 Wonders as complex enough be in the "complex" category. In my mind it's a no brainer for Spiel Des Jahres with a game like Navegador taking the complex category.

Second, If Grand Cru is even nominated it will shock me. What a horrific game with a pasted on theme.

John: I can imagine Troyes getting nominated for the complex award. But while it's not a bad game I would be rather sad to see it win.

Jonathan: until now I just could not decide if 7 Wonders is going to be Spiel des Jahres or in the "for experts" category because of the reasons above: while it's really simple for experts, the many different kinds of cards can be overwhelming for beginners. But now that I read the interview where they also mentioned Stone Age and Vikings as games that would have been in the complex category if it existed back then... I'd say I see it a bit more probable that 7 Wonders is going to be in the "for experts" category.

Grand Cru - while the game is far from my favorite I beg to differ. I wouldn't say the theme is pasted on (or at least the mechanism serves the theme rather well) and it has some nice ideas. I'm not sure it gets nominated (I'm not sure of anything of course) but then I still think it gets recommended.

I'm guessing 7 Wonders for the Spiel Des Jahres and Troyes for "complex" award.

7 Wonders is a slam dunk for the SdJ this year. I don't think any other game is really even in close contention.

It's always hard to judge what the SdJ jury will pick for the SdJ nominations and the same goes for the complex games category now as well but these would be my personal picks based on which games have had the biggest impact in the past year...

My 5 SdJ nominees:

7 Wonders (landslide winner)
Forbidden Island
Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game
Fresco
Space Hulk: Death Angel - The Card Game

Now there is no way the jury will nominate the D&D game or the Space Hulk game but I think they are certainly deserving of nominations.

For the complex games category these would be my nominees... again based on the games that have made the biggest impact in the past year:

My 5 "complex games" nominees:

Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game
Dominant Species
Runewars
Merchants & Marauders
Troyes

Darren,

From the interview at www.opinionatedgamers.com:
Quote:
Bernhard Löhlein: The new main prize should help guide those who have been playing games for a longer time and have experience with learning new games. That doesn’t mean the absolute experts, but rather those who don’t feel that the Spiel des Jahres is enough any more.

This way I don't think the first 4 games you listed for complex games will be nominated (I'm not even sure these will be recommended) as these are really for experts. As I stated above, Troyes can have a chance to be nominated.
As for your 5 SdJ nominees: Space Hulk and D&D can't be nominated; Fresco was nominated last year and the two games that I do think have a chance are 7W and Forbidden Island. I'm still not sure which category 7 Wonders is going to fit in.

Yes... I certainly didn't mean to imply those would be the actual jury choices. Far from it... they will probably choose very few of those as their nominees. Those are just the games that I think are most deserving of nominations based on their impact on gaming over the past year... of course everyone will see it differently and have their own views.

Thanks for pointing out that Fresco was nominated last year... I'll replace that one with Innovation then instead if Fresco is not eligible... not that Innovation is likely to be nominated either.

I have to say that the SdJ jury selection process is odd... often selecting remakes of games from years ago and selecting some obscure games that often fade from memory not long after being selected... again that's what you'll get when you have a small group of possibly "eccentric" jurors selecting the games instead of taking a more broad based approach such as looking at the reviews and ratings here on BGG.

Of course the awards aren't really catering towards the community here on BGG who are already "in" the hobby... they are meant as a driver of interest and publicity for the boardgaming industry in general and the SdJ serves that function well. Anything that exposes more people to gaming and spreads the word about the hobby is a benefit to us all here.

The actual games that receive the awards is really a moot point... as long as the publicity train keeps rolling along and the awareness that good games keep getting produced each year is made clear to the purchasing public.

Grand Cru forever! One of the best business games. It's simple to learn and explain, so it's a pity if it isn't nominted. Other really "horrific" games such as Vinhos must be avoided.

When I first got into the hobby a few years ago, my favorite games to pick up first were the sdj winners. Thurn and Taxis, TTR, Catan, Niagara,Carc, El Grande, Zooloretto.... these "style" of games were perfect for wide appeal, but had a uniqueness to them and depth. Even the nominees (Arkadia, Thebes, Finca), etc. were good bets and I'm glad to have them in my collection.

But something happened around 2009 and I can't relate to the noms/winners anymore. First of all, Dominion, with a D&Dish-themed card game. Then the next year that had two party games nominated, then this year with a Wal-mart perennial (Quirkle) and a Pandemic re-hash (FI)... I don't know, just can't get into sdj anymore.

D.C. - I totally hear where your coming from. I actually just looked at your game collection, and guessing I might have very similiar taste in games to you. However, not sure if you have tried 7 Wonders, but I just picked it up, and it is AMAZING!

Yes, I do want to try 7 wonders. Also I just played FI recently and thought it was very clever actually, and I'm not really a fan of pandemic. So I guess I should give qwirkle a go after all
