Welcome to our weekly recap of the games we played this week. Despite a lot of other activities, we still managed a good amount of playing this week.

The week started off with some rare Monday night gaming. My wife was away attending a meeting so it was just the kids and me. They finished their homework early, so we had time for some gaming. They had learned Monopoly over the weekend but that is not a good game choice for a school night. So I did the next best thing and brought out Monopoly Express. We had time for three games. My son won two games while I won one time. You can read a more detailed report about the games here: 3 game series with the kids.

Tuesday night saw one of my favorite games make it to the table for the first time in a while.

My daughter was watching television and didn't want to play, so it was a three player game involving me, Melissa, and our son. The highlight of the game was when my son stage whispered to Melissa, "Mom, you've got to block Dad." Melissa, of course, didn't block Dad and drew some cards. On my turn, I was able to use an Amphora with a lucky draw to connect two shrines and win the game. My son reiterated to Melissa that he warned her but she didn't listen to him. Winner: Larry

There was no more gaming until Friday. Melissa took my daughter to her dance recital rehearsal so it was just my son and me. I used the opportunity to teach him how to play Lost Cities. He learned the game quickly but didn't grasp the strategy right away and was guilty of a rookie mistake of starting too many expeditions. He scored a solid 30 points in one but his other 4 (yes he started an expedition in every color) netted him a negative 12 for a total score of 18. I only scored 28 in my best expedition but added another 8 in two more for a total score of 36. We were then interrupted by two hungry ladies so we didn't play but one round. Winner: Larry.

After dinner, the whole family sat down for one of our favorite games, Liar's Dice.

Melissa was eliminated early, losing 4 of her dice in one turn. My son lasted a bit longer but finished third. It was down to a duel between me and my daughter and I got the best of her this time. Winner: Larry

Next up was another new game for the kids and one that I had not played in years: Knights of Charlemagne. (I own the Tabula Rasa version)

With 4 players, you play with partners so my daughter and I challenged Melissa and my son. The first game was close but they pulled out a 24-21 victory. Winner: Melissa and Son. We got our revenge in the second game and pulled out a 26-19 point victory. Winners: Larry and Daughter.

Saturday saw another new game for the kids and won that I hadn't played since 2004: Return of the Heroes.

Prior to play, I downloaded the rules rewrite from this site. It is a tremendous improvement over the original mess that shipped with the game. Melissa was busy getting ready for a business trip so it was going to be another 3 player game. I explained enough of the game to the kids to get started and added rules as we went along. The game is fairly easy to understand and the kids had a blast playing it. My son made the first run at the nameless one but was too damaged by the Guards to continue and had to turn back. This allowed me to slide in and defeat the Nameless One for the victory. Winner: Larry

Sunday the kids wanted a rematch. We moved up from the introductory game to the standard one. Despite my strong advice for the kids to complete their quest and attack the Nameless One, both of them kept screwing around with minor tasks. Not wanting the game to drag out forever, I made a charge to the final victory and defeated the Shadow for the win. After the game both children admitted that they understood the need to stay focused on the main goal. I'm hopeful that next time it will be more competitive. Winner: Larry

That concludes our wrap-up and see you again next week.

I do have too many. I should probably get rid of about half my collection, but it is hard for me to do so.

I hope my posts do get you to play more with your family, but it is hard to play boardgames and swim at the same time.
